Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fundamentals of Oral English: A Course for Secondary Schools There is a growing demand among our secondary schools for systematic instruction in Oral English to supplement the work in literature and in composition. Appreciation of literary masterpieces and effectiveness in written communication are two great aims of all instruction in the mother tongue. However, the vernacular is primarily a spoken language and happily a realization is awakening that preparation for effective living demands the ability to speak well one's own native tongue; that this ability rests upon habits of body, of voice, and of mind which can be directed and cultivated; and that bad habits of speaking, if they are taken early enough, can be eradicated. In response to this increasing conviction, many secondary schools are attempting, in more or less random ways, to find some method of instruction in oral work; but there are as yet comparatively few attempts systematically to organize courses in Oral English which shall correlate with the general courses in English. Purposes of this Bulletin The purposes of this bulletin are: (1.) To develop proper habits of the body as the basis of effective speaking. This does not refer to gesticulation, a subject which has been omitted entirely. (2.) To eradicate the most obvious faults of vocalization by substituting for them correct habits. (3.) To furnish drill in articulation, enunciation, and pronunciation. (4.) To emphasize, primarily, vocalization, through constant oral practice in class and outside of it. (5) To give practice in the informal discussion of current topics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oral English or the Art of Speaking This book has been written to supply a need. The vocational and civic importance of the ability to speak has been recognized by teachers of English throughout the country, but as yet the meaning of "Oral English" is rather vaguely and variously understood. We are conscious of our goal, but we lack method in our efforts to attain it. It is true that we no longer imagine that the art of speaking can be taught in a half-dozen lessons to the commencement speaker or the interscholastic debater, but we still lack that systematic basis of instruction which has already been furnished for the older subjects and which is necessary to a well-directed activity. This text is the outgrowth of ten years of experiment and research and in its present form is the result of many careful revisions. It is hoped that it may prove to be a useful guide in the oral work of the regular four years English course as well as in the work of the special course in Public Speaking. Suggestions as to ways in which its usefulness may be increased will be cordially accepted. Certain features of the work are original; the chief of these are the general plan of presentation, the handling of the four forms of discourse, and the word-outline method of oral preparation described in Chapters VII and VIII. Book excerpt: Oral English Simplified: A Reliable Guide for Schools and Colleges is a reliable manual and do-it-yourself book on Oral English. It is useful for students in high and tertiary schools, and all lovers of spoken English. It also makes all aspects of Test of Orals as simple as ABC. More importantly, it cleverly explains the fundamentals of English Phonetics and Phonology courses in tertiary institutions. In this book: You will see triphthongs. You will see over 365 sets of homophones. Key /ki:/ and quay /ki:/ are one set of homophones. Fill /fɪl/ and feel /fi:l/ are not homophones. You will see the correct pronunciations of some words that are wrongly pronounced. Your spoken English will be enhanced through the knowledge you will gain from this book. There are so many other things contained in the book which include: 1. The book contains general important advice on spoken English that you would really need to know. 2. Apart from the fact that you will see consonant cluster at the word initial position (onset) up to 3 consonant sounds and at the word final position (coda) up to 4 consonant sounds, you will also see that there are consonant cluster at word medial position up to 5 consonant sounds. That is, you will see words with cluster of 5 consonant sounds at medial position without any vowel sound in between. 3. There are syllabic consonants /n/ and /l/. In the book, you will also see syllabic consonants /m/, /r/, and /ŋ/. 4. The discussion on emphatic stress is excellent. Four (4) formulas/rules of emphatic stress are revealed in the book. 5. Impressive discussion on inflectional endings is contained in the book. 6. Is it on word stress? The treatment of the rules that guide word stress is exceptional. When a word that contains more than one syllable is pronounced, one of its syllables must be pronounced with extra force. The rules that guide word stress are in this book. 7. In the book, you will discover rules or formulas for pronouncing many sounds. For instance, you will see why the 's' in 'mansion' and the 's' in 'erosion' do not have the same sound. 8. All the things mentioned above and many more are in the book. You can afford to buy this book. Get it now for yourself and/or your children and/or your loved ones.
