Book excerpt: Static-pressure signatures parallel to the flight path of the launch and entry configurations of the space shuttle were measured. The launch configurations, consisting of an equivalent body of revolution (representing the orbiter and external fuel tank) with a solid exhaust gas plume attached, was tested at an angle of attack of 0 deg. The entry configuration (orbiter only) was tested over an angle-of-attack range from 10 deg to 40 deg. Calculated pressure signatures were in good agreement with measured signatures for both configurations.

Book excerpt: Pressure distributions on a 0.02-scale model of the Space Shuttle orbiter forward fuselage were obtained in the 22-inch aerodynamic leg of the Langley Hypersonic Helium Tunnel Facility at a nominal free-stream Mach number of 21.5 and a ratio of specific heats of 1.67 for inclusion in the database of the Shuttle entry air data system (SEADS). The data were measured at model angles of attack of 0 deg to 50 deg in 5 deg increments for zero sideslip angle and at model sideslip angles of -5 deg to 5 deg for angles of attack equal to 5, 20, 35, and 40 deg. These data displayed trends similar to those observed in other wind tunnels at Mach 6 and 10 in air. Specifically noted is a shift in the location of the stagnation point at angles of attack above 15 deg; this effect did not, however, occur in flight. By comparison, the data obtained at Mach 6 in the Langley Hypersonic CF4 Tunnel, corresponding to a lower ratio of specific heats in the postshock region than those in helium and air, showed some reduction of the stagnation point shift at the higher angles of attack. The differences between flight and wind tunnel pressure distributions are believed due primarily to high-temperature gas chemistry effects in flight, which include lower effective specific heat ratios but which were not completely duplicated in the wind tunnels. Book excerpt: Low-boom model pressure signatures are often measured at two or more wind-tunnel facilities. Preliminary measurements are made at small separation distances in a wind tunnel close at hand, and a second set of pressure signatures is measured at larger separation distances in a wind-tunnel facility with a larger test section. In this report, a method for correcting and standardizing the wind-tunnel-measured pressure signatures obtained in different wind tunnel facilities is presented and discussed. Mack, Robert J. Book excerpt: Revised 1990-1991 sonic-boom design and analysis methodology was assessed by applying it to the design of three low-boom concepts. Models of these concepts were built and used to measure pressure signatures in the wind tunnel. An analysis of wind-tunnel data showed unexpected nacelle-inlet and the nacelle-wing interference-lift shocks in the pressure signatures from the two engine-under-the-wing models, but not in the measured pressure signatures from the wind-tunnel model with the engine nacelles mounted on the aft fuselage. However, additional lift-induced shocks were found in the pressure signature data from all three wind-tunnel models indicating that other flow-field disturbance effects were present.Mack, Robert J.Langley Research CenterSONIC BOOMS; FLOW DISTRIBUTION; DESIGN ANALYSIS; NACELLES; INTERFERENCE LIFT; WIND TUNNEL TESTS; SIGNATURES; WINGS...

Book excerpt: Unexpected shocks on wind-tunnel-measured pressure signatures prompted questions about design methods, pressure signature measurement techniques, and the quality of measurements in the flow fields near lifting models. Some of these unexpected shocks were the result of component integration methods. Others were attributed to the three-dimension nature of the flow around a lifting model, to inaccuracies in the prediction of the area-ruled lift, or to wing-tip stall effects. This report discusses the low-boom model wind-tunnel data where these unexpected shocks were initially observed, the physics of the lifting wing/body model's flow field, the wind-tunnel data used to evaluate the applicability of methods for calculating equivalent areas due to lift, the performance of lift prediction codes, and tip stall effects so that the cause of these shocks could be determined.Mack, Robert J.Langley Research CenterPRESSURE MEASUREMENT; WIND TUNNEL TESTS; FLOW DISTRIBUTION; MEASURE AND INTEGRATION; WIND TUNNEL MODELS; BODY-WING CONFIGURATIONS; SIGNATURES; PREDICTIONS; NEAR FIELDS
