Ich habe daher schon seit J ahrzehnten nach Mitarbeitern gesucht, urn neue Tabellen fur die elliptischen Funktionen zu schaffen, die in dieser Hinsicht besser befriedigen. Dabei war mein Leitgedanke, ob es nicht vorteilhafter sei, statt mit dem Legen dreschen Modul emit dem J aco bischen Parameter q zu arbeiten, welcher in den auDergew6hnlich gut konvergierenden Reihen der J acobischen Thetafunktionen auftritt. Dieser Plan kam endlich im Fruhjahr 1951 zur Ausfuhrung, als es mir gelang, Herrn Dr. H. GEBELEIN, einen fruheren Schuler und Mitarbeiter von mir, fur das Problem zu gewinnen. Herr GEBELElN arbeitete zunachst einen Entwicklungs- und Rechnungsplan aus. Durch Forschungsstipendien, die mir die Deutsche Forschungsgemein schaft fur die Jahre 1951 bis 1954 genehmigte, wurde es mir m6glich, daD unter meiner Leitung Herr GEBELEIN zunachst allein und spater unter Zuziehen eines Hilfsassistenten, des Herrn stud. math. BERTHOLD SCHNEIDER, die umfangreichen Berechnungen durchfuhren konnte. Zur Ausrustung des Rechenburos fur diese Arbeit stellte die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft eine zehnstellige Rechenmaschine, Olivetti Divisumma, zur Verfugung, wahrend das Mathematische Institut der Universitat G6ttingen leihweise eine Brunswiga 20 und die zehn stelligen Logarithmentafeln von Peters uberlieD.
