Download or read book Structure and Performance of Cements, Second Edition written by P. Barnes and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing together a multinational team of authors, this second edition of Structure and Performance of Cements highlights the latest global advances in the field of cement technology. Three broad categories are covered: basic materials and methods, cement extenders, and techniques of examination. Within these categories consideration has been given to environmental issues such as the use of waste materials in cement-burning as supplementary fuels and new and improved methods of instrumentation for examining structural aspects and performance of cements. This book also covers cement production, mineralogy and hydration, as well as the mechanical properties of cement, and the corrosion and durability of cementitious systems. Special cements are included, along with calcium aluminate and blended cements together with a consideration of the role of gypsum in cements. Structure and Performance of Cements is an invaluable key reference for academics, researchers and practitioners alike.
Book Synopsis The Need for Air Entrainment in High Performance Concrete by : W. Micah Hale
Download or read book The Need for Air Entrainment in High Performance Concrete written by W. Micah Hale and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of high performance concrete (HPC) in exterior structures has increased in recent years. Its increased strength and durability make HPC very appealing to the prestressed concrete industry, particularly in bridge girders. Due to its increased strength and durability, HPC can reduce the number of girders, increase bridge spans, decrease bridge depth, and improve bridge durability. Generally, concrete bridges have enjoyed a relatively maintenance free existence. There is some concern that concrete bridge girders should be air entrained; however, the inclusion of air entrainment will reduce concrete strengths. The research program investigated the need for air entrainment in HPC and its effect on HPC bridge girders, and the effects of air entrainment on other important properties.

Book Synopsis Resistance of Concrete to Freezing and Thawing by : Donald J. Janssen
Download or read book Resistance of Concrete to Freezing and Thawing written by Donald J. Janssen and published by Strategic Highway Research Program (Shrp). This book was released on 1994 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study, aimed at improving the freeze-thaw resistance of concrete, consists of three parts. Part I evaluates parameters affecting the freeze-thaw durability of concrete. A modification of the existing standard of method for determining the durability factor of concrete specimens is proposed, and a new procedure for fundamental transverse frequency (used in durability factor calculations) has been developed. Part II focuses on developing better methods for identifying nondurable aggregates, and has resulted in a rapid new test based on the hydraulic fracture of aggregates. Part III describes field experiments to evaluate the freeze-thaw resistance of a number of specified concrete mixes and the use of sealants to mitigate D-cracking. Preliminary field performance results are presented.

Book Synopsis Freezing and Thawing Resistance of High-strength Concrete by : Robert E. Philleo
Download or read book Freezing and Thawing Resistance of High-strength Concrete written by Robert E. Philleo and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent developments have made a new generation of high-strength concrete a viable material for routine construction. The two principal developments are high-range water-reducing admixtures, which permit the placement of concrete of very low water-cement ratio, and silica fume, a pozzolan of extremely high fineness. The advent of this high- strength concrete has put requirements for strength and durability in conflict. Because entrained air reduces the strength of concrete, builders seek to eliminate or limit the use of entrained air. There are those who argue that high-strength concrete is of such a quality that entrained air is unnecessary. Much of the high-strength concrete currently being used is in buildings, where the question of durability is minor. The question, however, cannot be avoided in exposed highway structures. Service records of non-air-entrained high-strength concrete exposed to freezing are not conclusive. Hence, this report synthesizes the available knowledge on the subject. Its aim is to provide guidance to those who wish to use high-strength concrete in typical highway applications and to indicate where further information is needed.

Book Synopsis The Issues and Discussion of Modern Concrete Science by : Wenke Yang
Download or read book The Issues and Discussion of Modern Concrete Science written by Wenke Yang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-19 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to two primary objectives. The first is to present the errors, inadaptability and mistakes arising when the current theory on concrete is applied to explaining practical construction of concrete; the second is to put forward viewpoints in modern concrete science. Taking a number of engineering cases as examples, we experimentally studied and theoretically analyzed the errors, inadaptability, and mistakes when the current theory on concrete is applied to explaining practical construction of concrete. Moreover, we investigated the use of mixing ratios, aggregates, cement, high-performance concrete and fibers, as well as the frost resistance, cracking behavior, durability, dry shrinkage and autogenous healing to address and remedy the shortcomings in today’s concrete science, put forward new proposals and make a number of innovative achievements in the field, particularly in modern theory on concrete science. The results and topics which will be of particular interest to engineers and researchers include: corrections to several one-sided, even mistaken views on concrete construction in the field and a new theory that can be adopted to improve the durability of concrete projects, to control and improve the implementation quality of concrete projects and to guide teaching in universities. Wenke Yang is a distinguished senior engineer at China Airport Construction Group Corporation, General Administration of Civil Aviation of China (CAAC).
