Das Systemische Modell von Leiten entwickelte sich aus unterschiedlichen systemischen Leitungsmodellen. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Eigenart der Führungsperson, wie die Ausstrahlung, die Beziehungsfähigkeit oder die wichtigsten Methoden. Die drei Aufgabenbereiche der Leitungsperson sind Leadership, Managen und Coachen, wobei die Wirkungen nach innen und außen wahrgenommen werden sollten. Das Zusammenspiel der drei Aufgabenbereiche ist ein Sowohl-als-auch. Leadership bedeutet vorangehen, Ziele und Visionen entwickeln, Kommunikationsstrukturen schaffen, Entscheidungen treffen, Entwicklungen eröffnen. Managen heißt Prozesse und Abläufe organisieren, Ressourcen bereitstellen, gestalten, Qualität sichern, Konflikte begleiten, Unterschiede und Komplexität managen. Der dritte Aufgabenbereich der Führungspersönlichkeit ist das Coachen. Die Leitungsperson begleitet, fördert, bestärkt und berät die Mitarbeiter und Mitarbeiterinnen bei der eigenen Lösungsfindung. Die Führungsperson beschäftigt sich mit der Personalentwicklung und führt Mitarbeitergespräche.

Die Untersuchung des Führungsverhaltens legt großen Wert auf die Wahl des Führungsstils. Viele Studien zeigen zudem, dass sich ein demokratischerer Führungsstil meist positiv auf das innere Verhalten der Mitarbeiter auswirkt. Daher ist es für viele Unternehmen von Vorteil, den Zusammenhang zwischen Führung und Motivation aus ökonomischer Sicht zu verstehen und auf welchen Führungsstil die Mitarbeiter besonders achten. Sind die Mitarbeiter zufrieden, leisten sie gute Leistungen und produzieren Qualitätsprodukte, wodurch Ausschussquoten und Produktionsfehler minimiert werden. Das wiederum führt dazu, dass die Kunden zufriedener sind, weil es keine Reklamationen gibt, was letztendlich zu einer langfristigen Kundenbindung führt. Kundenorientierung war bisher das Hauptziel des Unternehmens, um zufriedene und treue Kunden zu gewinnen. Doch diese Ziele können nur von den eigenen Mitarbeitern erreicht werden. Mitarbeiter prägen das Unternehmen und entscheiden letztlich über Erfolg oder Misserfolg. Unter Berücksichtigung dieser Faktoren liegt es auf der Hand, dass die Mitarbeitermotivation ein wesentlicher Faktor im strategischen Wettbewerb ist. Aus diesem Grund ist es für Führungskräfte, die ein Unternehmen erfolgreich führen wollen, sehr wünschenswert, sich auf die Möglichkeiten und Werkzeuge zu konzentrieren, die sich positiv auf die Mitarbeitermotivation auswirken.

The techniques employed in such analysis first took on a recognizably modern form in the 1970s, but their roots go back to the earliest days of motion picture technology in the late nineteenth century. This scientific migration led to the cross-pollination of communication studies in America, an outcome visible in the leading project in interaction research of the mid-twentieth century, the Natural History of an Interview. The following two chapters examine this project in its historical context. The volume closes with a critical edition of a treasure from the archives: the transcript of a speech delivered by Ray Birdwhistell, a key participant in the Natural History of an Interview project and founder of kinesics.
