Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One vehicle crash test was conducted on a temporary precast concrete barrier. The test conditions and parameters were determined by an actual accident which resulted in a lawsuit against the State of California. The purpose of this test was to replicate the accident in defense of the lawsuit and provide research in large angle vehicle impacts with this type of barrier. The test involved a 1975 Toyota Celica (1330 kg) impacting a temporary precast concrete barrier placed in a simulated freeway median at 74 deg and 81.2 km/h.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Three full-scale vehicle crash tests were conducted according to the MASH Test Level 4 (TL-4) safety performance criteria on a restorable and reusable energy-absorbing roadside/median barrier, designated the RESTORE barrier. The system utilized for test nos. SFH-1 through SFH-3 was 240 ft (73.2 m) long with a nominal height of 38 5/8 in. (981 mm). The barrier consisted of an upper steel tube rail attached to top of the 20-ft (6.1-m) long x 22 1/4-in. (565-mm) wide precast concrete beams connected with wedge-shaped joints and supported by 11 5/8-in. (295-mm) tall rubber posts and steel skids" (page i).

Download or read book Guardrail and Median Barrier Crashworthiness written by Malcolm H. Ray and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to state department of transportation (DOT) roadway design, traffic, structural, maintenance, and research engineers and others concerned with highway safety issues. This synthesis describes the current state of the practice for the use of guardrails and median barriers and their crashworthiness. It includes information about the crashworthiness and typical applications of the most common, permanently installed, nonproprietary guardrail and median barrier systems used in the United States today. A significant amount of detail is included in the text to aid the design, selection, and locating processes for safe and effective guardrails and median barriers. The report presents data obtained from a review of the literature and a survey of state DOTs. The synthesis presents a description of the typical longitudinal barriers in use today, including drawings, the extent of their use, and the most recent testing on each guardrail and barrier system, with particular emphasis on NCHRP Report 230 and 350 requirements. In addition, it discusses the maintenance issues, cost constraints, and common problems with each type of barrier. The synthesis only discusses the crashworthiness of guardrails and median barriers; their transitions and terminals are not discussed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.
