Book excerpt: Design has an increasingly high profile - figures like Philippe Starck are as venerated and well known as more traditional artists. Book excerpt: The planning, production and cultural development of a company that has been one of the keystones of Italian design for almost sixty years. Writing the history of Tecno, a company founded in 1953 by the Borsani brothers, does not mean just investigating the evolution of a significant player in the industrial production of furniture, but also tracing out a fundamental chapter in interior design at a global level. Many Tecno projects have been designed by some of the most prominent international architects and designers, including Vico Magistretti, Roberto Mango, Robin Day, Gio Ponti, Mario Bellini, Norman Foster, Ricardo Bofill, Jean-Michelle Wilmotte, Emilio Ambasz, Giorgetto Giugiaro, Gae Aulenti, and Piero Lissoni. Not to mention Tecno has always had a strong bond with the world of art, which has found material form in a specific collection of furnishings designed by noted artists like Man Ray, Bruno Munari, François and Frédéric Morellet, and Luigi Veronesi. Today many Tecno products are exhibited in leading museums of the world: at MoMA, New York and San Francisco, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Georges Pompidou Centre, Paris, the Neue Sammlung, Munich, the Museum of Decorative Arts, Montreal and the Triennale in Milan.

Book Synopsis The Cinema of Urban Crisis by : Lawrence Webb
Download or read book The Cinema of Urban Crisis written by Lawrence Webb and published by Cities and Cultures. This book was released on 2014 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cinema of Urban Crisis explores the relationships between cinema and urban crises in the United States and Europe in the 1970s. Discussing films by Robert Altman, Stanley Kubrick, and Jean-Luc Godard, among others, Lawrence Webb reflects on processes of globalization and urban change that were beginning to transform cities like New York, London, and Berlin. Throughout, the 1970s are conceptualized as a historically distinctive period of crisis in capitalism, which reorganized urban landscapes and produced cultural innovation, technological change, and new configurations of power and resistance. Addressing themes of interest for film, cultural, and urban studies, this book is a compelling take on cinema from both sides of the Atlantic.

Book Synopsis History of Modern Architecture by : Leonardo Benevolo
Download or read book History of Modern Architecture written by Leonardo Benevolo and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1977 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A serious and original study of the beginnings and development of modernism in which the pictorial aspects are designed to aid in the communication of the author's closely reasoned formulations. Let it be said at once that the format of this work is richly handsome: it is a two-volume boxed set comprising 844 pages and well over 1,000 high-quality illustrations, and it reflects throughout its publisher's conviction that good design is an essential, not superficial, part of bookmaking. Beyond that, it should be emphasized that this work is not another facile cultural tour of modern architecture. It is a serious and original study of the beginnings and development of modernism in which the pictorial aspects are designed to aid in the communication of the author's closely reasoned formulations, rather than to gloss over a lack of substantive content. The book is a translation of the third Italian edition, published in 1966. Benevolo, who is on the faculty of architecture in Venice, has earned an international reputation as a historian of architecture and town planning, and his publications embrace the span of time from the Renaissance to the foreseeable future. One such publication, The Origins of Modern Town Planning (The MIT Press, 1967), may be read as a prelude to the present work as well as an independent contribution. Perhaps more than any other architectural historian in our time, Benevolo has made a determined effort to place developments in design and planning in their proper social and political settings. Indeed, the author argues that the development of the modern movement in architecture was determined, not by aesthetic formalisms, but largely by the social changes that have occurred since about 1760: "After the middle of the eighteenth century, without the continuity of formal activity being in any way broken, indeed while architectural language seems to be acquiring a particular coherence, the relations between architect and society began to change radically.... New material and spiritual needs, new ideas and modes of procedure arise both within and beyond the traditional limits, and finally they run together to form a new architectural synthesis that is completely different from the old one. In this way it is possible to explain the birth of modern architecture, which otherwise would seem completely incomprehensible...." This second volume is concerned with the modern movement proper, from 1914 to 1966. The author emphasizes the unity of the movement, rejecting the usual treatment that allots to the individual architects separate and unconnected biographical accounts.Benevolo remarks at one point, "When one talks about modern architecture one must bear in mind the fact that it implies not only a new range of forms, but also a new way of thinking, whose consequences have not yet all been calculated." His main concern is to provide a more exact calculation of those consequences.
Download or read book Nutrigenomics written by Gerald Rimbach and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-05-23 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nutritional genomics, also referred to as nutrigenomics, is considered one of the next frontiers in the post-genomic era. This book features the latest research on the role of oxidants and dietary antioxidants in the modulation of gene expression, aging, immune function, neuroprotection, and vascular heath. It covers the relationship between oxidants, antioxidants, and gene expression, as well as new molecular techniques for the study of redox-regulated signal transduction. It summarizes the molecular mechanisms of phytochemicals and trace elements, emphasizes the impact of variations in the human genotype on individual responses to nutrients, and offers a summary of the effect of lipid and water soluble antioxidants and fatty acids on gene expression in cultured cells, laboratory animals, and humans.
