Book excerpt: The experiments all involved rapid heating of a magnetically confined collisionless plasma column with a high-current relativistic electron beam (RE B). An impontant feature, which differentiates these experiments from sorne others, is that the fully ionized plasma column was injected through a 5-cm orifice along magnetic lines into a hard vacuum in a 40-cm-diameter chamber, eliminating the effects of walls and neutral gas around the column. Thus the electron beam did not create plasma, but only- interacted with the already-existing, finite column. Three distinct plasma conditions were usedi (a) injected plasma having a temperature of tens of electron volts and density between 1013 and 6 x 10/ sup 13/ cm/s up -3/; (b) injected plasma heated to several keV by turbulent heating; and (c) highly turbulent plasma (electrostatic instabilities generated during turbulent heating). The strongest REB interaction was with plasma condition (c). Plasma heating to as much as 15 keV per electron-ion pair was achieved. The ion energy distribution was enhanced at high energies, with the ions containing 1/3 to 1/4 of the total plasma energy. The plasma was stable after heating. (auth).

Book excerpt: For electron beams, a theory of the dynamics of driven Langmuir wave turbulence was developed. In low density beams, Langmuir wave evolution was found to be governed by nonlinear index of refraction effects, and associated self-focusing, rather than by wave reaction back on the beam. In laser-plasma interactions, the nonlinear theoretical work was verified experimentally in collaboration with Dr. N. Peacock of Culham Laboratories. In an experiment on nonlinear interactions of a carbon dioxide laser with a dense plasma focus device, almost 100 percent anomalous absorption of the radiation was observed along with intense Langmuir turbulence. The results were published in Physical Review Letters. A classical theory of the Raman-induced Kerr effect was developed. A computer code was developed to help determine plasma temperatures, radiation, impurity distributions, and overall plasma evolution in Z-pinch plasmas. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dense (approx. 1017 cm−3) plasma has been heated via the relativistic two-stream instability using a 3 MeV, intense (5 x 105 A/cm2) electron beam. Evidence for heating has been obtained with diamagnetic loops, thin-foil witness plates, and a 2-channel, broad-band soft x-ray detector. Measurements of energy loss from the beam using calorimetry techniques have been attempted. The measured strong dependence of heating on beam transverse temperature and the very short interaction length (4 cm) are consistent with beam-plasma coupling due to the relativistic electron-electron two-stream instability. Soft x-ray measurements made100 ns after the beam pulse are consistent with a plasma temperature
