Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reader of this book will be taken on a fascinating journey featuring Bill and Barbara West from their high school days in the 1950s to their eventual historic destiny with the Robinson River Plantation in Point Blank Texas. Carved out of the wilderness 160 years ago, the Robinson family from Alabama built and thrived on this land for 120 years and then sold it to the West family in 1978. Destiny arrived when the West family began to discover a multitude of incredible artifacts beneath the plantation earth, and began to uncover the rich historic legacy of the Robinson family. On this beautiful plantation along the Trinity River in East Texas, the Robinsons would experience great happiness and tragic sorrow, as did the West family with the loss of Barbara, only recently, to cancer. The book delivers eye-witness accounts of life changing events in the Robinson family, and lists many of the artifacts found, with follow-up research done by the author. From the days of General Sam Houston dancing in the foyer of the Victorian house, to the sounds of many children laughing and playing, to the designation of the plantation as a State Archeological Landmark, the reader will be captivated by this account of early Texas history.

Book excerpt: West River is a tale of the last pioneers on America's western frontier and the lessons they learned. Growing up on his father's Badlands homestead, Bill Barton chases his boyhood dream of one day staking his own homestead claim in the Black Hills. Bill learns that dreams, no matter how hard a man may struggle to make them come true, can turn to dust before his very eyes. Losing everything, Bill comes to accept that a man needs to take life as it comes and make of it what he can. Born into hard times, Bill's daughter Velda grows up learning how to make do and do without. Never backing down, Velda fights for her place in the world, while the Barton family struggles with the harsh realities of poverty amidst the daunting challenges of draught and depression. The sudden outbreak of world war transforms the Barton family and their fortunes. With a victorious America emerging as the leader of a new world order, the Barton family is left to ponder the deeper meaning of America's newfound prosperity, its outsized role in the world, and whether future generations will be willing to stay the course and pay the price.

Willis' insatiable appetite for adventure keeps every trip interesting, down craggy dirt roads miles from anywhere. The author catches over 25 species and subspecies, including Apache & gila trout, arctic char, blueback trout, brooks, browns (landlocked and sea-run), bulls, aurora trout, Dollies, lakers, splake, steelhead, goldens, cutthroat (all subspecies), cuttbows, tigers, grayling, sunapee (they do exist), redband, whitefish and more. Every corner of North America is fished, from Iceland (part of it is considered North America) to Alaska and all fishy spots in between. Willis' personal writing style seeks to bring readers with him on each journey, waiting out cattle drives, changing flat tires, hooking surprise rod-bending fish, and up sheer mountainsides continent-wide. Detailed trip information is included at the end of each chapter to help you plan your trip. Book excerpt: As Major Robert Rogers's rangers make their way along the hills by the Lake Memphramagog, young Tom Evans, his uncle, Captain John Evans, and Mohawk Indian guide Toe-Lee-Ma are aware that danger and treachery lay ahead. Fort Ticonderoga had been laced with explosives by the French and exploded into a great fiery inferno, while a spy lurked in the forest by nearby cabins with his friend and ally, the fierce Abenaki Indian Satanis. Now, somewhere in this cold, dark, snowy forest, Tom and his Uncle John must find the young Sally Williams, alive or dead, and take their vengeance on Satanis and his counterpart, a man by the name of Messieur Bouchet. But first they have to survive the wilderness trek hundreds of miles up country to the mighty fortress of Quebec-to save their homeland or die. It is a long, desperate journey filled with danger in freezing temperatures, through Abenaki territory, but go they must, to fulfill The Border Covenant. The Great French General the Marquis de Montcalm-Gorzon thought it couldn't be done, and he was counting on it for the sake of all of New France.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Wide Rivers Crossed, Ellen Wohl tells the stories of two rivers—the South Platte on the western plains and the Illinois on the eastern—to represent the environmental history and historical transformation of major rivers across the American prairie. Wohl begins with the rivers’ natural histories, including their geologic history, physical characteristics, ecological communities, and earliest human impacts, and follows a downstream and historical progression from the use of the rivers’ resources by European immigrants through increasing population density of the twentieth century to the present day. During the past two centuries, these rivers changed dramatically, mostly due to human interaction. Crops replaced native vegetation; excess snowmelt and rainfall carried fertilizers and pesticides into streams; and levees, dams, and drainage altered distribution. These changes cascaded through networks, starting in small headwater tributaries, and reduced the ability of rivers to supply the clean water, fertile soil, and natural habitats they had provided for centuries. Understanding how these rivers, and rivers in general, function and how these functions have been altered over time will allow us to find innovative approaches to restoring river ecosystems. The environmental changes in the South Platte and the Illinois reflect the relentless efforts by humans to control the distribution of water: to enhance surface water in the arid western prairie and to limit the spread of floods and drain the wetlands along the rivers in the water-abundant east. Wide Rivers Crossed looks at these historical changes and discusses opportunities for much-needed protection and restoration for the future.
