Book excerpt: Excerpt from From the Atlantic to the Pacific, Overland: A Series of Letters Mississippi river; but many do not travel, and are now receiving their first impressions. I shall not weary you with detail, but take the trip as I find it, from New York to San Francisco, June 7th, 1865. The New York railroads are not as crowded as they were last season. Too much rain has fallen for corn east Of Syracuse. Many fields must be replanted, with chance not to ripen, or the crop is a failure. Other cereals look finely, and little change to Central Michigan. In the vicinity of Rochester, and throughout our richest agricul tural districts, many women may be seen tilling the soil as regular field-hands. I could but remark the contrast between this and when I was a boy, Of the same section. All were then more on a level, and a woman's position was respected. Now, the accumulation of money by the few - an investment in untaxable 7-so's - removes the happy patriot and owner thereof from common sympathy with the masses while the widow's boy, killed in battle, and the high taxes upon calico, brooms, and bonnets, which She is bound to pay, makes her a peasant and a hireling - one of the beauties of war and a national debt. Oh! Dear, deluded people! Did you ever think of European caste, what it means, how it is created, and who it affects? A few years will teach some new political lessons in tln country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From the Pacific to the Atlantic: Being an Account of a Journey Overland From Eureka, Humboldt Co., California, to Webster, Worcester Co., Mass., With a Horse, Carriage, Cow and Dog The world is full of books of travel, adventure and romance, which have covered almost every conceivable portion of the known world; most of which have been written by men of cul ture, leisure and wealth. Every land has been visited, every tribe and kindred. Of people have been portrayed, and the people made richer in the stores of knowledge derived from their perusal. In the accompanying pages will be found a detail of travel, novel in its character, performed by a common man, of but or dinary schooling, of ajourney across the American continent, overland and on foot, accompanied by a horse, wagon, cow and' dog. Perhaps, such a journey will never be taken again; especially, with a prospect of meeting with such impediments as beset his path from the nature of the roads, the means of cross ing unbridged rivers, and the prospect of violence from the beasts of the forest, and the untamed nature Of the Indian. In this volume, no attempt has been made to give a full description of the various States passed through, or an elaborate account of the products of agriculture, mining or manufacturing accom plished in the western wilds of the American nation. Nor has an attempt been made to eloquently describe the habits and cus toms of the people. The story of his travels is told in his own language, as near as possible, to make a continuous narrative. Some of his descriptions of scenes passed through are unique, told in as few common-place words as possible. Particular stress has been given to the conversations with those whom he. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of more than three centuries of Romanov rule in Russia, foreign visitors and residents produced a vast corpus of literature conveying their experiences and impressions of the country. The product of years of painstaking research by one of the world’s foremost authorities on Anglo-Russian relations, In the Lands of the Romanovs is the realization of a major bibliographical project that records the details of over 1200 English-language accounts of the Russian Empire. Ranging chronologically from the accession of Mikhail Fedorovich in 1613 to the abdication of Nicholas II in 1917, this is the most comprehensive bibliography of first-hand accounts of Russia ever to be published. Far more than an inventory of accounts by travellers and tourists, Anthony Cross’s ambitious and wide-ranging work includes personal records of residence in or visits to Russia by writers ranging from diplomats to merchants, physicians to clergymen, gardeners to governesses, as well as by participants in the French invasion of 1812 and in the Crimean War of 1854-56. Providing full bibliographical details and concise but informative annotation for each entry, this substantial bibliography will be an invaluable tool for anyone with an interest in contacts between Russia and the West during the centuries of Romanov rule.

Stewart not only paved the way for women in the west, but also was instrumental in laying the groundwork for the future of Las Vegas.Born in the Midwest in the mid-1800s, uprooted and transplanted as a young girl into the frenzied gold rush days in California, Helen J. Stewart experienced the rigors of pioneer life early. Married at nineteen, mother at twenty, widow at thirty with four children and pregnant with her fifth, she had no time to ponder her fate. Instead, she became a force to reckon with.Sally Zanjani and Carrie Townley Porter chronicle the extraordinary life of a woman dedicated to providing for her family and improving the lives of those around her, a woman ahead of her time who befriended Indians as well as congressmen, a woman who truly was the "First Lady of Las Vegas".

This book was released on 2017-05-29 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late seventeenth century, General Alonso de León led five military expeditions from northern New Spain into what is now Texas in search of French intruders who had settled on lands claimed by the Spanish crown. Lola Orellano Norris has identified sixteen manuscript copies of de León’s meticulously kept expedition diaries. These documents hold major importance for early Texas scholarship. Some of these early manuscripts have been known to historians, but never before have all sixteen manuscripts been studied. In this interdisciplinary study, Norris transcribes, translates, and analyzes the diaries from two different perspectives. The historical analysis reveals that frequent misinterpretations of the Spanish source documents have led to substantial factual errors that have persisted in historical interpretation for more than a century. General Alonso de León’s Expeditions into Texas is the first presentation of these important early documents and provides new vistas on Spanish Texas.
