The helium industry has a long-term future and this important gas will have a role to play for many decades to come. Major new users of helium are expected to enter the market, especially in nuclear energy (both fission and fusion). Prices and volumes supplied and expected to rise and this will prompt greater efforts towards the development of new helium sources and helium conservation and recycling.

Book excerpt: "Helium: From Discovery to Modern Energy Applications" is an authoritative exploration of helium, one of the most fascinating and essential elements in the modern world. This comprehensive guide takes readers on a journey from helium's initial discovery in the sun's spectrum to its pivotal role in cutting-edge technologies and its potential as a game-changer in future energy systems. Helium is more than just a gas used to fill balloons—it's a critical resource that underpins advancements in fields as diverse as healthcare, electronics, aerospace, and energy. This book delves into the unique properties of helium that make it indispensable for applications such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), semiconductor manufacturing, and space exploration. It also addresses the looming challenges of helium scarcity and the innovative solutions being developed to ensure its availability for future generations. The book is structured to provide both a historical perspective and a forward-looking view of helium's role in our world. Early chapters offer a fascinating account of helium's discovery and its initial uses, setting the stage for more technical discussions on its physical and chemical properties. Readers will gain a deep understanding of how helium functions in cryogenics, superconductivity, and quantum computing, as well as its potential as a fuel for nuclear fusion. Special emphasis is placed on helium-3, a rare isotope with promising applications in energy production. The book explores the ambitious idea of mining helium-3 on the Moon and its potential to revolutionize the global energy landscape. Through detailed analysis and case studies, the author sheds light on the economic, environmental, and ethical considerations surrounding helium's use. Written by Ron Legarski, a telecommunications and technology solutions expert with over two decades of industry experience, this book combines technical expertise with practical insights. Ron's deep understanding of the technological landscape, coupled with his interest in helium's role in the future of energy, makes this book a valuable resource for professionals, researchers, and students alike. "Helium: From Discovery to Modern Energy Applications" is an essential read for anyone interested in the intersection of science, technology, and industry. Whether you are a scientist, engineer, policymaker, or simply curious about the role of helium in modern life, this book offers a thorough and engaging exploration of an element that continues to shape the future of technology and energy.

Book excerpt: The Helium Privatization Act of 1996 (P.L. 104-273) directs the Department of the Interior to begin liquidating the U.S. Federal Helium Reserve by 2005 in a manner consistent with "minimum market disruption" and at a price given by a formula specified in the act. It also mandates that the Department of the Interior "enter into appropriate arrangements with the National Academy of Sciences to study and report on whether such disposal of helium reserves will have a substantial adverse effect on U.S. scientific, technical, biomedical, or national security interests." This report is the product of that mandate. To provide context, the committee has examined the helium market and the helium industry as a whole to determine how helium users would be affected under various scenarios for selling the reserve within the act's constraints. The Federal Helium Reserve, the Bush Dome reservoir, and the Cliffside facility are mentioned throughout this report. It is important to recognize that they are distinct entities. The Federal Helium Reserve is federally owned crude helium gas that currently resides in the Bush Dome reservoir. The Cliffside facility includes the storage facility on the Bush Dome reservoir and the associated buildings pipeline.

Book excerpt: A re-examination, revision, and re-evaluation of the data base contained within the 1975 document, ERDA-13, The Energy-Related Applications of Helium, were completed and results are presented in this report. New technical and resource data, current legislative proposals, updated supply-and-demand relationships, latest legal developments, programmatic changes affectng the future demand for helium, socio-economic aspects, and the effects of the latest energy-consumption projections were considered and are discussed. In contrast to ERDA-13, however, explicit recommendations with respect to the formulation of Federal helium policy, as it pertains to the energy-related applications of helium, are not given.

Book excerpt: The importance of helium as a critical resource material has been recognized specifically by the scientific community and more generally by the 1960 Congressional mandate to institute a long-range conservation program. A major study mandated by the Energy Reorganization Act of 1974 resulted in the publication in 1975 of the document, The Energy-Related Applications of Helium, ERDA-13. This document contained a comprehensive review and analysis relating to helium resources and present and future supply/demand relationships with particular emphasis upon those helium-dependent energy-related technologies projected to be implemented in the post-2000 year time period, e.g., fusion. An updated overview of the helium situation as it exists today is presented. Since publication of ERDA-13, important changes in the data base underlying that document have occurred. The data have since been reexamined, revised, and new information included. Potential supplies of helium from both conventional and unconventional natural gas resources, projected supply/demand relationships to the year 2030 based upon a given power-generation scenario, projected helium demand for specific energy-related technologies, and the supply options (national and international) available to meet that demand are discussed. An updated review will be given of the energy requirements for the extraction of helium from natural gas as they relate to the concentration of helium. A discussion is given concerning the technical and economic feasibility of several methods available both now and conceptually possible, to extract helium from helium-lean natural gas, the atmosphere, and outer space. Finally, a brief review is given of the 1980 Congressional activities with respect to the introduction and possible passage of new helium conservation legislation.
