The courage and skill of the Zulus have been proved to our cost, and had those who managed affairs in the Zulu war been better acquainted with the sotermed savages to whom they were opposed, they would not have committed the fatal error of underrating the enemy, or of imagining that to lager the waggons, and to take every precaution against a rush of overwhelming numbers, was an indication of cowardice. The Boers with whom my experience was gained are fairly described in these pages, and were of the same class, as those who ascended Majuba Hill. When in Nova Scotia before the Boer war, I was laughed at by more than one officer, when I stated that the Boer was a formidable enemy who must be dealt with cautiously. I was assured that a corporal's guard would cause all the Boers in the country to ride or run away. Knowing this to be the opinion of many officers high in authority, it was not very difficult to prophecy the disasters that occurred. This book is merely a tale, but I have endeavoured to describe with accuracy certain historical events, and also to give a correct idea of the Zulu, and Boer, as I found them.
