Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The current study was designed to compare the muscle activity levels of three lower body sites during a traditional exercise (hexagonal bar dead lift) and a non-traditional exercise (tire flip). The participants were 13 female athletes between the ages of 18 and 24 years old with at least 1 year of strength training experience. Electromyography (EMG) was used to analyze the activity of the muscles. During the first visit, participants completed a 6 repetition maximum test (6 RM) for hexagonal bar dead lift and were introduced to tire flipping after a 10 min break. During the second visit, surface electrodes were placed on the biceps femoris (BF), the rectus femoris (RF), and the gluteus maximus (GM). Participants then completed either the dead lift at 6 RM weight for 3 repetitions or completed 3 repetitions of tire flip. The participant rested for 5 min and then completed the additional exercise. A repeated measures t-test was used to compare the average EMG activity of each muscle group during the hexagonal bar dead lift and the tire flip. No significant differences (p > .05) were found between dead lifting and tire flipping in the BF, RF, and GM activation. Proper overload during traditional and nontraditional exercises can led to stronger lower body musculature in female athletes and improve athletic performance.

Book excerpt: Research has shown that collegiate female athletes are oftentimes faced with negotiating meanings of their femininity and their athleticism. Athleticism has traditionally been equated with masculinity, and to be a collegiate athlete requires certain levels of skill, experience, and athletic ability. Therefore, female collegiate athletes are conflicted with managing their identities in order to avoid accusations of their sexuality, which often results in being labeled as deviant. A primary indicator of athleticism is muscularity, which is also considered a masculine trait. In order to stay within gender boundaries, female athletes may go above and beyond to emphasize their femininity, or they may hold back on performance and training to avoid a muscular physique. An area of collegiate athletics that has become increasingly important is the strength and conditioning coach and weight room. These coaches are responsible for training athletes in power and speed development to enhance sport performance and prevent injury. Research has shown, however, that the weight room and activity of lifting weights has not been deemed socially appropriate for women. The purpose of this study was to understand first, how do Division-I female athletes negotiate their femininity and muscularity within the strength and conditioning environment? Second, is there a difference in femininity and muscularity negotiations and management between underclassmen female collegiate athletes and upperclassmen female collegiate athletes? Finally, what aspects of the weight room influence the negotiations of femininity and muscularity among female collegiate athletes? To gain a rich understanding of how female athletes negotiate their femininity with muscularity in the strength and conditioning environment, a qualitative methodology was used. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with 14 athletes, from 7 different sports, at a Midwestern Division-I university. Using a critical feminist interactionist theoretical framework, this study found that female collegiate athletes negotiate their meanings of muscularity and femininity in the strength and conditioning environment. Athletes viewed it necessary to place boundaries on their muscularity in regards to size, preferring the `toned' physique. All athletes acknowledged a positive impact on their sport performance, yet some athletes admitted to holding back during strength and conditioning sessions. Others believed that the weight lifting program was not threatening to their muscularity, but explained they would hold back if it did have a `bulking' effect. Finally, some athletes performed additional cardiovascular training to reduce body size. Additional findings suggest that the weight room environment is influential for the female athletes. The public weight room was described as a gendered space that was intimidating. In contrast, the collegiate weight room was a place that was welcoming to the female athletes. The strength and conditioning coach played an important role to the environment and the female athletes. Concluding results show that inconsistent with previous research, there were no consistent findings in attitude or behavior differences between underclassmen and upperclassmen athletes.

The current investigation was designed to determine the relationship between the hamstrings to quadriceps (H/Q)strength ratio and endurance exercise performance in trained female runners as measured by V02peak, running economy, lactatethreshold, and 10 K running time. Ten female runners (V02peak > 53 mL-1/kg-1/min) completed three exercise testing sessionsconsisting of a Modified McConnell V02peak test, isokinetic lower extremity strength test, and 10 K time trial. Blood lactate wasmeasured through capillary blood from the tip of the finger pre exercise, at every 3 min during exercise, and immediately post exerciseduring the V02peak test to determine lactate threshold. All V02peak tests were videotaped and stride rate and stride length weredetermined at 3.13 m/s, 3.58 m/s, and 4.02 m/s. No significant correlations were observed between the H/Q strength ratio at 60 0 /sand 180 0 /s and any of the performance variables. No significant correlations existed between the H/Q strength ratio at 60 0 /s and180 0 /s and stride rate and stride length at any speed. The training adaptations of endurance running could result in an increased H/Qstrength ratio. At high levels of competition, the H/Q strength ratio may not be the main determinant of performance. Since therelationship between the H/Q strength ratio and endurance running performance remains inconclusive, future research is warranted toinvestigate the functional H/Q strength ratio and performance during different running distances.

Book excerpt: Abstract: BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Due to the high level of competition and large amount of time involved for college competition, both men and women gymnasts are at considerable risk for injury. Multiple methods to assess strength and function (including manual muscle, CYBEX isokinetic, and functional tests) are commonly used for determining appropriate time for return to competition level after injury. The purpose of this longitudinal study was to examine relationships between various strength and functional test outcomes and injury incidence and severity as noted by time loss from full participation among college-level men and women gymnasts. SUBJECTS: Fifteen Division III gymnastic team members (6 male and 9 female), who competed during the Spring 1998 season, participated in this study. The average subject was 19.2 years old, and had competed in gymnastics 4.2 months in the past year at the time of initial data collection. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Subjects completed a questionnaire containing demographic, medical, and athletic activity history on the initial day of testing. Subjects were tested in a sequence of assessments starting with manual muscle, cocontraction, vertical leap, and ending with CYBEX isokinetic testing. The protocol stated that following an injury and subsequent completion of guidelines set by the athletic training department for return to practice and competition at pre-injury level, the testing sequence was repeated on the day before return to prior activity level. Injury was operationally defined as any lower extremity problem which forces an athlete to miss a minimum of one practice or competition (24 hours). ANALYSES: Descriptive statistical analyses were used to obtain a profile of sample characteristics. Pearson correlations were utilized to assess relationships between ratio and interval level variables, and point biserial correlations were utilized for ordinal and nominal level variables. A t-test was performed to test gender differences as they relate to perception of readiness to compete. RESULTS: No injuries occurred during the data collection period. A significant inverse correlation (r= -0.59) was found between cocontraction results and vertical jump measurements, such that subjects who completed the cocontration test in less time had higher vertical jump scores. Vertical jump results and all CYBEX testing velocities had a significant correlation (ranging from r= 0.65 to 0.83). A significant correlation (ranging from r= -0.54 to -0.68) was observed between cocontraction results and all CYBEX testing velocities with the exception of 60â/second for the left lower extremity. CONCLUSIONS: High correlations were found between functional testing and CYBEX isokinetic testing, implying that an overlap exists in the parameters being tested. The authors believe that using cocontraction testing, in addition to another test, will provide a more complete profile. RELEVANCE: The results of this study will assist sports medicine practitioners to determine the best test or combination of tests to determine when an injured gymnast should return to prior level of activity.
