Book Synopsis Fundamentals of III-V Semiconductor MOSFETs by : Serge Oktyabrsky
Download or read book Fundamentals of III-V Semiconductor MOSFETs written by Serge Oktyabrsky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-16 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of III-V Semiconductor MOSFETs presents the fundamentals and current status of research of compound semiconductor metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) that are envisioned as a future replacement of silicon in digital circuits. The material covered begins with a review of specific properties of III-V semiconductors and available technologies making them attractive to MOSFET technology, such as band-engineered heterostructures, effect of strain, nanoscale control during epitaxial growth. Due to the lack of thermodynamically stable native oxides on III-V's (such as SiO2 on Si), high-k oxides are the natural choice of dielectrics for III-V MOSFETs. The key challenge of the III-V MOSFET technology is a high-quality, thermodynamically stable gate dielectric that passivates the interface states, similar to SiO2 on Si. Several chapters give a detailed description of materials science and electronic behavior of various dielectrics and related interfaces, as well as physics of fabricated devices and MOSFET fabrication technologies. Topics also include recent progress and understanding of various materials systems; specific issues for electrical measurement of gate stacks and FETs with low and wide bandgap channels and high interface trap density; possible paths of integration of different semiconductor materials on Si platform.

Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Solid State Electronics by : Chih-Tang Sah
Download or read book Fundamentals of Solid State Electronics written by Chih-Tang Sah and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 1991-10-30 with total page 1040 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is perhaps the most comprehensive undergraduate textbook on the fundamental aspects of solid state electronics. It presents basic and state-of-the-art topics on materials physics, device physics, and basic circuit building blocks not covered by existing textbooks on the subject. Each topic is introduced with a historical background and motivations of device invention and circuit evolution. Fundamental physics is rigorously discussed with minimum need of tedious algebra and advanced mathematics. Another special feature is a systematic classification of fundamental mechanisms not found even in advanced texts. It bridges the gap between solid state device physics covered here with what students have learnt in their first two years of study. Used very successfully in a one-semester introductory core course for electrical and other engineering, materials science and physics junior students, the second part of each chapter is also used in an advanced undergraduate course on solid state devices. The inclusion of previously unavailable analyses of the basic transistor digital circuit building blocks and cells makes this an excellent reference for engineers to look up fundamental concepts and data, design formulae, and latest devices such as the GeSi heterostructure bipolar transistors. This book is also available as a set with Fundamentals of Solid-State Electronics — Study Guide and Fundamentals of Solid-State Electronics — Solution Manual.
Book Synopsis Materials Fundamentals of Gate Dielectrics by : Alexander A. Demkov
Download or read book Materials Fundamentals of Gate Dielectrics written by Alexander A. Demkov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-05-24 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents materials fundamentals of novel gate dielectrics that are being introduced into semiconductor manufacturing to ensure the continuous scalling of the CMOS devices. This is a very fast evolving field of research so we choose to focus on the basic understanding of the structure, thermodunamics, and electronic properties of these materials that determine their performance in device applications. Most of these materials are transition metal oxides. Ironically, the d-orbitals responsible for the high dielectric constant cause sever integration difficulties thus intrinsically limiting high-k dielectrics. Though new in the electronics industry many of these materials are wel known in the field of ceramics, and we describe this unique connection. The complexity of the structure-property relations in TM oxides makes the use of the state of the art first-principles calculations necessary. Several chapters give a detailed description of the modern theory of polarization, and heterojunction band discontinuity within the framework of the density functional theory. Experimental methods include oxide melt solution calorimetry and differential scanning calorimetry, Raman scattering and other optical characterization techniques, transmission electron microscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Many of the problems encounterd in the world of CMOS are also relvant for other semiconductors such as GaAs. A comprehensive review of recent developments in this field is thus also given. The book should be of interest to those actively engaged in the gate dielectric research, and to graduate students in Materials Science, Materials Physics, Materials Chemistry, and Electrical Engineering.

Book Synopsis Thermoelectric Materials 2003: Volume 793 by : G. S. Nolas
Download or read book Thermoelectric Materials 2003: Volume 793 written by G. S. Nolas and published by . This book was released on 2004-03-17 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The measure of a thermoelectric material is given by the material's figure of merit. For over three decades the best thermoelectric materials had a ZT = 1. Recently, however, there are reports of new methods of materials synthesis that result in improvements beyond this performance. In addition, rapid characterization, as well as faster theoretical modeling of thermoelectric materials, has resulted in a more rapid evaluation of new materials. This book offers a look at these results and provides a benchmark for the current state in the field of thermoelectric materials research and development. The focus is on new and innovative directions that will lead to the next generation thermoelectric materials for small-scale refrigeration and power generation applications. The book emphasizes the multidisciplinary nature of the research needed to advance the science and technology of the field. Both theoretical and experimental studies are featured. Topics include: low-dimensional systems and nanocomposites; devices; oxides; skutterudites; complex bulk materials and measurements; novel approaches; and thermoelectric materials and technology.
Book Synopsis Quasicrystals 2003: Volume 805 by : E. Belin-Ferre
Download or read book Quasicrystals 2003: Volume 805 written by E. Belin-Ferre and published by Materials Research Society. This book was released on 2004-03-18 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty years after the discovery of a quasicrystalline compound, the field of quasicrystals still raises interest and is continuously evolving. Quasicrystals display properties different from conventional crystals with small unit cells and present interesting potential for industrial purposes. This book offers an updated look into the field of quasicrystalline research. For example, a report on electrodeposited Al-Cu-Fe quasicrystals shows great promise for industry. It is also demonstrated that when Al-Cu-Fe quasicrystals are used as catalysts, in particular at high temperatures, such quasicrystals outperform conventional industrial catalysts. A new class of quasicrystal, based on a novel type of local order differing from previously observed Mackay- and Bergman-type quasicrystals, is featured. A detailed description of layer-by-layer growth of a Cu film on a quasicrystalline surface is also provided. Additional topics include: synthesis and structure; transport properties; electronic properties; mechanical properties; quasicrystals from metallic glasses; surfaces and coatings; and applications and hydrogen storage.
