Book excerpt: I met an alien. He is mind-scorchingly hot. I actually think I am falling for him. One problem...he is my alien slave master and I am trying to escape.CarissaI've never known Earth. Or freedom. Both were taken from me when I was too young to remember. But I know exactly what the latest alien scumbags to buy me have in mind, the moment I hear the word "fertile."Desperation's the mother of invention, and one easily seduced guard later, I'm escaping to finally live on my own terms. To find my mom, my one connection to a planet I'll probably never see. The only person who's ever given a damn about me. It's all that keeps me going. The source of every last drop of energy I eke out of this miserable existence, when I have so many reasons to just give up and fade away.Like my crap luck. Reason infinity why I should just pop out the airlock of my stolen ship and say "Sayonara universe, PS you suck."My first escape attempt that's ever resulted in an actual escape, and I run smack into one of the most infamous dragon shapeshifters in the galaxy. But I haven't come this far just to give up. I escaped once, I can do it again. And no smug, self-impressed alien edgelord is going to stop me. Even if he is so mind scorchingly hot it makes my brain bleed to think of choosing to deprive myself of the eye candy. The universe had years to try and keep me down. You think one little dragon's gonna do any better?Fine. One really big dragon. Whatever. Bring it.TarionWe dragons are a simple people, with simple philosophies. Like why ask for something you can simply take? The rest of the galaxy tends to be too busy fleeing from us in terror to answer that, so I assume they agree.Until Carissa Maeberry. The most baffling creature in existence, she doesn't seem to get how this works. I have claws. Fire. A ruthless crew. She has an admittedly tragic backstory and a slave collar. The scales aren't exactly balanced. And yet to see her defiance, you'd think she held all the cards. It's absurd and breath-taking all at once. Which is why when others try and take my rarest of treasures from me, I must protest. Vigorously.I did mention the claws and fire and ruthless crew, did I not? This 50,000 word sci-fi romance has all the action and adventure you could ask for, both in battle and in bed. Please be eighteen and up when reading how this beauty tames her savage beast...or is it the other way around?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As late as 1995, the anticipated widespread population of primeval galaxies remained at large, lurking undetected at unknown redshifts, with undiscovered properties. We present results from our efforts to detect and characterize primeval galaxies by their signature high-redshift Lyman-alpha emission lines utilizing two observational techniques: serendipitous slit spectroscopy and narrowband imaging. By pushing these techniques to their utmost limits, we probe the Lyman-alpha-emitting galaxy population out to redshifts as high as z = 6.5. Galaxies at this epoch reside in a universe which is just 800 million years old, a mere 6% of its current age. As such, this work provides one account of the manner by which observational cosmology has recently shifted from merely marveling at the incredible lookback times implied by the first few high-redshift detections, to the routine assembly of high-redshift datasets designed to address specific astrophysical issues.

Book excerpt: As our closest stellar companion and composed of two Sun-like stars and a third small dwarf star, Alpha Centauri is an ideal testing ground of astrophysical models and has played a central role in the history and development of modern astronomy—from the first guesses at stellar distances to understanding how our own star, the Sun, might have evolved. It is also the host of the nearest known exoplanet, an ultra-hot, Earth-like planet recently discovered. Just 4.4 light years away Alpha Centauri is also the most obvious target for humanity’s first directed interstellar space probe. Such a mission could reveal the small-scale structure of a new planetary system and also represent the first step in what must surely be humanity’s greatest future adventure—exploration of the Milky Way Galaxy itself. For all of its closeness, α Centauri continues to tantalize astronomers with many unresolved mysteries, such as how did it form, how many planets does it contain and where are they, and how might we view its extensive panorama directly? In this book we move from the study of individual stars to the study of our Solar System and our nearby galactic neighborhood. On the way we will review the rapidly developing fields of exoplanet formation and detection.

Book excerpt: Humankind has grappled for millennia with the fundamental questions of the origin and end of the universe--it was a focus of ancient religions and myths and of the inquiries of Aristotle, Galileo, Copernicus, Kepler, and Newton. Today we are at the brink of discoveries that should soon reveal the deepest secrets of the universe. Alpha and Omega is a dispatch from the front lines of the cosmological revolution that is being waged at observatories and laboratories around the world-in Europe, in America, and even in Antarctica--where scientists are actually peering into both the cradle of the universe and its grave. Scientists--including galaxy hunters and microwave eavesdroppers, gravity theorists and atom smashers, all of whom are on the trail of dark matter, dark energy, and the growing inhabitants of the particle zoo-now know how the universe will end and are on the brink of understanding its beginning. Their findings will be among the greatest triumphs of science, even towering above the deciphering of the human genome. This is the book you need to help understand the frequent front-page headlines heralding dramatic cosmological discoveries. It makes cutting-edge science both crystal clear and wonderfully exciting.

These Manufactured Humanoid Units, or MHUs, are born into an oppressed class of people, abused, exploited, and repressed for the betterment of humanity. A large ensemble cast leads this saga of action, drama, intrigue, politics, scientific enterprise, a touch of romance, and a big mystery acting out behind the scenes. Agent Powder is just following orders. That's what she tells herself anyway, as she is used by the powers that be as an instrument to maintain the status quo. She hunts down rogue MHUs fleeing from their oppressive life, along with those who aid and abet them. Meanwhile, in the rest of the Republic, politicians scheme, activists rally, tech barons plot, and scientists continue to press technology ever forward by any means necessary.

Book excerpt: Natural radiation levels in the biosphere on Earth vary from 6 microrem/hr over the ocean to values 300 times larger in certain geologic territories. The upper end of this scale overlaps the lowest galactic radiation levels in space. Except for acute radiation exposure in the radiation belt or from solar protons, the radiation environment in space would not seem to constitute a basic obstacle to man's survival in space. Since proton storm shelters on the Moon or planets could be built with indigenous rock, only galactic exposure has to be dealt with in long-term missions. This exposure can be expected to result in inconspicuous chronic damage, such as life shortening which can be estimated to amount to 25 per cent of the time spent in space. As far as acute effects from trapped or solar particles are concerned, these comparatively soft radiations will mainly affect the skin, possibly producing erythema or more severe skin damage, with bone marrow and intestines remaining essentially intact. Operationally, this problem would require the main attention to be focused on in-fight medical care. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hydrogen Lyman-alpha line is of utmost importance to many fields of astrophysics. This UV line being conveniently redshifted with distance to the visible and even near infrared wavelength ranges, it is observable from the ground, and provides the main observational window on the formation and evolution of high redshift galaxies. Absorbing systems that would otherwise go unnoticed are revealed through the Lyman-alpha forest, Lyman-limit, and damped Lyman-alpha systems, tracing the distribution of baryonic matter on large scales, and its chemical enrichment. We are living an exciting epoch with the advent of new instruments and facilities, on board of satellites and on the ground. Wide field and very sensitive integral field spectrographs are becoming available on the ground, such as MUSE at the ESO VLT. The giant E-ELT and TMT telescopes will foster a quantum leap in sensitivity and both spatial and spectroscopic resolution, to the point of being able, perhaps, to measure directly the acceleration of the Hubble flow. In space, the JWST will open new possibilities to study the Lyman-alpha emission of primordial galaxies in the near infrared. As long as the Hubble Space Telescope will remain available, the UV-restframe properties of nearby galaxies will be accessible to our knowledge. Therefore, this Saas-Fee course appears very timely and should meet the interest of many young researchers.
