Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Reefer to Rear-Admiral: Reminiscences and Journal Jottings of Nearly Half a Century of Naval Life For several years prior to the last illness of my father, Rear-Admiral Benjamin F. Sands, the members of our family had urged him to write out his recollections of his naval life, having often enjoyed listening to his descriptions of the incidents of his various cruises. He had preserved copious notes of his service ashore and afloat, in journals and in his letters home, covering his entire career, and from time to time had fully outlined his sketches of particular matters of interest, thus having all his material well in hand. It was, however, only when confined to the house, in 1881, that he yielded to our requests and entered upon the work. In thus living over his life and jotting down incidents at first intended only to entertain and instruct the members of his family, he became more and more interested in his narrative, and with his excellent memory of dates, persons and incidents, supplemented by occasional references to the log-books of the many vessels upon which he had served, his narrative grew into somewhat of a history, though but simply told, of those days of naval service about which so little is known to the readers of to-day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last months of the American Civil War, the upper Texas coast became a hive of blockade running. Though Texas was often considered an isolated backwater in the conflict, the Union's pervasive and systematic seizure of Southern ports left Galveston as one of the only strongholds of foreign imports in the anemic supply chain to embattled Confederate forces. Long, fast steamships ran in and out of the city's port almost every week, bound to and from Cuba. Join author Andrew W. Hall as he explores the story of Texas's Civil War blockade runners--a story of daring, of desperation and, in many cases, of patriotism turning coat to profiteering.

Book excerpt: A DEFINITIVE BUT HIGHLY EXCITING LIFE OF ONE OF THE MOST COLORFUL AND HITHERTO NEGLECTED FIGURES IN AMERICAN HISTORY David Dixon Porter (1813-1891) was a U.S. Navy admiral and a member of one of the most distinguished families in the history of the U.S. Navy. Promoted as the second U.S. Navy officer ever to attain the rank of admiral, Porter helped improve the Navy as the Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy after significant service in the American Civil War. Porter began naval service as a midshipman at the age of 10 under his father, Commodore David Porter, on the frigate U.S.S. John Adams. He served in the Mexican War in the attack on the fort at the City of Vera Cruz, commanded an independent flotilla of mortar boats at the capture of New Orleans, and later advanced to the rank of (acting) rear admiral in command of the Mississippi River Squadron, which co-operated with the army under Maj.-Gen. Ulysses S. Grant in the Vicksburg Campaign. After the fall of Vicksburg, he led the naval forces in the difficult Red River Campaign in Louisiana. Late in 1864, Porter was transferred from the interior to the Atlantic coast, where he led the U.S. Navy in the joint assaults on Fort Fisher, the final significant naval action of the war. Porter worked to raise the standards of the U.S. Navy in the position of Superintendent of the Naval Academy when it was restored to Annapolis. He initiated reforms in the curriculum to increase professionalism. In the early days of President Grant's administration, Porter was de facto Secretary of the Navy. When his adoptive brother David G. Farragut was advanced from rank of vice-admiral to admiral, Porter took his previous position; likewise, when Farragut died, Porter became the second man to hold the newly created rank of admiral. He gathered a corps of like-minded officers devoted to naval reform.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic study examines the deployment of U.S. naval vessels in European and Near Eastern waters from the end of the Civil War until the United States declared war in April 1917. Initially these ships were employed to visit various ports from the Baltic Sea to the eastern Mediterranean and Constantinople (today Istanbul), for the primary purpose of showing the flag. From the 1890s on, most of the need for the presence of the American warships occurred in the eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Unrest in the Ottoman Empire and particularly the Muslim hostility and threats to Armenians led to calls for protection. This would continue into the years of World War I. In 1905, the Navy Department ended the permanent stationing of a squadron in European waters. From then until the U.S. declaration of war in 1917, individual ships, detached units, and special squadrons were at times deployed in European waters. In 1908, the converted yacht Scorpion was sent as station ship (stationnaire) to Constantinople where she would remain, operating in the eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea until 1928. Upon the outbreak of World War I, President Woodrow Wilson ordered cruisers to northern European waters and the Mediterranean to protect American interests. These warships, however, did more than protect American interests. They would evacuate thousands of refugees, American tourists, Armenians, Jews, and Italians after Italy entered the conflict on the side of the Allies.
