Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered how the technology that is shaping our world works? From mainstream technologies such as computing and the Internet, to emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing, it is no secret that the world is heavily influenced by technology. Yet, the technology that we depend upon is often not fully understood by those not specialized in the field.Books about technology can intimidating. This book has been written to be approachable and easy to understand. It provides an introduction to a host of technologies and trends that explain our technological present and our technological future. It attempts to strike a balance between providing educational content, but in plain language with a little bit of prognostication thrown in for good measure. There is a constant barrage of new technologies but the plain language that describes them as well as their implications is often illusive. And, with these new technologies come new questions. Will there be a robot uprising? Will we be able to grow enough food in the future? Should I be worried about my privacy? What is artificial intelligence anyway? Will we ultimately merge with technology? While this book touches on many of the technical aspects of these technologies, it has been written to be approachable and does not presuppose a deep technical background on behalf of the reader. The book starts with a day in the life of Sally, who lives a few years in the future. It then goes on to explain the technologies that brought us to this point as well as those that will create that future. Set against the backdrop of two colliding technologies - artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, this book explores and educates the reader on a host of technologies that are transforming the world. From the background and history that brought us to this point, to the technologies driving this transformation, to the implications it will have for humanity and the opportunities it will provide, this book explores this coming era.About the author: I have spent my career in the technology field and have traveled the globe talking to executives, organizations, students, and the press about technology trends and their impact on our lives. A consistent question is always posed - where can I learn more about these topics? I decided to write a book that I could not find. One rich with information about the technologies that are shaping our lives, but most importantly, a book that was approachable, and easy to read. I have lived in Silicon Valley most of my life and have worked in large technology companies as well as start-ups. I have worn many hats, from engineer to CTO, entrepreneur to professor, programmer to CIO, and even a futurist. I love technology and hold numerous patents in fields such as the Internet of Things (IoT), connected cars, networking technologies, virtual people, mobile phone technologies, virtual spaces, and more. But, most of all I care about how technology is used to improve the human condition. My views have been shared by Forbes, Fortune, CIO Magazine, Financial Times, The BBC, CNN, Tech Crunch, Politico, San Jose Mercury News, Computer World, New York Times, Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Nikkei Business, Silicon Valley Business Journal, Business Insider, MSNBC, Discovery Channel, History Channel, InfoWeek, Gigaom, MarketWatch, ReadWriteWeb, Mashable, TMCnet, and countless others as well as through a very active social media presence

Book excerpt: Emerging Technologies / Life at the Edge of the Future invites us to think forward from our present moment of planetary, public and everyday crisis, through the prism of emerging technologies. It calls for a new ethical, responsible and equitable path towards possible futures, curated through in-depth engagement with and across experiential, environmental and technological possibilities. It tackles three of the most significant challenges for contemporary society by asking: how emerging technologies are implicated in the sites of everyday lives; what place emerging technologies have in an evolving world in crisis; and how we might better imagine and shape ethical, equitable and responsible futures. The book interweaves three narratives, each of which advances three sets of concerns for our societal futures: ‘Emergence’, which addresses futures, trust and hope; ‘Worlds’, which addresses data, air and energy; and ‘Technologies’, which addresses the future of mobilities, homes and work. Not simply a critical study of emerging technologies, this book is also an approach to thinking and practice in times of global crisis that plays out a mode of future-focused scholarship and action for the first half of the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: The title of this new book: “The Connected Home” reflects the move away from the idea that smart homes would alter the lives of those living in them by providing technologies to take over tasks that were previously the responsibility of the householder, such as managing entertainment, education – and even eating! Up until around 10 years ago this view was commonplace but time has shown that the technologies to support a smart home have not developed in such a way as to support this premise. Instead, what people do in their homes has moved the concept of a smart home into that of the ‘connected home’. The rise of on-line games technologies, video connections via Skype, social networking, internet browsing etc are now an integral part of the home environment and have had a significant effect on the home. The contributors to this exciting new book consider and discuss the effects and ramifications of the connected home from a variety of viewpoints: an examination of the take-up of personal computers and the Internet in domestic situations; an analysis of the changing intersection of technology and human habits in the connected home; the impact of gaming, texting, e-book readers, tablets and other devices and their effect on the social conditions of a household; the relationship between digital messaging applications and real geography; and an overview of how sensing technologies for the smart home might evolve (lightweight medical technologies for example). The book culminates by addressing unfinished ambitions from the smart home agenda, the factors that have prevented their realisation, and addresses the need for extending research into the area.

Book excerpt: Are you ready for the IoT revolution? The Internet of Things (IoT) will soon be everywhere—embedded in interconnected devices we’ll use every day, and this book documents the shifts now under way. Cars, appliances, and wearables already transmit real-time data to improve performance, and new IoT products can even save your life. Consumer goods are just the tip of the iceberg. Amid projections that 30 billion smart devices will be linked soon, traditional companies such as Siemens, GE, and John Deere are preparing for profound changes to management, strategy, manufacturing, and maintenance. With the IoT, for example, sensors warn when a critical assembly-line part is about to break, or track how customers actually use products. Data hubs collect and share information instantly with departments, supply chains, partners, and customers— anchoring the organization and replacing hierarchies with circular systems. Written by a leading IoT strategist, The Future is Smart explains how companies are tapping technology to: Optimize supply chains Maximize quality Boost safety Increase efficiency Reduce waste Cut costs Revolutionize product design Delight customers For those who are ready, the opportunities are endless. This big-think book reveals concrete actions for thriving in this new tech-enabled world.

Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2019 in the subject Sociology - Miscellaneous, grade: 1, University of Vienna, language: English, abstract: This paper discusses the semantic tools used by technological frontrunners to establish imaginaries in the light of the development of the CRISPR/Cas9 technology. A grounded inspired theory approach is employed to untangle these tools, used in an interview with a leading proponent and researcher in genetic engineering, George Church. The analysis identifies three tools – narration, comparison and enticement – that technological frontrunners utilize to translate their ideas into a convincing vision that has the potential to be incorporated into the collective imagination of sociotechnical futures.
