Book excerpt: Bioactive Foods in Promoting Health: Probiotics and Prebiotics brings together experts working on the different aspects of supplementation, foods, and bacterial preparations, in health promotion and disease prevention, to provide current scientific information, as well as providing a framework upon which to build clinical disease treatment studies. Since common dietary bacterial preparations are over-the-counter and readily available, this book will be useful to the growing nutrition, food science, and natural product community that will use it as a resource in identifying dietary behavioral modifications in pursuit of improved health as well as for treatment of specific disease, as it focuses on the growing body of knowledge of the role of various bacteria in reducing disease risk and disease. Probiotics are now a multi-billion-dollar, dietary supplement business which is built upon extremely little research data. In order to follow the 1994 ruling, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration with the support of Congress is currently pushing this industry to base its claims and products on scientific research. Research as shown that dietary habits need to be altered for most people whether for continued or improved good health. The conclusions and recommendations from the various chapters in this book will provide a basis for those important factors of change by industry with new uses. Animal studies and early clinical ones will lead to new uses and studies. Particularly the cutting edge experimental and clinical studies from Europe will provide novel approaches to clinical uses through their innovative new studies. Heavy emphasis on clinical applications (benefits and/or lack thereof) as well as future biomedical therapeutic uses identified in animal model studies Focused on therapies and data supporting them for application in clinical medicine as complementary and alternative medicines Key insights into gut flora and the potential health benefits thereof Health scientists and nutritionists will use this information to map out key areas of research. Food scientists will use it in product development Information on pre-and probiotics as important sources of micro-and macronutrients Aids in the development of methods of bio-modification of dietary plant molecules for health promotion Coverage of a broad range of bacterial consituents Nutritionists will use the information to identify which of these constituents should be used as dietary supplements based on health status of an individual Science-based information on the health promoting characteristics of pre-and probiotics Provides defense of food selections for individual consumption based on health needs and current status Diverse international authoring team experienced in studying prebiotics and probiotics for medical practice Unusally broad range of experiences and newly completed clinical and animal studies provides extended access to latest information

Book excerpt: Winner of the American Horticulture Society Book Award "Phillip’s first-hand knowledge anchors this innovative and highly readable book in practical wisdom that both beginner and long-time fruit growers will find invaluable."—Toby Hemenway, author of Gaia’s Garden Many people want to grow fruit on a small scale but lack the insight to be successful orchardists. As The Holistic Orchard illustrates, growing tree fruits and berries is something virtually anyone can do. A holistic grower knows that producing fruit is not about manipulating nature but more importantly, fostering nature. The Holistic Orchard demystifies the basic skills everybody should know about the orchard ecosystem, focusing on: Orchard design Soil biology Organic health management Grafting Planting Pruning Choosing the right varieties for your climate Includes a step-by-step instructional calendar to guide growers through the entire orchard year! Fruit profiles include: pome fruits (apples, pears, asian pears, quinces) stone fruits (cherries, peaches, nectarines, apricots, plums) berries (raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, gooseberries, currants, and elderberries) Phillips completely changed the conversation about healthy orcharding with his first bestselling book, The Apple Grower, and now he takes that dialogue even further by exploring: The connections between home orcharding and permaculture The importance of native pollinators Plantings with shade-tolerant berry bushes and other insectary plants Information on cover crops and biodiversity Safe, homegrown solutions to pest and disease challenges All along the way, Phillips' expertise and enthusiasm for healthy growing shines through, as does his ability to put the usual horticultural facts into an integrated ecology perspective. With The Holistic Orchard in your hand you have every reason in the world to confidently plant that very first—or next—fruit tree!

Book excerpt: Don’t judge me that I hate my daughter, she reminds me of my mother who collected money from her mate to defile me. Don’t judge me that I’m not sound academically, every sound keeps me awake at night with the fear that it’s not another fight between my parents. Don’t judge me that I sleep in school, my brother never allows me to sleep at night because he is homosexual. Don’t judge me that I had sex with him, he was going to sack my husband from work if I do not. Don’t judge me that I patronize prostitutes, my wife also demands for money before or after sex and she holds back if I don’t give her. Don’t judge me that I’m homosexual, I don’t even know how to be a man. Don’t judge me that I divorced him, you see him as a sparkling white angel but I always see a seven-horned devil. Don’t judge me that I’m always out of the house, my home is hell. Don’t judge me that I don’t regard my in-laws, my spouse has not left them to cleave to me. Don’t judge me that I don’t want to marry, I don’t want to be the kind of wife to any man that my mother was to my father. Don’t judge me that I kept it secret, my love ones did not believe me when I told them. Don’t judge me that I talk too much, I’m scared of the pictures that silence brings back to my mind. Don’t judge me that I have this bad habit, I really want to stop it, and Ive tried, but it overpowers me. Don’t judge me that I attempted suicide, nothing seems to make sense anymore, its the end and I’d rather end it myself now than wake for someday. Don’t judge me that I’m too quiet, nobody listens to me. Don’t judge me that I’m promiscuous, isn’t sex what we are made for?! Don’t judge me that I’m a lesbian, men irritate me because of my experience with my father. Don’t judge me that I don’t love or trust, I don’t even know what they mean because I never experienced them. Don’t judge me that I’m gullible, I’ve always been called “stupid”. Don’t judge me that I don’t like my brother, he stole my mother’s love from me. Don’t judge me that left her, you’ve only heard too little of the whole story and she is playing the victim. Don’t judge me, you don’t know my story. This book explains the roots of human psychology, and reveals how human can be managed, even dysfunctional ones.

This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How we produce and consume food has a bigger impact on Americans' well-being than any other human activity. The food industry is the largest sector of our economy; food touches everything from our health to the environment, climate change, economic inequality, and the federal budget. From the earliest developments of agriculture, a major goal has been to attain sufficient foods that provide the energy and the nutrients needed for a healthy, active life. Over time, food production, processing, marketing, and consumption have evolved and become highly complex. The challenges of improving the food system in the 21st century will require systemic approaches that take full account of social, economic, ecological, and evolutionary factors. Policy or business interventions involving a segment of the food system often have consequences beyond the original issue the intervention was meant to address. A Framework for Assessing Effects of the Food System develops an analytical framework for assessing effects associated with the ways in which food is grown, processed, distributed, marketed, retailed, and consumed in the United States. The framework will allow users to recognize effects across the full food system, consider all domains and dimensions of effects, account for systems dynamics and complexities, and choose appropriate methods for analysis. This report provides example applications of the framework based on complex questions that are currently under debate: consumption of a healthy and safe diet, food security, animal welfare, and preserving the environment and its resources. A Framework for Assessing Effects of the Food System describes the U.S. food system and provides a brief history of its evolution into the current system. This report identifies some of the real and potential implications of the current system in terms of its health, environmental, and socioeconomic effects along with a sense for the complexities of the system, potential metrics, and some of the data needs that are required to assess the effects. The overview of the food system and the framework described in this report will be an essential resource for decision makers, researchers, and others to examine the possible impacts of alternative policies or agricultural or food processing practices.
