Many small paintings, drawings, prints, and mementos have been removed from their frames and put in portfolios in the vault. It is my feeling that future committees on art should be cautioned against discarding works of art, because the cycle of changing taste may bring them into favor again. The portrait of john Bigelow by Frank Fowler was found, damaged, in the cellar where it had been placed by a former committee because of some dissatisfaction with the likeness. It seems to the present committee to be a pleasing and interesting work, now that it is hung in the East Room. Failure to find the name of an artist or donor in the published list of deceased members does not mean that the artist or donor was not a member at the time of the gift. The published list does not contain the names of members who resigned before death. It is my hope that this list will be useful to other committeemen in the future, since it is easier to refer to than the manuscript list.
