Book excerpt: Featuring a slow burn shifter romance and intelligent snark, this series starter is a clever mix of urban fantasy and mystery that will take you on a wild ride. Miriam Feldman is ditching her shapewear and finally letting her magic fly free. When Miri was a teen, her parents were murdered by magic assassins. These days, her aggressively normal existence as a law librarian at a boring firm has excellent medical insurance and won’t get her daughter killed. But when her bestie, her ride-or-die, gets tangled up with some vampires and goes missing, Miriam unleashes the rare and powerful shadow magic she’s kept hidden. It’s heady, liberating—and totally dangerous. Now in a race against time to save her friend, this single mom is descending into the spiderweb of the secret supernatural community where not knowing the rules is a fast-track to a painful end. Her guide? A grumpy French wolf shifter with a particular set of skills, a baffling drive to protect Miri at all costs, and the infuriating habit of constantly disagreeing with her. He may mock her To-Do lists, but he’s learned firsthand that her shadow magic literally packs a hell of a punch. The tricky thing about shadows, though, is the past casts a long one, and if Miri isn’t careful, those magic assassins will come back for the one who got away—and she’ll lose everything. Fans of Jana DeLeon, Robyn Peterman, and KF Breene, will adore Miri, a smart older heroine with zero effs left to give! Get reading now!

Book excerpt: "What I wanted after college was a job and my own apartment, but what I needed was a good comeuppance, and that’s what I got." When Dave Itzkoff graduated from Princeton in 1998–the first member of his family to earn a college degree–he expected to be rewarded with a career, and a life, that mattered. Instead, he ended up convinced that he was selling the entire institution of manhood down the river. After a series of personal and professional experiences stripped him of any lingering sense of entitlement, Itzkoff found himself working as an editor at Maxim, the pugnacious frontrunner in a new breed of men’s periodicals dubbed "lad magazines." There, he was initiated into a culture of heavily retouched girlie pictorials, dirty jokes, disingenuous sex advice, and shopping guides for expensive electronic gadgetry. And as Maxim continued its inexorable rise to become the most successful men’s magazine in modern publishing history, Itzkoff was left wondering what his work–and his life–really meant. Lads is the hilarious, heartbreaking story of Dave Itzkoff's efforts to define himself as a man while working at a magazine that was purveying a vision of young manhood–a state of perpetual adolescence–that was seductive to all but viable for none. Lads takes us deep inside one young man’s struggle with identity, responsibility, and sexuality, in an unsparingly candid account of how men really relate to one another, as fathers and sons, as employers and employees, as colleagues and friends. Lads is trenchant. Lads is perceptive. Lads is alarmingly funny. This is an unforgettable debut from a young writer of astounding talent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Teacher's Passion... She's spent years teaching students English, changing their lives and igniting a love of learning. Her passion for her job is not only fueled by a love of teaching, but a desire to escape a lifetime of personal loneliness. A survivor of sexual assault, she's also mastered the art of "self-medicating" and looking for love in all the wrong places. All that changed the day Marley walked into her class. He was just as wounded as she. . . but there were just some lines a teacher didn't cross, especially when she knows the damage that can be caused by lines that are blurred too early. That was then. This is now. Time changes everything? There's nothing young and innocent about Marley now. When she bumps into him many years later, Marley admits the crush he had on her has never gone away. And now that he's a man, he wants to help heal her broken heart. Can the student she knew become the man she loves? Is it even possible to accept love from such an unseemly source? In her signature vignettes, Nicole Bailey-Williams returns with a riveting story of redemption after ruin and the indomitable nature of love.

Free-spirited psychologist Dr. Olivia Bayer suspects she’ll need a miracle to help the four wildly different women in her anger management class. Grace, a single working mother, can barely find a moment’s rest. Jane, a high-profile real estate agent, is struggling in the recession. Kit, in her fifties, has had it with her taunting older brothers. And Leah, a young mother of two, is starting over after ending a troubled relationship. All have reached a crossroads, and Dr. Bayer has an unconventional plan to steer them on the right track. As the class gets taken everywhere from a bowling alley to a shooting range, the women’s Tuesday meetings transform from tense, reluctant gatherings into richly rewarding experiments in female bonding. As Grace, Jane, Kit, and Leah open up—revealing secrets, swapping stories, and recovering long-lost dreams—old wounds begin to heal, new friendships are forged, and miracles manifest in the most surprising ways.

Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. Recovering Identity examines a critical tension in criminalized women's identity work. Through in-depth qualitative and photo-elicitation interviews, Cesraéa Rumpf shows how formerly incarcerated women engaged recovery and faith-based discourses to craft rehabilitated identities, defined in opposition to past identities as "criminal-addicts." While these discourses made it possible for women to carve out spaces of personal protection, growth, and joy, they also promoted individualistic understandings of criminalization and the violence and dehumanization that followed. Honoring criminalized women's stories of personal transformation, Rumpf nevertheless strongly critiques institutions' promotion of narratives that impose lifelong moral judgment while detracting attention from the structural forces of racism, sexism, and poverty that contribute to women's vulnerability to violence.

Book excerpt: Bowling Across America is the story of the author's unique road trip across America with a single-minded purpose: to bowl a round in each of the 50 states. Inspired by his father's unexpected passing, Mike Walsh, a 27 year-old Chicago advertising executive, quits his job to embark on a one-of-a-kind quest. The destination: bowling alleys in each of the 50 states. Though dubbed "career suicide" by colleagues, the endeavor soon touches a nerve among many people--from frustrated middle managers to radio talk show hosts to a woman who merely identifies herself as "Bowling Spice" in an innuendo-laden email. Conversations and adventures with the people he finds in bowling alleys at all hours of the day and night--retired Maine lobstermen, saucy European nannies, recovering addicts, former bowling champions, college students, World War II vets and lingerie saleswomen, to name a few--combine to form a picture of what America looks like while standing in a pair of rented shoes. Hilarious, insightful and at times moving, Bowling Across America is an epic journey that will enthrall readers everywhere.

Book excerpt: From the #1 internationally bestselling author of Recipe for a Perfect Wife comes a must-read book of the season. A 1970s feminist facing the costs of loss and autonomy strives to create a better future for women at her Adirondack camp; meanwhile, an aspiring screenwriter makes a shocking discovery in the present that sets her on a course of rewriting her own story. Rowan is stuck. Her dreams of becoming a screenwriter are stalled, along with her bank account, as she and her fiancé Seth try to make sense of what’s next for them after leaving LA. But when the couple takes a trip to a cabin in the Adirondacks, hoping the change will provide inspiration for Seth’s novel-in-progress, Rowan finds herself drawn into a story greater than her own—that of socialite-turned-feminist-crusader Eddie Calloway, who vanished one day in 1975 and was never found or heard from again. In a handbook left behind in the abandoned ruins of a once great camp, Rowan starts to discover clues to what happened to Eddie. As Rowan delves deeper into the mystery, we meet Eddie herself, a fierce and loving woman whose greatest wish was to host women at her camp and unlock their “wildness.” However, Eddie’s wild ways aren’t welcomed by everyone, and rifts between camp owners threaten her mission. When Rowan gets closer to the truth of Eddie’s disappearance, she realizes that it may hold the key to unlocking her own ambition and future.

Book excerpt: “Pleasure isn’t a dirty word, gorgeous. Not unless you want it to be.” Thanks to an epic playoffs loss and a somewhat regrettable bachelorette party video starring half the team and a can of whipped cream, Buffalo Tempest captain Roscoe LeGrand is on serious PR duty this summer. His assignment? Organize a youth hockey clinic and clean up the team’s tarnished image before the season’s first face-off. But one look at the hot-as-hell hockey mom storming the ice, and Roscoe’s thoughts slide right back into the gutter… Ally Heinz is afraid of everything—with good reason. Three years ago, her husband died in a workplace accident, leaving Ally behind with their only child and a mountain of grief. Now, keeping her child safe is all that matters. Letting the kid play hockey? With all that hard, slippery ice and no onsite medical team? Not happening. If only the sweet, sexy NHL player in charge wasn’t so good at charming the pants off her. Um, literally… Despite Ally’s reservations, it’s not long before her kid’s rocking the rink, and Roscoe’s rocking her world, unlocking pleasures Ally has denied herself for years. But hat tricks in the bedroom will only get him so far. When it comes to winning the hockey mom’s wounded heart, Roscoe’s going to need a lot more than a big, hard stick… BIG HARD STICK is a sexy, steamy, single mom romance and the third book in the Buffalo Tempest hockey romance series. If you like red-hot, dirty-mouthed hockey players, smart and sassy women who aren't afraid to put their men against the boards, and a big, hilarious helping of bromance, then you don't want to miss this lineup!
