Book excerpt: As part of the Army's Future Combat Systems (FCS) transformation effort, the newly redesigned Small Unmanned Ground Vehicle (SUGV) is required to use a common radio for communication between the SUGV's operator and the FCS network environment. FCS has proposed using the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) Soldier-level Integrated Communications Environment (SLICE) radio operating with the Soldier Radio Waveform (SRW) as the SUGV radio solution. In the 2007 Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) On-The-Move experiment, the FCS Network Analysis and Integration Laboratory (NAIL) conducted initial experiments to simulate the teleoperation of a SUGV-class platform using an implementation of this radio system called the Wearable Soldier Radio Terminal (WSRT). Working with NAIL representatives, U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) engineers integrated the WSRT radios onto an ARL-modified PackBot system so that relevant real-world data could be collected. This report examines the integration effort that took place to allow the WSRT to control the ARL PackBot system, including the hardware and software used, and focuses on performance results, comparisons with the existing ARL radio solution, and initial conclusions.

The ARL C4ISR system included multimodal unattended ground sensors, a trip wire imager, multiple human-portable robotic vehicles (PackBots), and an unmanned scout/light cargo carrying robotic vehicle (R-Gator). This report discusses the work done at ARL on the mobile ad hoc networking system for controlling robotic assets, which was created for the C4ISR OTM experiment. Further, it examines the results of a number of field tests performed in preparation for and during the experiment.

This development is part of the Human Robotics Interaction Army Technology Objective in which soldier workload models of individual systems are being developed with the intent of integrating them into one all-encompassing model. This Improved Performance Integration Research Tool (IMPRINT) model will enable the investigation of individual to overall workload and will examine how these soldier-systems can effectively combine their efforts to more efficiently accomplish a mission. FCS FoS will rely heavily on unmanned systems such as unmanned ground vehicles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to assume such roles as intelligence gatherer, perimeter security, vehicle reconnaissance, reconnaissance and surveillance for initial entry forces, call for fire, battle damage assessment, etc. In fact, at least 11 types of UAVs were committed to Operation Iraqi Freedom, demonstrating the current need for the capabilities within a commander's arsenal, a model of operator workload was developed for the Raven small UAV (SUAV). This project describes the detailed task analysis used to build an IMPRINT model and the initial model runs for determining the workload associated with operating the Raven SUAV with a two-person team.

Results suggested that robotic controllers supporting infantry units had higher workloads and stress than controllers supporting non-line-of-sight cannon units, mounted combat system units, or reconnaissance units, perhaps because infantry units are more vulnerable and require closer surveillance. Also, individuals controlling all three sensor types had higher workloads and stress than those controlling other combinations of assets. Human factors recommendations for the interface included an ability to automatically track a target, switch to teleoperation to make slight adjustments, an auto-scan function on the sensor, and the ability for the platform to automatically plot a route to a grid location. Some potential limitations of this study include the fact that the workload may have been affected by other factors such as experience or training; the robotic platforms may have been operated simultaneously or sequentially; and the interface used in this study may or may not mirror the (to be determined) future interfaces.

UGVs are more efficient in combating terrorism and in remote locations. Unmanned Ground Vehicles help and enhance the front-line soldier positions. This robot's ability is mostly contingent on keeping the soldiers safe or, at the absolute least, reducing the amount of casualties sustained during combat.

Further, an analysis of potential acquisition strategies recommends movement away from the current theater provided equipment model of the systems and instead pushes for the adoption of the technology as MTOE equipment focusing on leveraging scheduled software and processor upgrades to maintain equipment as state of the art.

UGVs have been discussed for a number of missions, including antitank, mine neutralization, physical security, smoke generation, scout, sentry, forward observer, and others. This report describes and discusses one of the first military UGVs, the robotics test bed (RTB). The RTB is a teleoperated vehicle with on-board automatic target acquisition system and turret-mounted weapon surrogate. The perspective of this report is primarily on robotic target engagement, with other aspects of the program and equipment being covered as context. The history of the program provides context for system design. Major subsystems of the vehicle are described, with detailed description of the target acquisition and engagement subsystems. A description of the use of the system in a recent demonstration of the capabilities of military robotics illustrates how such a system might be used in war fighting. Issues in robotic target engagement are discussed and further work is proposed.

To provide insight into how the numbers and capabilities of UAVs affect a Future Force Combined Arms Battalion s (CAB s) ability to secure a Northeast Asia urban objective, a simulation was built and analyzed. 46,440 computational experiments were conducted to assess how varying the opposing force and the numbers, tactics, and capabilities of UAVs affects the CAB s ability to secure the objective with minimal losses. The primary findings, over the factors and ranges examined, are: UAVs significantly enhance the CAB s performance; UAV capabilities and their tactics outweigh the number of UAVs flying; battalion level UAVs, especially when armed, are critical in the opening phases of the battle, as they facilitate the rapid attrition of enemy High Pay-off Targets; and, at least one company level and a platoon level UAV enhances dismounts survivability later in the battle.

Book excerpt: Abstract : The past decade has seen the rapid development and deployment of unmanned systems throughout the world in both civilian and military applications. Significant development has been led by the Department of Defense (DoD), which has sought to develop and field military systems, such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), with elevated levels of autonomy to accomplish their mission with reduced funding and manpower. As their role increases, such systems must be able to adapt and learn, and make nondeterministic decisions. Current unmanned systems exhibit minimal autonomous behaviors. As their autonomy increases and their behaviors become more intelligent (adapting and learning from previous experiences), the state space for their behaviors becomes non deterministic or intractably complex.Consequently, fielding such systems requires extensive testing and evaluation, as well as verification and validation to determine a system’s performance and the acceptable level of risk to make it releasable – a challenging task. To address this, I apply a novel systems perspective to develop a model-based framework to predict future system performance based on the complexity of the operating environment using newly introduced complexity measures and learned costs. Herein I consider an autonomous military ground robot navigating in complex off-road environments. Book excerpt: The US Army Tank Automotive Research Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC), Army Research Laboratory (ARL), and Corps of Engineers Engineering Research and Development Center (ERDC) are working towards the development of virtual simulation technologies and their employment towards experimentation associated with command and control on the move and the control of unmanned ground vehicles. The emphasis of the effort involves the intrinsic mobility and vibratory characteristics of the ground platform and the interface between the platform and the human operator. The planned experiments will be executed in an immersive environment specially constructed with audio, visual, and motion sensory stimuli within a Future Combat Systems (FCS) crew station in order to present the greatest degree of presence to the human operator.
