Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer, course: International Strategic Leadership, language: English, abstract: In order to survive in the global competition companies have to establish a competitive advantage concerning quality, cost structure and productivity. Therefore, the reasons for the increasing internationalization are, for example, long-term cost advantages, limited availability of raw materials or skills shortages (Dülfer, Jöstingmeier 2008). A high level of motivation leads to job satisfaction, goal-oriented behavior and thereby to better results (Kreitner, Kinicki 2013; Kleinbeck, Kleinbeck 2009). It is the task of a leader to motivate the workers at the best. Particularly with regard to the increasing internationalization and more complex global interdependence this task is getting more arduous. In addition, the personal traits of a leader influence the leadership style in a favorable or obstructive way. Considering the above named difficulties the following thesis presumes a possible linkage between leadership and motivation: The stereotypical use of motivation theories does not maintain the successful motivation of employees in an intercultural context. The key to efficient leader-ship is the consideration of individual needs of employees. In order to verify or disprove the thesis this paper begins by determining the conceptual background of the terms leadership and motivation and taking a closer look at selected motivation theories. With the presentation of the case of Steve Jobs and Tim Cook, the former and the current leader of Apple Inc., the impact of personal traits on leadership and motivation is taken into consideration additionally.

Book excerpt: Move away from the motivation mindset CEOs and team leaders from Fortune 500 companies and venture-backed start-ups often complain that they have trouble keeping their teams motivated. But what if it's actually not the job of the leaders to motivate their teams? What if team members were responsible for motivating themselves and for bringing their own professional, positive, helpful, best selves to work each day? What might change in companies if teams lived up to this expectation? In The Motivation Trap, John Hittler draws on the wisdom he has acquired from years of coaching individuals, teams, and organizations and proposes a more effective way to lead. He unwraps the energetic underpinnings of motivation, explains why it holds big limitations, and points out where and when to employ it as an effective tool in coaching management teams. He walks readers through additional tools and suggests how and when to use them to create high-achieving teams who find enjoyment in their work and are ready to take initiative and work more autonomously. His simple, easy-to-use tools will bring team members together so they can accomplish highly leveraged success. With the wisdom he provides in The Motivation Trap, Hittler helps leaders produce great results for their team members, themselves, and their organizations.

However ambiguous and preposterous to some, these perceptions are a reality to those who live them. So rather than dwell on the negatives and those things that separate and divide us, this book (as the first of a three-part series) analyzes the challenges faced and then offers positive, inclusive solutions. Time has shown that a properly led team with effective leadership is much stronger than an individual. Each one reaches at least one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leadership is motivation and motivation is leadership, say the authors of this important and unique study. The two elements are inseparable, but until now no one has actually conceptualized motivation in a useful way to demonstrate and analyze the connection between it and leadership. The key for leaders is dealing with the emotions that underlie and activate motivation. Maddock and Fulton provide a highly successful, proven, and replicable approach not only to motivate people, but also to train them to lead others. The authors develop an 11 level structure of human motivation that defines and describes motivation in simple, graphic, all-inclusive language. They then show how leaders can use this motivational hierarchy to solve complex problems in the workplace. The result is a blueprint to help executives in all types of organizations manage more effectively, and as they do so, to motivate and truly lead the people who depend on them for guidance and direction. Maddock and Fulton offer several scenarios to show how their ideas work in practice. In the vertical fix they demonstrate how motives that get out of synch with each other can be re-aligned, eliminating the chaos that would otherwise occur. In the lateral fix they show how a person who may be functioning at the extreme edge of motivation can be moved back toward the center, a place where the person's effect on others is most and best felt. Well documented throughout, their book will be important reading for training and development professionals, specialists in organizational behavior, and executives at all levels in public and private sectors.

In the current context of significant changes in thinking, policy, and expectations, these changes require extension agents to respond to challenges in developing leadership skills to support and encourage changes at farm and household levels. The book has identified the background, personal, and environmental factors influencing achievement motivation in the leadership role of extension agents. The background factors are primary dimensions of diversity and are less amenable to change, exert significant impacts, and shape our basic self-image, sense of identity, and early learning experiences. Researchers often ignore the interdependence of the background factors with other (secondary) dimensions of diversity, in which the latter are changeable personal characteristics that are acquired, and may be modified or abandoned throughout life. Although the secondary dimensions of diversity are more controllable, they will be affected by other people’s decisions, which in this book we see as environmental factors. The reliability and applicability of the above-mentioned theoretical discussions have been tested in an original study involving extension agents in Iran.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the publication of They Love You They Hate You: Discovering Leadership in 2007, a new comprehensive review of basic leadership behaviors were presented to global corporations and frontline leaders that provided a guide to talent retention, empowerment, engagement, and commitment building. Now Dr. Shelton introduces "First They Came," a popular poem attributed to Martin Niemöller describing how Hitler, during his rise to power, purged group after group without much opposition. This is a continuance on the principles of courage, trust, and serving others around you in a transformational way. Transformational leadership is a philosophy and a way of life; it cannot be gained in a leadership short course but only through study, experience, and application. Constructive leadership qualities are not secret and have been applied since the beginning of mankind. Trust, kindness, integrity, empowerment, communications, other orientation, knowledge seeking, motivation, and courage are discussed in detail with supporting cases and anecdotes. Many of these characteristics are not taught in the academic schools of management, yet they remain as powerful today as they had been in the past. "First They Came" originated as anecdotes and life experiences regarding failed and successful acts of leadership. Chapters in the book deal with leadership in military, industry, academia, the Middle East, and across cultures. In the end, Martin Niemöller's poem suggests that we must set our moral standards higher and seek for one another's best interest in life and in business.
