Book Synopsis Landscapes of Exile by : Anna Haebich
Download or read book Landscapes of Exile written by Anna Haebich and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by the international conference 'Landscapes of Exile: Once Perilous, Now Safe' held in Australia in 2006, this book examines the experience and nature of exile - one of the most powerful and recurrent themes of the human condition. In response to the central question posed of how the experience of exile has impacted on society and culture, this book offers a rich collection of essays. Through a kaleidoscope of views on the metaphorical, spatial, imaginative, reflective and experiential nature of exile, it investigates a diverse range of landscapes of belonging and exclusion - social, cultural, legal, poetic, literary, indigenous, political - that confront humanity. At the very heart of landscapes of exile is the irony of history, and therefore of identity and home. Who is now safe and who is not? What was perilous? Who now is in peril? What does it mean to belong? This book provides key examinations of these questions.

Book Synopsis The Battle of One Tree Hill by : Ray Kerkhove
Download or read book The Battle of One Tree Hill written by Ray Kerkhove and published by Boolarong Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1840, Brisbane was the furthest outpost of settled Australia. On all sides, it was embedded in a richly Indigenous world. Over the next few years, mostly from across New South Wales northern plains, a large push of pastoralists poured into the Darling Downs, Lockyer and much of southern Queensland, establishing huge sheep stations. The violence that erupted welded many of the tribal groups into an alliance that, by 1842, was working to halt the advance. The Battle of One Tree Hill tells the story of one of the most audacious stands against this migration. It concerns actions engineered by a father and son, Moppy and Multuggerah. In 1843, this culminated in an ingenious ambush and one of the first solid defeats of white settlement in Queensland. The battle at Mount Table Top, 128 kilometres west of Brisbane, astounded many at the time. The response was most likely the largest action of the frontier wars: the assembly of some 100 or more officers, soldiers, police and armed settlers – much of the region’s white settlement – drawn from hundreds of square kilometres. This force sought to drive out the warriors, but despite their best efforts, resistance not only persisted, but managed a few more victories. A fort had to be established to protect travellers, and brutal skirmishes, massacres, raids and robberies trickled on for decades. The Battle of One Tree Hill introduces us to many of the flamboyant characters, curious reversals of fortune and neglected incidents that together helped establish early Queensland. This narrative work combines decades of archival research, analysis, reconstruction and interviews conducted by historians Ray Kerkhove and Frank Uhr.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fugitive Anne At the other side of the table, Opposite the Dane, and apparently interested too, in the affair of Mrs Bedo's locked door, stood an Australian black boy in European dress - that is, in a steward's dress of white linen, with a napkin in his hand for it had happened that Kombo, Mr and Mrs Bedo s aboriginal servant, had, with the permission of his master and mistress, taken the place of a Chinese boy, temporarily disabled by a malarial fever. These people were at the upper end of the saloon, near which was Mrs Bedo's cabin. At the lower end, the remaining passengers, with the purser and another steward, had congregated. The passengers were few; a Javanese shipping agent, a Catholic priest, a person connected with telegraphs, and two or three bushmen on their way back from Singapore or Europe, as the case might be. These were all waiting, with gaping mouths and open eyes, for the tragedy which they imagined would be disclosed. For it was Openly suspected on board, that Mrs Bedo disliked and feared her husband. Mr Bedo had been knocking violently at the cabin door, but no answer was returned. He was a coarse, powerful person, with an ill-featured face, a sinewy throat, and great, brawny hands. He had started in life as a bullock driver and was now a rich man, having struck gold In the early days Of Charters Towers Diggings - before, indeed, Charters Towers had become Officially established. Download or read book From Cohen to Carson written by Ian Rae and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2008-03-26 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailed case studies of novels by Leonard Cohen, Michael Ondaatje, George Bowering, Daphne Marlatt, and Anne Carson, as well as sections on A.M. Klein and Anne Michaels, reveal how these authors framed their early novels according to formal precedents established in their poetry. In tracking the authors’ shift from lyric to long poem to novel, Rae also investigates their experiments with non-literary art forms - photography, painting, film. The authors discussed combine disparate genres and media to alter notions of narrative coherence in the novel and engage the diverse but fragmented cultural histories of Canadian society.
