Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the second half of the eighteenth century a new type of Passion oratorio with roots in the Empfindsamerkeit literary movement gained popularity in Germany. In this style, dramatic narrative was replaced with a lyric and contemplative text. Rather than unfolding the events of the biblical drama, the librettist assumed the listeners familiarity with the story and concentrated instead on the expression of emotions evoked by the narrative. Details of this style are described in an essay published in Johann Georg Sulzers Allgemeine Theorie der schönen Künste (Leipzig, 177174). As a model, Sulzer cites Karl Wilhelm Ramlers libretto for Der Tod Jesu (1754), a text that is perhaps best known today through Carl Heinrich Grauns 1755 setting. In the decades that followed, several Passion oratorios appeared in Germany that were influenced to some degree by Der Tod Jesu. Within this group, Rosettis Der sterbende Jesus, completed in March 1785 and performed on Good Friday of that year, won special approval among the audiences of southern Germany. The numerous printed and manuscript copies preserved today in archives and collections throughout Europe attest to its enormous contemporary appeal. In addition to the complete work, individual movements were performed outside the context of the oratorio, keyboard arrangements were made, and portions of the work were freely adapted into parodies. Even Mozart, a musician of especially discriminating taste, included a copy of Rosettis oratorio in his personal library. This edition, based on the manuscript parts used in the works first performance, presents Der sterbende Jesus for the first time in a modern edition.
Book Synopsis The Music of James Bond by : Jon Burlingame
Download or read book The Music of James Bond written by Jon Burlingame and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the music that accompanies the cinematic adventures of Ian Fleming's intrepid Agent 007 is one of surprising real-life drama. In The Music of James Bond, author Jon Burlingame throws open studio and courtroom doors alike to reveal the full and extraordinary history of the sounds of James Bond, spicing the story with a wealth of fascinating and previously undisclosed tales. Burlingame devotes a chapter to each Bond film, providing the backstory for the music (including a reader-friendly analysis of each score) from the last-minute creation of the now-famous "James Bond Theme" in Dr. No to John Barry's trend-setting early scores for such films as Goldfinger and Thunderball. We learn how synthesizers, disco and modern electronica techniques played a role in subsequent scores, and how composer David Arnold reinvented the Bond sound for the 1990s and beyond. The book brims with behind-the-scenes anecdotes. Burlingame examines the decades-long controversy over authorship of the Bond theme; how Frank Sinatra almost sang the title song for Moonraker; and how top artists like Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones, Paul McCartney, Carly Simon, Duran Duran, Gladys Knight, Tina Turner, and Madonna turned Bond songs into chart-topping hits. The author shares the untold stories of how Eric Clapton played guitar for Licence to Kill but saw his work shelved, and how Amy Winehouse very nearly co-wrote and sang the theme for Quantum of Solace. New interviews with many Bond songwriters and composers, coupled with extensive research as well as fascinating and previously undiscovered details--temperamental artists, unexpected hits, and the convergence of great music and unforgettable imagery--make The Music of James Bond a must read for 007 buffs and all popular music fans. This paperback edition is brought up-to-date with a new chapter on Skyfall.

Book Synopsis The Telemann Compendium by : Steven David Zohn
Download or read book The Telemann Compendium written by Steven David Zohn and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first guide to research on the Baroque composer Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) in any language. Although the scholarly 'Telemann Renaissance' is now a half-century old, there has never been a book intended to serve as a gateway for further study. Apart from a handful of biographies, dictionary entries, and annotated bibliographies (many of which are now severely out of date), students of Telemann's life and music have been left to dive into the secondary literature in order to get their bearings. Considering that this now burgeoning literature has mainly taken the form of German dissertations and conference proceedings, it is small wonder that the field of Telemann studies has been relatively slow to develop in the English-speaking world. And yet the veritable explosion of performances, both live and recorded, of the composer's music in recent decades has won him an ever-increasing following among musicians and concert-goers worldwide. As with other books in the Composer Compendia series, the book includes a brief biography, dictionary, works-list, and selective bibliography. STEVEN ZOHN is Laura Carnell Professor of Music History at Temple University.
Book Synopsis The Encyclopedia of Film Composers by : Thomas S. Hischak

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a century, original music has been composed for the cinema. From the early days when live music accompanied silent films to the present in which a composer can draw upon a full orchestra or a lone synthesizer to embody a composition, music has been an integral element of most films. By the late 1930s, movie studios had established music departments, and some of the greatest names in film music emerged during Hollywood’s Golden Age, including Alfred Newman, Max Steiner, Dimitri Tiomkin, and Bernard Herrmann. Over the decades, other creators of screen music offered additional memorable scores, and some composers—such as Henry Mancini, Randy Newman, and John Williams—have become household names. The Encyclopedia of Film Composers features entries on more than 250 movie composers from around the world. It not only provides facts about these artists but also explains what makes each composer notable and discusses his or her music in detail. Each entry includes Biographical material Important dates Career highlights Analysis of the composer’s musical style Complete list of movie credits This book brings recognition to the many men and women who have written music for movies over the past one hundred years. In addition to composers from the United States and Great Britain, artists from dozens of other countries are also represented. A rich resource of movie music history, The Encyclopedia of Film Composers will be of interest to fans of cinema in general as well as those who want to learn more about the many talented individuals who have created memorable scores.
