Book Synopsis Aggression in Children and Youth by : R.M. Kaplan
Download or read book Aggression in Children and Youth written by R.M. Kaplan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human aggression is a fascinating research topic, but it is of much more than academic importance. To a large extent, the quality of life and perhaps even world survival depend on an adequate understanding of human aggression. Family vi o lence (child battering and spouse abuse), rape, assault, armed robbery, murder, terrorism, and war are all instances of various types of aggression. The ability to regulate and control such acts could have a crucial contribution to the improvement of the quality of life. Aggressive acts in children and youth need to be under stood for three major reasons. First, most Western cultures are witnessing an increasing involvement in violence by youths. Second, the aggressive dispositions formed early in life may set the tone for or contribute to adult aggression. Third, the quality of childhood and the formation of personal ity are influenced by both the expression and inhibition of aggression. The regulation and control of aggression in children and youth can have a profound effect on the institu tions of the family and the educational system as well as on society at large. Most societies are dedicated to maintain ing harmony and to providing nonviolent solutions to human problems and social conflict. A substantial amount of knowledge has accumulated about aggression and its regulation from empirical research, theory, and clinical sources. Because of the social importance of aggression, the study of human aggression in children and youth has become a popular area for scientific research.
Book Synopsis The Social Psychology of the Child with Epilepsy by : Christopher Bagley
Download or read book The Social Psychology of the Child with Epilepsy written by Christopher Bagley and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2015-06-19 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When this title was first published in 1971, there were about 300, 000 people with epilepsy in England and Wales. Nearly one-third of them were children. This book is an integrated review of how epileptic children behaved, and of how they were regarded by parents, teachers and peers at the time. Written by a sociologist with a training in psychology, human biology and education, the book draws on several disciplines – sociology, psychology, biology – in seeking to understand the complex determinants of deviant behaviour in children with epilepsy. The author considers in detail the lives of 118 epileptic children, bringing together and analysing a wide range of measurements of behaviour, social relations and abnormalities of brain function. He discusses how the children fare in school, and how epilepsy affects both the teacher’s perception of the child and the child’s scholastic performance. The dearth of medical centres which could diagnose and treat epilepsy at the time is examined, and hospital use according to parents’ social class is analysed. The author looks at the role of parents of epileptic children and shows that their attitude to epilepsy is of major importance for the child’s adjustment. The prejudice to which epileptic children and adolescents were subjected by the world at large is chronicled in detail. Finally the author considers how his empirical material makes a contribution to the theoretical problem of integrating sociology, psychology and biology into a single discipline concerned with the explanation of human social behaviour.
Book Synopsis The Structuring of Experience by : I. Uzgiris
Download or read book The Structuring of Experience written by I. Uzgiris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles which make up this book were all expressly written to honor a remarkable man and a remarkable psychologist, Joseph McVicker Hunt, on the occasion of his 70th birthday. The contributors to this volume, with the exception of Hunt's teacher, J. P. Guilford, are students and colleagues of Hunt's whose intellectual and professional paths have crossed his in some significant way. In terms of content, the contributions collectively range across many of the conventional boundaries that demarcate the territories into which psy chological subject-matter has been divided. In so doing, they remain faithful to the man they honor, for whom such boundaries have had, at best, only provisional reality. Yet as the introductory chapter attempts to make clear, there is a unifying theme that lies behind the apparent diversity of Hunt's work. While we wished to mark Hunt's specific contributions to the diverse areas represented in this book, we also hoped to capture the unity of viewpoint that ties them together.
Book Synopsis Psychopathy as Unified Theory of Crime by : Matt DeLisi
Download or read book Psychopathy as Unified Theory of Crime written by Matt DeLisi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book applies the psychopathy concept toward the understanding of crime. Drawing on hundreds of studies and his own clinical, research, and practitioner experience working with the most antisocial and violent offenders, the author demonstrates that psychopathy can explain all forms of crime across the life course, and also examines the biosocial foundations of the disorder. With an abundance of case studies and historical references, written in a distinctive writing style, the book is equally fascinating to the academic scholar and the true crime buff alike.
