Book excerpt: There has been a growing feeling in my mind that "Health" is too small a title with which to introduce a book that sets forth the noblest science that can possibly be formulated. Although health is one of the most desirable conditions in personal life, and one of the most essential, yet it is but one of the ways of Life that are set forth in the book. It appears to me that, "From Existence to Life; the Science of Self-Consciousness" exactly covers the whole field of that which is herein formulated. It is a science for all-round use, health being but one of the many modes of the Principle of All-Knowledge; and, so far as man is concerned, the science of self-consciousness, formulated correctly, and made use of intelligently, should satisfy the mind and comfort the heart in all the emergencies of self-conscious life, enabling a man to "hold on his way and grow stronger and stronger."

Book excerpt: “Who am I?” “From whence am I?” These perennial questions have plagued mystics, philosophers, theologists and scientists since time immemorial. Mankind is still grappling with the mystery of the self and consciousness. And many have given up and declared, “One cannot know!” This book unravels the mystery of the self and consciousness, and elucidates it in a comprehensive fashion supported by scientific research. An explanation is provided about the state of enlightenment, which mystics have attempted to expound in the absence of modern empirical knowledge. Upon the discovery of one’s real nature, the pressure of living ceases to exist and the conflict within subsides. Disturbing questions regarding love and relationships, behaviour and morality, and the search for enlightenment are investigated and resolved in such a manner to remove the burden they impose. This publication does not propose to change you, rather it questions the concept of self. Who is this ‘you’? It highlights that the focus should be elsewhere and offers a new perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a question that may seem, at once, simple yet profoundly complicated: What is consciousness? And from where in the body, or mind, does it arise? In his work, esteemed Harvard scholar Simeon Locke, M.D. brings us the debate over substance and source in consciousness, and offers what he sees as the resolution to this debate, with accessible text explaining the neurologist's thinking on how to define, measure and explain consciousness, from a variety of field's perspectives. Efforts to understand consciousness - perhaps the supreme manifestation of self-consciousness - continue. Books are written. Predictions are made. Physicists, psychologists, biologists, and philosophers participate. The brain is studied, but an understanding of consciousness eludes us, explains Locke. Still, the quest continues. We are not looking in the wrong place, for surely consciousness is a function of the nervous system. But we may be looking for the wrong thing, Locke adds. Quest implies we are looking for something, and consciousness is not a something. It is a process, or so-called distributed function of the brain. In this work, Locke explains how the nervous system plays a primary role in consciousness. Although scholars and scientists have debated the source of consciousness for more than a century, advances in brain science have brought the question to the forefront now, launching events from the Toward a Science of Consciousness convention in 2006, to the 11th Annual Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness convention in 2007. Across the nation, scholars and students are working to determine answers about consciousness, at sites from California's John F. Kennedy University degree program in Consciousness and Transformative Studies, to Vermont's Goddard College degree program in Consciousness Studies. And in this work, a patriarch in the field of Neurology explains his science and its vital role in consciousness, and how it makes us human.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does the universe exist and what are you supposed to do in it? This question has been addressed by religions since time immemorial, but popular answers often fail to account for obvious aspects of reality. Indeed, if God knows everything, why do we need to learn through pain and suffering? If God is omnipotent, why are we needed to do good? If the universe is fundamentally good, why are wars, crime, and injustice all around us? In modern society, orthodox science takes the rational high-ground and tackles these contradictions by denying the very need for, and the existence of, meaning. Indeed, many of us implicitly accept the notion that rationality somehow contradicts spirituality. That is a modern human tragedy, not only for its insidiousness, but for the fact that it is simply not true. In this book, the author constructs a coherent and logical argument for the meaning of existence, informed by science itself. A framework is laid out wherein all aspects of human existence have a logical, coh

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A long history of inquiry about human nature and the self stretches from the ancient tradition of Socratic self-knowledge in the context of ethical life to contemporary discussions of brain function in cognitive science. It begins with a conflict among the ancients. On one view, which comes to be represented most clearly by Aristotle, the issue is settled in terms of a composite and very complex human nature. Who I am is closely tied to my embodied existence. The other view, found as early as the Pythagoreans, and developed in the writings of Plato, Augustine and Descartes, held that genuine humanness is not the result of an integration of 'lower' functions, but a purification of those functions in favour of a liberating spirituality. The animal elements are excluded from the human essence. The modern debate on the problem of the self, although owing much to the insights of Locke and Hume, can still be situated within the context of the two schools of ancient thought, and this has led many to despair over the lack of apparent progress in this problem. Today, of course, we often tend to look to science rather than philosophy to develop our understanding of a wide range of fundamental issues. To what extent is the problem of the self a scientific issue? Can insights from the study of neuropsychology and cognitive development in infancy provide a new perspective? Can the study of schizophrenia and dissociative identity disorders tell us anything about the nature of human self-consciousness? Many would answer yes to the above questions, but then is it not also the case that the study of exceptional 'self-actualised' human experience is equally relevant? And can the phenomenological tradition, dedicated to the systematic study of human experience, and contemporary analytic approaches in philosophy help us out of some of the impasses that have bedevilled the empiricist tradition? MODELS OF THE SELF includes all these perspectives in an attempt to cast light on one of the most intractable problems in science and the humanities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the meaning of religion within the scientific, evidence-based history of our known past since the big bang. While our current major religions are only centuries or millennia old, our volume discusses the origins and development of human religious practice and belief over our species’ existence of 300,000 years. The volume also connects the scientific approach to natural and social history with ancient truths of our religious ancestors using new lines of inquiry, new technologies, new modes of expression, and new concepts. It brings together insights of natural scientists, social scientists, philosophers, writers, and theologians to discuss narratives of the universe. The essays discuss that to apprehend religion scientifically, or to interpret and explain science theologically, the subject must be examined through a variety of disciplinary lenses simultaneously and raise several theoretical, philosophical, and moral problems. With a singular investigation into the meaning of religion in the context of the 13.8 billion-year history of our universe, this book will be indispensable for scholars and students of religious studies, big history, sociology and social anthropology, philosophy, and science and technology studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mind of Consciousness The Mind of Consciousness is a book unfolding a new way, with new process methods to evaluate your existence. It is an experiential work written in textbook format that analytically delineates how and why consciousness and mind interface and function, exposing the inter-connective dependency of non-biological consciousness and the biologically created mind. Knowing how that interconnectivity interrelates provides avenues of exploration that reveal the fundamental nature of existence, unveiling an innate purpose and direction embedded within consciousness. This book works through all the major questions of existence, using reproducible and experiential logic, allowing everyone to experience the results of that exploration. Throughout your life you have two realities at war with one another: the primary ‘I am’ reality, formed from non-biological consciousness, and the secondary ‘I am this or that’ reality, formed by the biological mind. You may not be aware of, or even appreciate, the internal conflict these two inter-connective and inter-dependent realities create. However, you experience the resultant turmoil and confusion their subliminal battles establish by not having an experiential appreciation of how those realities are formed, function and potentially control your life. The text delineates causation for those ongoing internal battles and outlines processes to help overcome the sense of frustration, isolation and discord they generate. This experiential method of examination creates empirical processes that afford you the opportunity to make an informed choice, rather than a conditioned reaction: providing a more secure, productive, directional and enjoyable life. This book takes you into the core of your being, turning it inside out, exposing who and what you are by revealing a self-created shadow-world controlling your life without you being aware that control exists.

We are taking our knowledge beyond mere intellectual curiosity, and using it for very practical applications. We are using this knowledge to become Masters of Ourselves. Knowing Your Purpose and Mastering Your Mind This book will also guide you to the Purpose of Life. We explain the Universal Purpose, which applies to all humans. We then show how to discover your own Specific Purpose. We will further discuss how we should operate here on earth. This includes the practical methods for claiming the Inner Light, and developing our Soul Powers. These are just a few examples. Throughout the book we provide practical applications of this knowledge. We can then combine this knowledge to fully Master our Existence. Transforming our World: Begins with This Book The ultimate goal of the book, and indeed the entire book series, is to bring humanity to a New Level of Existence. This is our destiny. Transforming our world to the new era must begin with the deep understanding of Soul, Consciousness, and the Hidden Realities. We must understand all of these details as the foundation for all other actions. Of course, there are many practical steps to take; yet we must first understand the metaphysical realities, to enact all other practical transformations. The entire series of books will describe these topics in extensive detail. It is in this first book, that we provide the summaries of all concepts, and the answers to your questions. The first book in the series is a Grand Summary. Thus: this book is the abridged version of the series. It is the collection of the best wisdom.

This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: Sin fitbltr. Itoo. CHAPTER V. PRELIMINARY TRAINING FOR THE CURE OF SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS. In every branch of human effort, careful and prudent training is essential to secure good results. The bigger the aim in view the greater the necessity for a thorough grasp of fundamentals, and for careful graduated training. The self- conscious person is not exempt from this necessity: if he wishes to get rid of his trouble he must make up his mind to submit to preliminary training before attacking in earnest his particular form of self-consciousness. SECTION TWENTY-EIGHT. THE FIRST STAGE. In Part Two it has been shown that fear is the root cause of self-consciousness, hence the first stage in the cure of self-consciousness must concern itself with the initial action towards the control of fear. I use the word control with purpose, for it is impossible to prevent fear from entering consciousness; it is an emotion?an innate tendency?and liable to arise from numerous stimuli. Fear must be recognized?it cannot be ignored. Fear is a tremendous force in life; it can destroy, but it can also create; it unlocks hidden sources of power, and forces us to make the attempt to use them. This will be clear to you when you reflect that the correlate instinct offear is flight. Now flight is really a call to action, a putting forth of all our activity to escape from that which causes us to fear. We must ask the self-conscious person to dwell a little upon this idea of fear being a force. Try to grasp that it is a call to action, a call to put forth energy. Remember that flight is not the sole channel of activity; the call is to all the powers of our organism. This is seen at once when there is a check to flight; at once the fighting instincts are aroused, and we give battle. // victory cr...
