Book excerpt: In this test program, four military engines and a gas turbine combustor were run to determine the effects of fuel properties on combustion performance. During this program, 18 test fuels were prepared with properties extending beyond the range of the specifications of diesel fuels. Diesel engine performance data were analyzed statistically, and regression equations were obtained for each engine expressing load in terms of speed, energy input, cetane number, kinematic viscosity, 10-percent boiling point, and aromatic content. Combustion performance measurements in the T-63 gas turbine combustor included flame radiation, exhaust smoke, gaseous emissions (THC, CO and NOx), combustion efficiency, and ignition properties. The atomizing characteristics of the test fuels were examined with a particle sizing system based on forward-angle diffraction, and the results were correlated with the ignition properties of the fuels. Flame radiation and exhaust smoke were correlated with H/C ratio of the fuel. Viscosity and end point work were used as correlating parameters for THC and CO emissions, and combustion efficiency. Significance of the results was discussed, and recommendations for further testing was presented.

Book excerpt: The effects of a wide variety of fuel types on the gaseous exhaust emissions, smoke, and particulates and on the combustor wall temperatures of a small industrial gas turbine engine are presented. The results were determined from evaluation tests conducted with the use of a single-shaft, constant-speed engine, rated at 534 kW, which employs a single, can-type combustor. The test fuels included a pure hydrocarbon, aviation gasoline, jet fuels, diesel fuel, fuel oils, an experimental broad-specification fuel, and a coal-derived fuel from the solvent-refined coal II (SRC-II) process. The hydrogen content of the fuels ranged from 9.1 to 16.1% by weight. Decreasing the fuel hydrogen content increased smoke emissions and combustor wall temperatures. The relationship between the mass concentration of exhaust particulates and the smoke number was similar for the coal-derived SRC-II and petroleum-based fuels. The combustion efficiency, determined from exhaust hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions, did not change appreciably at any load condition for a wide range of fuel properties. The conversion of fuel-bound nitrogen to exhaust nitrogen oxides (NOx) was found to depend on the fuel nitrogen content and engine load. The conversion efficiencies were similar for the coal liquid, which was naturally high in fuel-bound nitrogen, and an artificially doped petroleum fuel.

Measurements of mean drop size conducted at representative engine operating conditions are used to supplement the available experimental data on the effects of combustor design parameters, combustor operating conditions and fuel type, on combustion efficiency, lean blowout limits, lean lightoff limits,liner wall temperatures, pattern factor, and pollutant emissions. The results of the study indicate that the fuel's physical properties that govern atomization quality and evaporation rates strongly affect combustion efficiency, weak extinction limits, and lean lightoff limits. The influence of fuel chemistry on these performance parameters is quite small. Analysis of the experimental data shows that fuel chemistry has a significant effect on flame emissivity, flame radiation, and liner wall temperature, but its influence on the emissions of carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbons, and oxides of nitrogen, is small. Smoke emissions are found to be strongly dependent on combustion pressure, primary-zone fuel/air ratio, and the mode of fuel injection (pressure atomization or airblast). Fuel chemistry, as indicated by hydrogen content, is also important.

Eighteen fuels including synfuels were used to accentuate the properties of concern: composition, viscosity, and boiling-point distribution. Flame radiation and smoke were best correlated by hydrogen content rather than hydrocarbon structure; the soot formation was due to gas-phase reactions. Lean-blowout conditions were about the same for all fuels except that gasoline could be burned leaner at idle conditions. Ignition limits were more sensitive to volatility than viscosity. Gaseous emissions and combustion efficiency were not significantly affected by fuel properties although some sensitivity to boiling point distribution was evident. In all performance areas, the syncrude fuels correlated in the same ways as the petroleum-derived fuels except fo the NOx emissions from the nitrogen containing shale oil fuel. (Author).
