Book excerpt: Ignition is associated with the thermal energy input into the system occurring at a rate faster than thermal energy is being lost to the surroundings. The solution of an idealized model for ignition at a plane metal surface characterizes the material in terms of the property thermal inertia, kpc. The thermal inertia for six metals Al, Cu, Fe, Mg, Ni and Ti, at their ignition temperatures is compared to the relative burn resistance of the metals in terms of BRmp, BRbp threshold pressure, resistance to ignition by particle impact and frictional heating ignition, pv. Thermal inertia is in agreement and appears to be suitable property for characterizing metals ignition. In addition, considerations for relaxing the assumptions associated with the idealized model are described and thermal inertia is still a valid characterization for the material.

Book excerpt: Promoted ignition-combustion is a term which has been used to describe a situation where a substance with poor oxygen compatibility ignites and supports the combustion of a more resistant material. Previous papers on the subject in recent years have reported on the investigation of this phenomenon as it relates to aluminum, carbon steel, stainless steels and a number of engineering alloys.

Book excerpt: The different principles underlying ignition, flame spread and mass burning of condensed phase materials are described fundamentally and in detail. Brief analytical developments of the parameters which affect these various aspects of material flammabillty are presented and the major results are interpreted in light of enriched oxygen conditions and metal and polymer combustibility. The limitations of ASTM LOI (Limiting Oxygen Index) and heat release tests are discussed in light of the fundamentals developed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work reported addresses metal ignition from the possible rubbing of oxygen pressurized hydrostatic bearings and turbine blade tips operating in a high-pressure oxygen environment. Friction heating tests in oxygen at pressures of 1 to 300 atm were conducted at surface speeds of 10 to 33 m/s. Materials selections were based on their burn factor (heat of combustion/thermal diffusivity). Test results presented include the rubbing of like material pairs spanning a wide range of burn factors and dissimilar metal pairs having significantly different burn factors. The test results indicated that the burn factor can provide a useful guide for selecting metals for use in oxygen where rubbing can occur. The burn factor is suitable for rank ordering most, but not all, materials in their resistance to ignition. Most materials became more difficult to ignite under the high-speed rubbing test conditions when the oxygen pressure increased from 60 to 300 atm. However once they ignited, the burning was more extensive. A mechanism that explains these observations and thermal instabilities as evidenced by self-induced heating and cooling cycles under linearly increasing rubbing loads is postulated. It is supported by experimental data.

Book excerpt: A straightforward treatment describing the oxidation processes of metals and alloys at elevated temperatures. This 2006 second edition retains the fundamental theory but incorporates advances made in understanding degradation phenomena. The first half provides an authoritative introduction to the basic principles, covering thermodynamics and mechanisms of high temperature corrosion of metals and alloys. The latter half extends the discussion to oxidation processes in complex systems, from reactions in mixed environments to protective techniques, including coatings and atmosphere control. The authors provide a logical and expert treatment of the subject, producing a revised edition that will be a comprehensive guide to material scientists and engineers requiring an understanding of this elementary process.
