Book Synopsis Beyond the Nation by : Martin Joseph Ponce
Download or read book Beyond the Nation written by Martin Joseph Ponce and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of the American Literatures Initiative Series Beyond the Nation charts an expansive history of Filipino literature in the U.S., forged within the dual contexts of imperialism and migration, from the early twentieth century into the twenty-first. Martin Joseph Ponce theorizes and enacts a queer diasporic reading practice that attends to the complex crossings of race and nation with gender and sexuality. Tracing the conditions of possibility of Anglophone Filipino literature to U.S. colonialism in the Philippines in the early twentieth century, the book examines how a host of writers from across the century both imagine and address the Philippines and the United States, inventing a variety of artistic lineages and social formations in the process. Beyond the Nation considers a broad array of issues, from early Philippine nationalism, queer modernism, and transnational radicalism, to music-influenced and cross-cultural poetics, gay male engagements with martial law and popular culture, second-generational dynamics, and the relation between reading and revolution. Ponce elucidates not only the internal differences that mark this literary tradition but also the wealth of expressive practices that exceed the terms of colonial complicity, defiant nationalism, or conciliatory assimilation. Moving beyond the nation as both the primary analytical framework and locus of belonging, Ponce proposes that diasporic Filipino literature has much to teach us about alternative ways of imagining erotic relationships and political communities.

Book Synopsis Beyond Loneliness and Institutions by : Nils Christie
Download or read book Beyond Loneliness and Institutions written by Nils Christie and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Loneliness and Institutions is about experimental villages for extraordinary people--these villages are communal, operate on a shared economy, reconstruct ancient social and cultural forms, and provide room for people with a rich variety of eccentric behaviors. Many people whom the sate classificatory systems label as deficient live together in these experimental villages; they share housing, meals, work, and cultural life. There are no individual salaries, no staff, and no clients. And these communes are neither institutions nor ordinary. They are places for the extraordinary. Nils Christie interacted with experimental villages for twenty years before writing Beyond Loneliness and Institutions. During these twenty years, he moved back and forth between the villages and ordinary society. Each move, each time, was both a cultural and an emotional shock. He experienced two types of life, each with its own reason for life. Their differences do, however, illuminate each other. Beyond Loneliness and Institutions attempts to describe what this illumination renders visible--on both sides.
Book Synopsis Beyond Filial Piety by : Jeanne Shea
Download or read book Beyond Filial Piety written by Jeanne Shea and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2020-07-01 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known for a tradition of Confucian filial piety, East Asian societies have some of the oldest and most rapidly aging populations on earth. Today these societies are experiencing unprecedented social challenges to the filial tradition of adult children caring for aging parents at home. Marshalling mixed methods data, this volume explores the complexities of aging and caregiving in contemporary East Asia. Questioning romantic visions of a senior’s paradise, chapters examine emerging cultural meanings of and social responses to population aging, including caregiving both for and by the elderly. Themes include traditional ideals versus contemporary realities, the role of the state, patterns of familial and non-familial care, social stratification, and intersections of caregiving and death. Drawing on ethnographic, demographic, policy, archival, and media data, the authors trace both common patterns and diverging trends across China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, and Korea.

Book Synopsis Beyond Icons by : William R. Caraher
Download or read book Beyond Icons written by William R. Caraher and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-19 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collective reflection on the relationship between theory and methods, as practiced by American archaeologists of the Byzantine period in Greece, Turkey, Ukraine, and Egypt between the 1990s and 2020s. The eleven authors represent a generational voice that employed theory to redirect the established narratives of the golden age of Byzantine archaeology (1960s–1980s) that privileged art and religion. Beyond Icons: Theories and Methods in Byzantine Archaeology in North America originated in three conferences (2010, 2012, and 2013) organized by the Program of Byzantine Studies at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C. Acknowledging the role that Dumbarton Oaks played in the golden age of Byzantine archaeology, Program Director Margaret Mullett designed these conferences as exercises in conceptualizing the field’s future. The chapters consider theories of fragments, methodologies in regional surface survey, stratigraphy, habitus, phenomenology, gender theory, craft, dreams, and sound. In doing so, they capture a moment in the study of Byzantine archaeology and material culture and chart out future directions for the field. This book will appeal to scholars and students alike, as well as all those interested in Byzantine Studies, medieval archaeology (particularly of the eastern Mediterranean), and Byzantine material culture. It will also be of interest to anyone seeking to understand the emerging narrative of a global Middle Ages. The chapters reflect the ways in which the study of Byzantine archaeology was shaped by the scholarship of those working in the United States and Canada.

Peter McAleese’s No Mean Soldier set the bar for the modern military memoir. This completely revised and expanded edition sees a philosophical McAleese revisiting his time with Britain's Parachute Regiment, the SAS, Rhodesia's SAS and the South African Defense Force's 44 Para Brigade. Peter also recounts a range of other adventures, from his experiences with private military companies to near fatal skydiving accidents. With previously unpublished photos from McAleese’s private collection, Beyond No Mean Soldier delves deeper and further into the author’s wide-ranging experiences, the men he's served with, and the operations he'd conducted. Here in startling detail are the Aden insurgency; covert operations with the Rhodesian SAS; one of the first ever operational HALO inserts in British military history; assaults on SWAPO positions with 44 Para's Pathfinder Company; a botched assassination attempt in Colombia; and much more.
