From this reading (if slightly emphasized) the student will learn first that each group of words bears a slight stress on the last syllable (or the one before if the word ends in a mute and second, that there is a slight raising of the voice on the last syllable before the minor pauses. The word - group is determined by the sense and by the breathing and will difl'er slightly according to taste and desired emphasis. The following paragraph from les Trois Mousquetaires illustrates the above points, the final syllable of the word group being italicized.
