Book excerpt: Forget the 10,000 hour rule— what if it’s possible to learn the basics of any new skill in 20 hours or less? Take a moment to consider how many things you want to learn to do. What’s on your list? What’s holding you back from getting started? Are you worried about the time and effort it takes to acquire new skills—time you don’t have and effort you can’t spare? Research suggests it takes 10,000 hours to develop a new skill. In this nonstop world when will you ever find that much time and energy? To make matters worse, the early hours of practicing something new are always the most frustrating. That’s why it’s difficult to learn how to speak a new language, play an instrument, hit a golf ball, or shoot great photos. It’s so much easier to watch TV or surf the web . . . In The First 20 Hours, Josh Kaufman offers a systematic approach to rapid skill acquisition— how to learn any new skill as quickly as possible. His method shows you how to deconstruct complex skills, maximize productive practice, and remove common learning barriers. By completing just 20 hours of focused, deliberate practice you’ll go from knowing absolutely nothing to performing noticeably well. Kaufman personally field-tested the methods in this book. You’ll have a front row seat as he develops a personal yoga practice, writes his own web-based computer programs, teaches himself to touch type on a nonstandard keyboard, explores the oldest and most complex board game in history, picks up the ukulele, and learns how to windsurf. Here are a few of the simple techniques he teaches: Define your target performance level: Figure out what your desired level of skill looks like, what you’re trying to achieve, and what you’ll be able to do when you’re done. The more specific, the better. Deconstruct the skill: Most of the things we think of as skills are actually bundles of smaller subskills. If you break down the subcomponents, it’s easier to figure out which ones are most important and practice those first. Eliminate barriers to practice: Removing common distractions and unnecessary effort makes it much easier to sit down and focus on deliberate practice. Create fast feedback loops: Getting accurate, real-time information about how well you’re performing during practice makes it much easier to improve. Whether you want to paint a portrait, launch a start-up, fly an airplane, or juggle flaming chainsaws, The First 20 Hours will help you pick up the basics of any skill in record time . . . and have more fun along the way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuts and Bolts Spirituality explores the two belief systems that we hold about life. Theory number one of the universe says that we are separate from each other, separate from God, and is fear-based. Theory number two of the universe says that we are one with all things, one with God and is love-based. We observe that most of the people in the world subscribe to the theory number one about the universe. To get real clarity on the beliefs that we hold about life and our relationship with the source of life, God, Nuts and Bolts Spirituality explores the two questions that must be addressed and answered. First, "Why was the universe created in the first place?" Secondly, "What is our purpose in that creation?" By examining these questions we can understand life from a larger, clearer perspective. From this understanding the reader can view their own life with more clarity and awareness. This larger, clearer perspective allows the "sleepwalkers" of the world to wake up, become aware, and truly create the life of their intentions and desires.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with a key concept concerning the future: change. It is omnipresent and yet is often only perceived in retrospect. The book’s editor and founder of Psychological Future Management argues that we are currently experiencing the beginning of the most radical and profound change in human history. This is the right moment to analyze people’s ability to change more precisely. In this first, representative study, Germany was chosen as an example. The results serve as a basis for further psychological, sociological and prospective considerations. The Germans obviously have great resilience and problem-solving competence. At the same time, however, they are one-sidedly fixated on maintaining the economic status quo and fear negative changes in the future. Their social milieus are permeated by contradictions. The wealthy, in particular, are tied to security concerns and are therefore unwilling to experiment and take risks, two qualities without which a future in times of exponential change can hardly be managed. What could other countries and societies learn from these descriptions of the current state of one of the world’s leading countries? The entire subject revolves around this question. The psychological effects of digitization and artificial intelligence also play a role, as they put our neuronal and emotional habits under enormous pressure. How can we improve our future competence and learn to adapt new knowledge more quickly and continuously? Against this background, the phenomenon of change will be examined and discussed from various national and international perspectives.

Book excerpt: While traditional finance focuses on the tools used to optimize return and minimize risk, this book explains how psychology can affect our decisions more than financial theory. Covering the ways investors actually behave, this is the first book of its kind to delve into the ways biases influence investment behavior, and how overcoming these biases can increase financial success. Now in its sixth edition, this classic text features: An easy-to-understand structure, illustrating psychological biases as everyday behavior; analyzing their effect on investment decisions; and concluding with academic studies that exhibit real-life investors making choices that hurt their wealth. A new chapter on the biology of investment, exploring the latest research on genetics, neuroscience, and how hormones, aging, and nature versus nurture inform our investment behavior. An additional strategy for controlling biases, helping readers understand the psychology that motivates markets and how to address it. Experiential examples, chapter summaries, and end-of-chapter discussion questions to help readers test their practical understanding. Fully updated with the latest research in the field, The Psychology of Investing will prove fascinating and educational for advanced students in investment, portfolio management, and behavioral finance classes as well as investors and financial planners.

Book excerpt: Communication research is evolving and changing in a world of online journals, open-access, and new ways of obtaining data and conducting experiments via the Internet. Although there are generic encyclopedias describing basic social science research methodologies in general, until now there has been no comprehensive A-to-Z reference work exploring methods specific to communication and media studies. Our entries, authored by key figures in the field, focus on special considerations when applied specifically to communication research, accompanied by engaging examples from the literature of communication, journalism, and media studies. Entries cover every step of the research process, from the creative development of research topics and questions to literature reviews, selection of best methods (whether quantitative, qualitative, or mixed) for analyzing research results and publishing research findings, whether in traditional media or via new media outlets. In addition to expected entries covering the basics of theories and methods traditionally used in communication research, other entries discuss important trends influencing the future of that research, including contemporary practical issues students will face in communication professions, the influences of globalization on research, use of new recording technologies in fieldwork, and the challenges and opportunities related to studying online multi-media environments. Email, texting, cellphone video, and blogging are shown not only as topics of research but also as means of collecting and analyzing data. Still other entries delve into considerations of accountability, copyright, confidentiality, data ownership and security, privacy, and other aspects of conducting an ethical research program. Features: 652 signed entries are contained in an authoritative work spanning four volumes available in choice of electronic or print formats. Although organized A-to-Z, front matter includes a Reader’s Guide grouping entries thematically to help students interested in a specific aspect of communication research to more easily locate directly related entries. Back matter includes a Chronology of the development of the field of communication research; a Resource Guide to classic books, journals, and associations; a Glossary introducing the terminology of the field; and a detailed Index. Entries conclude with References/Further Readings and Cross-References to related entries to guide students further in their research journeys. The Index, Reader’s Guide themes, and Cross-References combine to provide robust search-and-browse in the e-version.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I grew up in a family system where there were a lot of abusive family members. The ones who were not abusive didn't seem to be able to remove themselves or the children from the harmful behavior in our lives. As a child I was extremely nervous and felt a lot of shame. I witnessed a lot of horrible things and was extremely abused myself. I saw how alcoholism enabled certain family members to either act very inappropriately when under the influence or become extremely violent. I saw how alcohol was used to medicate other family members. Some of my family members died rather young I feel due a very stressful life. I began to notice my siblings and my cousins participate in destructive relationships and/or abuse substances. My relationships with them were not healthy ones. I tried for years to find ways to improve my relationships with them but nothing ever worked no matter how hard I tried. This book is about my experiences with family and other unhealthy relationships in my life. How it all affected me from childhood and into adulthood. The steps I had to take to improve my life. I now believe I can have the love and respect I want from others in my life as long as I love and care for myself. I hope my story will help others who have had similar experiences. I have no desire to drink alcohol anymore or to associate with people who abuse it, are abusive, controlling and who cannot be accountable for their behavior. We all deserve to heal and have good relationships in our lives.

Book excerpt: This book aims to deepen public understanding of the community college and to challenge our longstanding reliance on a deficit model for defining this important, powerful, and transformative institution. Featuring a unique combination of data and research, Sullivan seeks to help redefine, update, and reshape public perception about community colleges. This book gives serious attention to student voices, and includes narratives written by community college students about their experiences attending college at an open admissions institution. Sullivan examines the history of the modern community college and the economic model that is driving much of the current discussion in higher education today. Sullivan argues that the community college has done much to promote social justice and economic equality in America since the founding of the modern community college in 1947 by the Truman Commission.

Even better, understanding the Bible does not require a degree in theology, but simply an open heart and mind. Uplifting and deeply moving, Walking with God Is a Divine Journey shares ways to develop a closer relationship with God through our life's experiences. Author Lisa Olivares Young explains how, regardless of how your life began or how many mistakes you've made, the promises of God are deeply rooted within us to seek the life He so graciously desires for us. Young uses personal anecdotes and biblical stories to illustrate how God has worked in her life. She also explores the doubts, fears, and perplexities she has endured in various life situations, illustrating how she found comfort and guidance in the Bible and through prayer. Each chapter touches upon a subject often encountered in our walk with God, including - learning from your past; - overcoming life's challenges; - discovering your purpose; - taking the road less traveled. Part memoir and part Bible study, Walking with God Is a Divine Journey will help you develop your faith, understand God's love and guidance, and listen to His correction, all by reading and applying His word.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes to the current knowledge and research on conflict and cross-cultural dialogue, emphasizing how respect, tolerance and dialogue may be quite effective tools for bridging the diverse cultures and, consequently, for solving many of the conflicts of today’s world, characterized by a dynamic interchange of populations with very diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. For this purpose, we rely on reputed scholars from ten different countries, and from different cultures and fields of expertise, which allows for diverse contributions from a valuable interdisciplinary perspective. The first section of the book deals with the correlation between cultural differences and conflict, while also showing how such conflicts can be prevented and, should they arise, managed and solved. The second section addresses a different, more specific issue: how cultural expression means and tools for cultural communication may lead to conflict whereas they may help to avoid it as well. Finally, the third section analyzes how legal and justice systems deal with cross-cultural conflicts as well as with situations which may lead to cross-cultural conflicts, thus assessing to which extent such systems contribute to avoid and/or solve such kind of conflicts.
