Download or read book Further Improvements in Cathodic Protection of Bridge Structures written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current state-of-the-art for installing conductive polymer concrete (CPC) was assessed. New techniques, equipment and procedures were developed for field operation. Critical review of installed cathodic protection (CP) systems were made in the USA and Canada. Envisioned improvements were implemented during installation of the cathodic protection systems. Corrosion condition surveys and procedures for installation of seven cathodic protection systems on two bridges (deck and substructure) are described in detail. One bridge is exposed to a marine environment, and the other is located in a northern climate region. Test procedures, actual test data and cathodic protection corrosion control criteria are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The performance of seven cathodic protection systems installed on two mild steel reinforced concrete bridges was assessed. One bridge is located in a marine environment and the other is located in a northern climatic region. Critical review of embedded silver/silver chloride reference cells and macrocell rebar probes was made. Constant voltage and constant current control for cathodic protection systems were monitored and results are described. Test procedures and actual field data to establish cathodic protection criteria for bridge structures are discussed. The effectiveness of an improved coke-asphalt cathodic protection system for bridge decks was laboratory tested and discussed.
Book Synopsis Cathodic Protection Field Trials on Prestressed Concrete Components, Final Report by :
Download or read book Cathodic Protection Field Trials on Prestressed Concrete Components, Final Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the final report in a study to demonstrate the feasibility of using cathodic protection (CP) on concrete bridge structures containing prestressed steel. The interim report, FHWA-RD-95-032, has more details on the installation of selected CP systems. Past laboratory and test yard studies had indicated that overprotection could result in the evolution of atomic hydrogen and the embrittlement of prestressing steel. Systems utilizing catalyzed titanium mesh, conductive rubber, and arc-sprayed zinc anodes were installed on prestressed pilings and girders of the Howard Frankland Bridge in Tampa, Florida; and systems using flame-sprayed zinc and conductive paint anodes were installed on the soffit of prestressed box beams of the Abbey Road and West 130th Street bridges near Cleveland, Ohio. For most of the components tested, CP was achieved safely and reliably without reaching conditions that could result in embrittlement of prestressed steel.

Book excerpt: This document provides explanation, guidance, and direction concerning cathodic protection of concrete bridge elements to the highway engineer who wants to incorporate cathodic protection in a bridge project. The manual which provides background information on corrosion fundamentals, is divided into 3 parts: design, construction, and operation and maintenance. An appendix provides standard specifications for cathodic protection systems for both decks and substructures. The document is intended to be a useful reference for engineers who design and prepare specifications or who oversee turnkey operations.

Download or read book Cathodic Protection of Reinforced Concrete Bridge Elements written by and published by . This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the evolution of cathodic protection of reinforced concrete bridges and its current state-of-the-art. It discusses how cathodic protection works, and the effectiveness of the technique. An extensive history of cathodic protection of reinforced concrete is included that covers all aspects of completed projects. There are sections on condition surveys, remedial action, anode systems, design aspects, operation and maintenance, and research and development needs. All of the various types of anode systems are characterized in detail as they have been designed and constructed. The ancillary equipment common to all systems such as power supplies and monitoring equipment are reviewed. Research and development needs are addressed to bring to light the essential research work that is required to further the development and use of cathodic protection of reinforced concrete structures.

Book Synopsis Cathodic Protection for Parking Structures by : WJ. Swiat

Book excerpt: Cathodic protection systems for chloride-contaminated reinforced concrete structures have been installed and evaluated since the early 1970s. Until recently, most of these systems have been installed on bridge structures. Since cathodic protection has been recognized as the only method which can stop corroding steel in chloride-contaminated concrete, a variety of cathodic protection components have been developed for use on these structures. Although it is mostly recommended for rehabilitation efforts where chlorides are already present, it has also been used where chloride contamination is anticipated in the future. Research and implementation of cathodic protection systems has been extensively carried out by the Federal Highway Administration. Through this work, cathodic protection system guidelines for bridges are being developed. Guidelines for cathodic protection systems on reinforced concrete parking structure are needed. Unlike bridge structures, parking structures have more complex steel reinforcement schedules, more stringent structural limitations, and are built with a larger variety of differing designs. In addition, the average parking structure typically has far more concrete surface area than the average bridge structure. Structural limitations, design variations, and size of the parking structure require thorough corrosion evaluations to determine the cathodic protection system requirements. To provide the most economical and cost-effective long-term repair, more than one cathodic protection system design and/or material can be applicable to a single structure. This paper discusses design considerations and guidelines for selection of cathodic protection systems and components for parking structures.
Book Synopsis Cathodic Protection for Reinforced Concrete Structures by : Paul M. Chess
Download or read book Cathodic Protection for Reinforced Concrete Structures written by Paul M. Chess and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cathodic protection of reinforced concrete structures is a technique for rescuing corrosion damaged structures and, in certain instances, preventing them from corroding in the first place, and its use is growing. This book is for specialist contractors, large consultants and owners of corrosion damaged structures, and looks at international experience with this technique. It examines why corrosion is occurring, the differences in the application of CP with the stark dichotomy in its success and failure, and finally ways in which its performance can be improved on future installations. Information is valuable, as the success or failure of the CP system has a marked effect on the service life of the structure.
Download or read book Technical Alert written by Jack Bennett and published by Strategic Highway Research Program (Shrp). This book was released on 1994 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cathodic protection is accepted as a repair option for steel-reinforced structures that are undergoing corrosion caused by the presence of chlorides. The Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) issued a contract on cathodic protection of reinforced concrete bridge elements. The objective of part of that contract was to investigate the feasibility of improved and simplified control criteria. To this end, corrosion rates of steel in a concrete environment were measured relative to many factors, and then, data were used to appraise control criteria. This technical alert presents the results and recommendations based on that part of the work.
