Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The present study examined the expectations that parents possess for the future employment of their child with a developmental disability. Parental expectations were investigated in relation to the severity level of their child's disability, their concerns regarding their child's future employment, and their awareness of workplace supports available for their child. Eighty-three parents with a child receiving services through a Regional Center in Southern California completed and returned the mailed survey. To analyze the responses, descriptive statistics, frequencies, correlations, and t -tests were conducted. The work expectations expressed by parents of children with a severe developmental disability were lower than expectations of parents of children with a lesser developmental disability level. Regardless of their child's developmental disability level, parents held varied and numerous work-related concerns for their child and expressed having low awareness of workplace supports available. Implications of these results for promoting employment for adults with developmental disabilities are discussed.
