Hence food security and safety remains a hot topic worldwide in academic research arenas and food industry practices. This book describes efforts from academia, government, and industry to counter food terrorism and to protect the food supply against any threat. In addition, it evaluates the global food supply, production capabilities, and food availability during and after disasters. Articles in the book assess food safety emergencies, and the prevention of, and response to deliberate contamination by microbial or chemical substances. Minimization of health and economic risks following a terrorist act or unintentional contamination is likewise discussed. The book also examines novel preservation techniques, methods to produce safe food products, and other concerns for ensuring a stable and safe food supply.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louisiana state law was unique in allowing slaves to contract for their freedom and to initiate a lawsuit for liberty. Judith Kelleher Schafer describes the ingenious and remarkably sophisticated ways New Orleans slaves used the legal system to gain their independence and find a voice in a society that ordinarily gave them none. Showing that remaining free was often as challenging as becoming free, Schafer also recounts numerous cases in which free people of color were forced to use the courts to prove their status. She further documents seventeen free blacks who, when faced with deportation, amazingly sued to enslave themselves. Schafer’s impressive detective work achieves a rare feat in the historical profession—the unveiling of an entirely new facet of the slave experience in the American South.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fruit of The Spirit is a recollection of Jeannette’s personal experiences with God and how each one of them grows in her as her faith and her relationship with the Lord grows stronger since she was 15 years old. Each of Jeannette’s experiences helped her not only to be a better person, but to be a better Christian. Her trials may not be the same as yours. God see us individually, for that reason our personal experiences will be that, personal. When Paul wrote the letters to the Galatians, he made very clear how important was for them as a Christians to not only live by the Spirit, but to walk by the Spirit. We must remember that we all live in glass houses; meaning, that we are being watch constantly by those who do not agree with our life style. Being Christian is much more than simply go and occupied a chair once a week; maybe twice. We are representing The Almighty here in Earth, and even though we fail him sometimes, he still love us. The Bible is full of stories of redemption; after all we are humans, we will be in this flesh until the rapture. We will not reach perfection until we are in front of His presence. We have to continue the fight, this spiritual fight in which the adversary will do everything in his powers to see us fail, to make us quit. Only when we dedicate our life’s to serve God, and when we work thru prayer, fasting, and real worship his Fruit will be manifested in us, because it is there for whom ever want it. Look for it, search for, live it and you will see God’s wonders in you. That is His promise!

Book excerpt: Extrait de la couverture "Much has been written about the negative impact of globalisation on the world's poor, and especially on women. But globalisation also opens up new economic opportunities if poor women producers and workers are enabled to take advantage of them. The need for assistance differs between independent producers on the one hand and wage workers in export industries on the other. In ther former case, the need mainly is for increased access to global markets. In the latter case, the need mainly is for better organizing so as to bargain for better wages and working conditions. This edited volume brings together six case studies. Three link local producers with global markets (...). Three focus on improving the working conditions of the hundreds of thousands of wage workers in global value chains."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Christianity includes many doctrines adopted (and actions taken) to meet immediate problems but which had unintended consequences; they are bad fruit (Matt 7:15-20). The oldest is antisemitism, which arose from the competition of the early church with early Judaism. It was built into the New Testament and was developed by the church fathers. Having learned to dehumanize, it was easy to apply the same techniques to other groups; the church became complicit with enslavement, misogyny, and other forms of oppression. One response to the bad fruit is to reject religion, in the manner of Christopher Hitchens. However, the dogmas are part of our culture even if in secular form. If the roots of marginalization are not understood, they cannot be eliminated. This work uses a range of critics and defenders of traditional Western Christianity to identify poisonous fruits and detoxify them. The critical voices do not create a consensus. Nevertheless, a core can be perceived, what Erasmus called the "few truths." Grounded in the religious tradition, they can be shared with secular people as a basis for an ethical, merciful, and respectful society. Although the history of Christianity is bloody, there are ways to go forward.
