Such has been the case with Onondaga Lake that only through laws, legal entities, and the public functioning as a system, that the most polluted lake in the country has begun to regenerate. Cutting across the disciplines of history, environmental law and policy, environmental justice, and Federal Indian law, this research demonstrates how government efforts, community involvement, and Native American interests have been integrated into each stage of the remediation process to bring back this cultural and natural resource. The research addresses how the Onondaga Nation lost control of their territory as a result of interactions (some legitimate and some not) with state and federal governments and private citizens acting without authority. It illustrates how this loss, in combination with growing populations and industry, led to the degradation of the environment. Finally, it focuses on the legal actions taken by various stakeholders to address the Lake, specifically the Onondaga Nation's land rights action and the impact of the Lake's being named a Superfund site.

Foreign countries are not merely investing in U.S. corporations but are purchasing them outright: Abu Dhabi bought Citigroup securities, Kuwait purchased a large block Merrill Lynch stock, and China bought Morgan Stanley's convertible securities-and this happened before the September 2008 meltdown of Wall Street. The means by which wealthy foreign states make these purchases are sovereign wealth funds, their surplus capital that they are seeking to invest in order to generate the greatest return. Currently, the largest sovereign wealth funds are held by the United Arab Emirates (of which Abu Dhabi is part), Norway, Singapore, Kuwait, and the People's Republic of China; Qatar and Libya are also in the top ten. The United States has no such fund (although the state of Alaska does). This book takes a close look at China's and Norway's sovereign wealth funds to explain how they work. The author also uses domestic examples (Harvard's endowment, the California's state employees' retirement fund) to propose how the United States could create a sovereign wealth fund, speculating that such a fund could solve the looming Social Security funds shortfall. Sovereign Wealth Funds in Resource Economies explains the fiscal rules and institutional structures that can make SWFs thrive, providing a practical and theoretical guide to their optimal use in resource-revenue management. Khalid Alsweilem and Malan Rietveld put forward an institutional perspective of SWFs as quasi-independent political and economic entities charged with managing national resource wealth, examining both investment and disbursement strategies.
