Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. National Park Service needs much better scientific information to protect the nation's parks for future generations, and research must be an essential element in its mandate. Science and the National Parks examines the reasons why science is important to the national parks, reviews previous evaluations of research in the parks, and recommends ways to improve the current science program. The book stresses the need for two distinct but related approaches to research, called "science for the parks" and "parks for science." Science for the parks includes research to gain understanding of park resources and develop effective management strategies. The parks for science concept recognizes that the national parks are potentially very important to scientific investigations of broad national and global environmental problems and invaluable for understanding the ecological response to anthropogenic change. Science and the National Parks is a critical assessment of the problems hampering the current Park Service science program, providing strong recommendations to help the agency establish a true mandate for science, create separate funding and autonomy for the program, and enhance its credibility and quality.

Book excerpt: The balance of nature in any strict sense has been upset long ago…The only option we have is to create a new balance objectively determined for each area in accordance with the intended use of that area.” --Aldo Leopold, 1927, in a letter to the Superintendent of Glacier National Park The planning and management staff of state/national parks and protected areas face a complex set of management problems and an uncertain future. Today, internal and external forces are combining with changes in management philosophy (from a species to an ecosystem focus) to create a new direction in natural resources management. National Parks and Protected Areas: Approaches for Balancing Social, Economic and Ecological Values is peerless in its unified treatment of the issues surrounding this subject. From decision-making for planning and management to the principles of ecology and economics, this text examines the analytical methods, information technologies, and planning and management problems associated with protected area planning and management. Protected area managers and students in undergraduate and graduate courses in natural resource management will appreciate this highly readable book. Features Include: A multidisciplinary, systems perspective Focus on science- and knowledge-based natural resource management Concentration on North American national parks and protected areas with information and examples from other parts of the world Clarification of methods for dealing with social, economic, and ecological uncertainty Explanations of biophysical and economic simulation models and information management technologies: GIS, remote sensing, decision support systems, computer animation, etc. Discussion of the role of local communities and joint decision making for designing and implementing management strategies Case studies which show multi-dimensional decision-making for specific management problems and issuesNatural resource policy makers, members of environmental organizations, and other stakeholders will also benefit from an enhanced understanding of the complex social, economic and ecological functions and values of national parks and protected areas facilitated by explanations of ecological and economic concepts that allow comprehension by individuals with limited background in these areas.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from National Park Service Science in the 21st Century: Recommendations Concerning Future Directions for Science and Scientific Resource Management in the National Parks The Science Committee considered the history Of natural resource management in the National Park System and a wide range of issues relating to program operations; policies guiding the natural resource management function; and opportunities facing the National Park Service, an agency long revered by the American public, which is charged with pursuing the highest conservation and preservation purposes. America's National Park System represents a profoundly egali tarian concept - landscapes of incomparable beauty and grandeur that are to be shared and enjoyed by all people. From the very beginning, the national park idea marked a dramatic, historic step in nature preservation, with its mandate that the parks be retained in their natural condition, thereby extending the sharing beyond the human species to all native flora and fauna within the national parks. The Science Committee believes that this broad, inclusive sharing of unique segments Of the American landscape, with all of their native species, forms the Vital core of the national park idea, endowing it with high idealism and purpose that have spread throughout the nation and around the world. The Committee views this high purpose as self-evident, and calls on the National Park Service to continue strengthening its dedication to these ideals as the most fundamental precepts of national park manage ment. This report is respectfully submitted to the National Park System Advi sory Board by Sylvia A. Earle, with the acknowledgment oji and gratitude to, members of the National Parks Science Committee; and also with thanks to the National Park Service for its invaluable assistance. This book was released on 2001-10-12 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diploma Thesis from the year 2001 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: Good, Klagenfurt University (OPM (Organisations-, Personal- und Managemententwicklung)), language: English, abstract: 1 Introduction „In order to sustain our global environment and improve the quality of living in our human settlements, we commit ourselves to sustainable patterns of production, consumption, transportation and settlement development, pollution prevention, respect for the carrying capacity of eco-systems, and the preservation of opportunities for future generations“(1) (Istanbul Declaration on Human Settlements, June 1996). National Parks in the United States and almost all over the world are being subjected to a paradigm shift in park conservation and management. In the early years of National Parks, conservation strategies and management actions were based on a belief that parks were static landscapes, isolated from human activities and adjacent lands, and that they were meant solely for the pleasure of visitors. Attempts to resolve system dysfunctions - wrought by erroneous views and the consequences of subsequent management policies, such as predator removal and fire suppression - were approached one species at a time. Today, this paradigm is slowly shifting to a knowledge-based understanding of ecosystems as es now recognize the need to include people as part of the system and to address causes, rather than symptoms, of system dysfunction by managing whole ecosystems, not just single species. However, National Park Management is not just limited to conservation strategies. National Park Management includes a widespread variety of management activities such as the most essential activities like park system planning, land protection, natural resource management (biological resource management, fire management, water resource management, air resource management, geologic resource management, soundscape and lightscape management), cultural resource management (e.g. archeological resources, cultural landscape, ethnographic resources, historic structures), wilderness preservation and management, interpretation and education, tourism/visitor management, and park facilities management. It is clear that in each park the emphasis of management activities should be adapted to the needs of the park, its problems and challenges. However, the next generation of park managers will need to be able to tolerate ambiguity, manage change, manage tourism patterns, set and communicate priorities, handle controversy, and understand political processes.
