Book Synopsis Caring for the 'Holy Land' by : Claudia Liebelt
Download or read book Caring for the 'Holy Land' written by Claudia Liebelt and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Israel, as in numerous countries of the global North, Filipina women have been recruited in large numbers for domestic work, typically as live-in caregivers for the elderly. The case of Israel is unique in that the country has a special significance as the ‘Holy Land’ for the predominantly devout Christian Filipina women and is at the center of an often violent conflict, which affects Filipinos in many ways. In the literature, migrant domestic workers are often described as being subject to racial discrimination, labour exploitation and exclusion from mainstream society. Here, the author provides a more nuanced account and shows how Filipina caregivers in Israel have succeeded in creating their own collective spaces, as well as negotiating rights and belonging. While maintaining transnational ties and engaging in border-crossing journeys, these women seek to fulfill their dreams of a better life. During this process, new socialities and subjectivities emerge that point to a form of global citizenship in the making, consisting of greater social, economic and political rights within a highly gendered and racialized global economy.

This book was released on 2020-02-19 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an outcome of an international symposium: Sustainability –Can We Design the Future of Human Life and the Environment? which was held as a satellite event of the “Love the Earth”-Expo 2005 (Aichi, Japan). Each chapter is based on the lecture given by the following eminent researchers: Yoshinori Ishii, Hans-Peter Dürr, Yoshinori Yasuda, Minoru Kawada, Yasunobu Iwasaka, Werner Rothengatter, Hisae Nakanishi, Yang Dongyuan, Lee Schipper, Itsuo Kodama, and Yoshitsugu Hayashi. In the Part I titled “A Sustainable Relationship between Nature and Humans”, we discuss what will become of fossil fuels and petroleum, and what kind of indicators should be used to monitor the energy expended by human society. We then discuss environmental impacts caused by different civilizations and values on Nature and ethics, based on the perspective of environmental archaeology and on the discussions by Kunio Yanagita, the father of Japanese folklore study. The Part II is titled and shows “International Conflict Concerning Environmental Damage and Its Causes”. The Asian dust (Kosa) is a typical example of transboundary conflicts between nations. Another example can be found in the EU’s attempt to put in place a common motorway toll system across EU countries having different geographical and economic conditions. Finally, Part III covers the opinions and further debates on sustainable future earth based on the lectures in Parts I and II.We hope that great insights in this book will come across to readers, and be of help in steering the world towards a sustainable society in harmony with biosystems on earth.

Book Synopsis An Indonesian-English Dictionary by : John M. Echols
Download or read book An Indonesian-English Dictionary written by John M. Echols and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This dictionary is meant primarily as a tool for English speakers who need to know Indonesian and who deal with Indonesian writings. The aim has thus been to give comprehensive coverage to forms a foreigner might run across in Indonesian readings, from this era or from the past, but excluding classical Malay literature, Much of the Indonesian written production (written and otherwise) contains slangy, colloquial, and regional forms, and we have not excluded such forms. On the other hand we have confined the listing of dialectical forms only to those likely to be widely known...The dictionary should also be useful to Indonesians who wish to learn English equivalents of Indonesian words, but it has not been developed primarily for that purpose, because many English words can only be defined by a sequence of Indonesian words." from Introduction.
