Growing up poor is not something that I or most people would have chosen, but the fact is, one can no more choose ones starting position in life than the parents one is born to. That is where this book begins, but its ending is still being written, and it speaks of the grace and mercy of God even when it looks like the outlook seems grim at best. I don't pretend to suggest that this book will change your life, but what I do promise is that you will hear a firsthand account of how your circumstances do not have to dictate the narrative of your life. God has a plan; we just need to trust in that plan regardless of outward influences. My hope is that you walk away from this book renewed in spirit, empowerment for the fight, and be an encouragement to the next person. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Michael Padgett is a Husband, Student, and Military Veteran who served in the Army from 1986 to 1992, primarily at Fort Erwin, California. Michael balances life between his education, work, and marriage of 20 years. As a former Pastor and Missionary, Michael's journey in all of these areas has helped him develop a personal relationship with Jesus that motivates his aspirations of seeing other believers grow in their faith.

But in jail he became a Christian, experienced miraculous events and went on to lead a prison ministry. Whether we're incarcerated or not, each of us struggles with issues. How can we change, grow, overcome? In his powerful book Pastor Moody not only shows you how his life was changed, but he gives you the keys to your victory over issues holding you back.

Taft and the first decade of the Progressive era, that tumultuous time when the nation was coming unseamed and reform was in the air. Winner of the Carnegie Medal. Doris Kearns Goodwin’s The Bully Pulpit is a dynamic history of the first decade of the Progressive era, that tumultuous time when the nation was coming unseamed and reform was in the air. The story is told through the intense friendship of Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft—a close relationship that strengthens both men before it ruptures in 1912, when they engage in a brutal fight for the presidential nomination that divides their wives, their children, and their closest friends, while crippling the progressive wing of the Republican Party, causing Democrat Woodrow Wilson to be elected, and changing the country’s history. The Bully Pulpit is also the story of the muckraking press, which arouses the spirit of reform that helps Roosevelt push the government to shed its laissez-faire attitude toward robber barons, corrupt politicians, and corporate exploiters of our natural resources. The muckrakers are portrayed through the greatest group of journalists ever assembled at one magazine—Ida Tarbell, Ray Stannard Baker, Lincoln Steffens, and William Allen White—teamed under the mercurial genius of publisher S.S. McClure. Goodwin’s narrative is founded upon a wealth of primary materials. The correspondence of more than four hundred letters between Roosevelt and Taft begins in their early thirties and ends only months before Roosevelt’s death. Edith Roosevelt and Nellie Taft kept diaries. The muckrakers wrote hundreds of letters to one another, kept journals, and wrote their memoirs. The letters of Captain Archie Butt, who served as a personal aide to both Roosevelt and Taft, provide an intimate view of both men. The Bully Pulpit, like Goodwin’s brilliant chronicles of the Civil War and World War II, exquisitely demonstrates her distinctive ability to combine scholarly rigor with accessibility. It is a major work of history—an examination of leadership in a rare moment of activism and reform that brought the country closer to its founding ideals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book is a product of years of field service in the USA and overseas, an expose on classic trades skills which can be taught. In fact, the theme in general is to pass on what we have learned into the hands and hearts of the next generation. The reader can benefit from savvy advice from an old carpenter and even tackle a few projects that before might have seemed impossible. Barry writes about the reason for bivocational ministry as it strives to glorify God and make disciples by entering the market place environment. The book demonstrates how diverse and unique every unreached (for Christ) area can be. It is a motivation for discovery of empirical evidence, and then form a holistic effort to use available resources to shape lives. How do we nurture the concept of being "Salt & Light" to the world around us?Clear, common sense application of biblical principles opens the readers mind to a hermeneutic approach not learned in a classroom. Story after story will reveal insight into the mind of our savior Jesus Christ and his disciples. It is my hope that this writing effort from a novice will bear witness to wisdom from God in fresh new ways. It is my hope to grab the narrative on bivocational pastoral ministers and bring this model to a higher level of importance in the area of theologically sound & holistic outreach to the marginalized. In short, it is both a writing about an externship between a master & a novice, and a road map for Kingdom Community Development. Barry was raised in the Blacks Hills of South Dakota, where his heritage still bears evidence in gravestones and monuments such as Rushmore. He learned to hunt and fish, and perfect his artistic ability. He trained under many master carpenters & tradesmen, building homes, and various commercial projects. Barry and his wife have served the local church since 1975 and served as missionaries for about 10 years in Mexico City. They have two sons Tarver & Justin, and 5 grandchildren. Barry works with a theological institute facilitating classes in two languages, and is currently developing bivocational ministry in San Antonio, TX.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revealing look at the identity and mission of the Black church What is the true nature and mission of the church? Is its proper Christian purpose to save souls, or to transform the social order? This question is especially fraught when the church is one built by an enslaved people and formed, from its beginning, at the center of an oppressed community’s fight for personhood and freedom. Such is the central tension in the identity and mission of the Black church in the United States. For decades the Black church and Black theology have held each other at arm’s length. Black theology has emphasized the role of Christian faith in addressing racism and other forms of oppression, arguing that Jesus urged his disciples to seek the freedom of all peoples. Meanwhile, the Black church, even when focused on social concerns, has often emphasized personal piety rather than social protest. With the rising influence of white evangelicalism, biblical fundamentalism, and the prosperity gospel, the divide has become even more pronounced. In The Divided Mind of the Black Church, Raphael G. Warnock, Senior Pastor of the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, the spiritual home of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., traces the historical significance of the rise and development of Black theology as an important conversation partner for the Black church. Calling for honest dialogue between Black and womanist theologians and Black pastors, this fresh theological treatment demands a new look at the church’s essential mission.

These were multi-million-dollar projects that delivered the wealth of experience set down in this book. They have opened my eyes to project strategies that work, and those that do not work. The book is a vital tool for church operators and organizational leaders alike.Church and communal projects do not only pose engineering challenges, but are predominantly a hearts-and-minds issue. The book covers how a church project should be conceived, planned, and executed. It thrashes issues such as the part-time status of building committee members, the use of uncompleted facilities in concurrent operations, contractor selection, managing stakeholder expectations, and the technical and spiritual qualifications of project officials. It outlines viable options for funding church projects and strategies for preserving church infrastructural investments.

Book excerpt: Poverty has several definitions, depending on who's defining and from what perspective. For this discourse, we define it as emptiness that borders on acute lack--be it spiritual, social, material, economic, financial or political; the absence of basic provisions that makes a person's life meaningful and bearable. It's not just the absence of food, shelter or clothing but also the absence of health-care (by whatever definition), social rights and access to education, justice and public political space to shape events in the social environment. It's a measure of societal development (Seers 1977). Poverty level defines social status--which determines social access. Poverty is better explained or defined fully by the person experiencing it, with the right words and/or images for others to understand. Poverty is personal yet very public, As its presence is a collective condemnation of society (secular/spiritual). Paradoxically, poverty from close quarters (trusted by us), Is like friendly fire in a combat zone. Armies train their soldiers to take on enemy fire, and prevail. Friendly fire? It's not only a different kind of fire, it's unanticipated and response is difficult. Its impact is painful and response is challenging because relationships are involved. There's a shocking devastation because of its source. Poverty from a close quarter like a pulpit is really difficult to comprehend left alone deal with. Though difficult, friendly fire requires a response and to get on with the war at hand. We need the same approach in dealing with poverty from a very close source like a pulpit. Poverty from the Pulpit is a Christian-sociological analysis of poverty within the body of Christ in this era of "prosperity theology" that pervades Christendom today. it asks Christians everywhere to question their perception of poverty and see where the source of their poverty is and where the solution lies.

When I first felt the call of God to the ministry, I was convinced that I was not worthy or capable of serving in the ministry. How could a farm boy with very little spiritual background be of any use to the Lord? I have learned that God does not determine the choice of His servants by appearance, education, but by their heart. Samuel 16:7 says, "The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." Fortunately for me, I had spiritual leaders in my life that helped me sort out God's will for my life. When I was convinced that ministry was God's will for my life, then I moved in that direction. Little by little, I sorted things out in my life in terms of God's will. If it was God's will and I was sure of it, then my life must move in that direction. I learned God only opens one door at a time, when we walk through that door and we are sure it is God's direction, then the next door will open. The how and why is up to God, and we must trust Him under all conditions and circumstances.

Book excerpt: In his very personal account, Ed Koncel, a well read and thoughtful Catholic, shares his recollections of the church past, his frustrations with the church present and his hopes for Catholicism's more vibrant future. Robert McClory, author of As It Was in the Beginning Ed Koncel writes from the perspective of a faithful son of the Church--faithful over the course of his long life. He writes with both passion and compassion in regard to the people and the proceedings of the Second Vatican Council and the developments since the Council. Obviously well read and actively involved in various groups working to make real the words and spirit of the documents of the Vatican II, he speaks with the authority of knowledge and personal experience and integrity. I believe he also speaks as one whose love of the Church motivates him to keep working for its coming to accept the full participation of all in the liturgical and governmental life of its people. Mr. Koncel strikes me as a man of hope--an extraordinary virtue in our time! Denise Wilkinson, SP, General Superior of the Sisters of Providence

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its founding in 1877, a series of remarkable preachers have filled the pulpit at the Dexter Avenue (King Memorial) Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Most famous among them, of course, was Martin Luther King, Jr., whose leadership of the civil rights movement began in a meeting in the basement of the Dexter Church at the outset of the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955. Yet King's was only one of the powerful voices which thundered the social gospel from what has become one of the most significant religious edifices in the world. In this book, editor Michael Thurman--the current pastor of the church-presents sermons from each of the ministers who have led the church since 1947. These pastors are: Vernon Johns, Martin Luther King, Jr., Herbert Eaton, G. Murray Branch, Robert Dickerson, Boykin Sanders, Richard Wills, and Michael Thurman. Their collective sermons reveal the rhetorical and literary talents which are a hallmark of great preaching, the profound faith which has sustained the African American tradition, and the power and persuasiveness which have come to be identified with the Dexter Church pulpit as a force for both spiritual and social change.
