Book Synopsis An Introduction to Microscopy by Means of Light, Electrons, X-Rays, or Ultrasound by : Eugene Rochow
Download or read book An Introduction to Microscopy by Means of Light, Electrons, X-Rays, or Ultrasound written by Eugene Rochow and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people look upon a microscope as a mere instrument(l); to them microscopy is instrumentation. Other people consider a microscope to be simply an aid to the eye; to them microscopy is primarily an expan sion of macroscopy. In actuality, microscopy is both objective and sub jective; it is seeing through an instrument by means of the eye, and more importantly, the brain. The function of the brain is to interpret the eye's image in terms of the object's structure. Thought and experience are required to distinguish structure from artifact. It is said that Galileo (1564-1642) had his associates first look through his telescope microscope at very familiar objects to convince them that the image was a true representation of the object. Then he would have them proceed to hitherto unknown worlds too far or too small to be seen with the un aided eye. Since Galileo's time, light microscopes have been improved so much that performance is now very close to theoretical limits. Electron microscopes have been developed in the last four decades to exhibit thousands of times the resolving power of the light microscope. Through the news media everyone is made aware of the marvelous microscopical accomplishments in imagery. However, little or no hint is given as to what parts of the image are derived from the specimen itself and what parts are from the instrumentation, to say nothing of the changes made during preparation of the specimen.
Book Synopsis Introduction to Microscopy by Means of Light, Electrons, X Rays, or Acoustics by : Theodore G. Rochow
Download or read book Introduction to Microscopy by Means of Light, Electrons, X Rays, or Acoustics written by Theodore G. Rochow and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following three printings of the First Edition (1978), the publisher has asked for a Second Edition to bring the contents up to date. In doing so the authors aim to show how the newer microscopies are related to the older types with respect to theoretical resolving power (what you pay for) and resolution (what you get). The book is an introduction to students, technicians, technologists, and scientists in biology, medicine, science, and engineering. It should be useful in academic and industrial research, consulting, and forensics; how ever, the book is not intended to be encyclopedic. The authors are greatly indebted to the College of Textiles of North Carolina State University at Raleigh for support from the administration there for typing, word processing, stationery, mailing, drafting diagrams, and general assistance. We personally thank Joann Fish for word process ing, Teresa M. Langley and Grace Parnell for typing services, Mark Bowen for drawing graphs and diagrams, Chuck Gardner for photographic ser vices, Deepak Bhattavahalli for his work with the proofs, and all the other people who have given us their assistance. The authors wish to acknowledge the many valuable suggestions given by Eugene G. Rochow and the significant editorial contributions made by Elizabeth Cook Rochow.

Book Synopsis Interpretive Techniques for Microstructural Analysis by : J. McCall
Download or read book Interpretive Techniques for Microstructural Analysis written by J. McCall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years microstructural analysis has been a rapidly changing field of scien tific endeavor. No longer are the efforts of the microstructural analysts (sometimes referred to as metallographers, materialographers, ceramographers, and similar desig nations) limited to the tasks of polishing, etching, and photographing specimens of materials. The performance demanded of materials used for many current applica tions requires much more complete characterizations than were possible only a scant few years ago. Although the individuals who have been expected to develop new and improved techniques to permit these required characterizations have been severely challenged, in large part they have met the challenge. In view of the many new developments in the field of microstructural analysis and recognizing the requirements to communicate these developments to the wide audience that might make use of them, the American Society for Metals and the In ternational Metallographic Society joined forces to co-sponsor a symposium that was intended to bring participants and attendees up to date on the subject "Inter pretive Techniques for Microstructural Analysis". This symposium was held in Min neapolis, Minnesota, USA, June 29 and 30, 1975. It followed two earlier symposia co-sponsored by the same two societies on other subjects of current interest to the metallographic community, Microstructural Analysis - Tools and Techniques, 1972, and Metallographic Specimen Preparation - Optical and Electron Micros copy, 1973.

Book Synopsis Identification of Materials by : Anton A. Benedetti-Pichler
Download or read book Identification of Materials written by Anton A. Benedetti-Pichler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been written for the practicing chemist whose occasional task may be qualitative analysis. It deals with the investigation of things as they are without any limitations to the scope. It emphasizes the identification of materials - inorganic, organic, organized (biological), common, rare, described or not described in the accessible literatur- as they actually occur in nature and industry, or are met in the investigation of mishaps and crime. The description of techniques - macro to submicro - and the practice exercises have been included since the teaching of these arts is rarely a part of academic curricula and it happens with increasing frequency that chemists have to acquire them "on the job". In the systematic procedure given, emphasis is placed upon the investiga tion of minute specimens and upon acute reasoning that continuously weighs all accumulating evi9.ence. The work begins with the consideration of the history of the material under investigation. Especially when specks of all organic substance shall be identified, it should be realized that the discovery of the source - and consequently of the possibilities involve- may be the most valuable clue to an efficient solution of the problem.

Book Synopsis Judgment Day for the Shroud of Turin by : Walter C. Mccrone
Download or read book Judgment Day for the Shroud of Turin written by Walter C. Mccrone and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2011-02-02 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most precious relics of the Catholic Church, the Shroud of Turin, is still believed by many to be the cloth that covered Jesus Christ in the tomb. When displayed to the public, the shroud becomes an international tourist attraction with interest heightening it to an eighth Wonder of the World.Yet scientists, led by famed microanaylist Dr. Walter McCrone, have proved the shroud to be a fake, a medieval painting that can be easily duplicated today using the simplest of materials. The painstaking investigation that led McCrone to this historic discovery is recounted here in Judgment Day for the Shroud of Turin, one of only two books to scientifically, and fully, discount the shroud story. Upon close examination, even leading members of the Catholic Church had to agree with McCrone''s findings, which gained international attention when featured on the A&E Television Network.Told in fascinating detail, with all the intrigue of a good mystery novel, McCrone''s memoir is a lasting contribution to shroud study, one that occupied more than twenty years of the author''s life.

Download or read book Resinography written by Theodore Rochow and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resinography is a strange new word to many people. Like all scientific terms, it is a word coined for a specific purpose: to indicate (in this case) that resins, polymers, and plastics write their own history on the molecular and other structural levels. The word indicates further that anyone trained and equipped to ask the right questions (by means of instruments and techniques) will be able to read that history. That person must have sufficient training and experience to interpret the answers, of course, and he or she needs to have the temperament of a detective. But in the end, as readers of this book will discover, one is able to identify the material, to determine its history of treatment, and to learn much about its possible field of usefulness. Obviously, the resinographer seeks to do the same thing with res ins, polymers, and plastics that the metallographer does with metals and their alloys. Often the investigative techniques and the instru ments, too, are similar, but sometimes they are decidedly different. Perhaps it would be best to say that resinography and metallographyl (and petrography as well) share a common origin, and that origin is deeply rooted in microscopy. The "grandfather" of all three "ographies" was Henry Clifton Sorby (1826-1908),2 who initiated 3 metallography and petrography, and was the first to report on the microstructure of a resin (amber, a natural fossil resin).
