Book excerpt: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is the institution designed to support global trade and economic growth by helping to maintain stability in the international financial system. Originally created to finance short-term balance of payments deficits during the Bretton Woods Era of gold/dollar fixed exchange rates (1944--1971), in the current world where flexible exchange rates dominate in the industrial economics, it has focused on developing countries where ever larger financial crises have erupted. The book provides a basic understanding of its mission and operations, and how they may have evolved. A comprehensive bibliography is included with easy access by subject, author and title indexes.

Book Synopsis Should the IMF Become More Adaptive? by : Ian D. Clark
Download or read book Should the IMF Become More Adaptive? written by Ian D. Clark and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1996-02 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper addresses the question: Should the International Monetary Fund be making an even greater effort to adapt its objectives, priorities, rules, instruments, procedures, and resources to take account of changes in the global economic environment and in the needs of its members? It reviews the changes in the economic and geopolitical environment most relevant to the Fund and the ways the institution has adapted to date. It identifies the general factors that tend to inhibit adaptation in international institutions, and some of the specific factors that can facilitate adaptation in the case of the Fund. It concludes that the Fund should, indeed, be making even greater efforts to adapt, but that efforts in this regard should take account of the identified factors.
