Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1 (A), University of Marburg (Institute for Anglistics/ American Studies), course: PS Introduction to the Early 19th Century Novel, language: English, abstract: It is a truth universally acknowledged that Helen Fielding did not invent the plot of her novel Bridget Jones’s Diary, which was first published in 1996, all by herself. When asked about it in an online chat session, Fielding admits that she “shamelessly stole the plot” of Pride and Prejudice, written by Jane Austen (n.pag.). Bridget Jones’s Diary received great praise from critics in the United Kingdom and beyond. In 1999, Fielding published a sequel called Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason. A highly anticipated film adaptation entered cinemas in 2001, and soon became very successful. Even though Jane Austen’s novel was published nearly two hundred years earlier than Fielding’s, its plot still seems to be relevant to a turn-of-the-millennium readership. What parallels are there between the two novels and their heroines? In how far are Elizabeth and Bridget children of their time? What changes did Fielding consider necessary when taking Pride and Prejudice into the late 20th century? These questions will be answered in this paper. [...]

Book excerpt: Against the background of Socrates' insight that the unexamined life is not worth living, Reading Our Lives: The Poetics of Growing Old investigates the often overlooked inside dimensions of aging. Despite popular portrayals of mid- and later life as entailing inevitable decline, this book looks at aging as, potentially, a process of poiesis: a creative endeavor of fashioning meaning from the ever-accumulating texts - memories and reflections-that constitute our inner worlds. At its center is the conviction that although we are constantly reading our lives to some degree anyway, doing so in a mindful matter is critical to our development in the second half of life.Drawing on research in numerous disciplines affected by the so-called narrative turn - including cognitive psychology, neuroscience, and the psychology of aging - authors Randall and McKim articulate a vision of aging that promises to accommodate such time-honored concepts as wisdom and spirituality: one that understands aging as a matter not merely of getting old but of consciously growing old.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The amount of fan-generated content about Jane Austen and her novels has long surpassed the author’s original canon. Adaptations like Clueless, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Jane Austen’s Fight Club, and The Lizzie Bennet Diaries have given Austen fans priceless opportunities to enjoy the classic texts anew, and continue to bring new and younger fans into the fold. Now, through online culture, the amount and type of fan-created works has exponentially multiplied in recent years. Fans write stories, create art, make videos, and craft memes, all in homage to one of the most celebrated authors of all time. This book explores online fan spaces in search of “Janeites” all over the world to discover what fans are making, how fans are sharing their work, and why it matters that so many women and nonbinary individuals find a haven not only in Jane Austen, but also in Jane Austen fandom. In relatable chapters based on firsthand experience, the authors explore how Austen fandom has and continues to build communities around women, people of color, and the LGBTQ+ community. Whether Janeites are shrewdly picking up on the latent sexual tension between women in Emma or casting people of color in leading roles, Luetkenhaus and Weinstein argue that Austen fans are particularly adept at marrying fantasy and feminism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An intelligent and generous companion to Pride and Prejudice: its author and her era, characters, language, reception, [and] adaptations.” —Sydney Morning Herald Pride and Prejudice has a fair claim to being the world’s favorite novel. Read and studied from Cheltenham to China, it’s been translated into many languages and made into countless films. This book, from longtime Jane Austen Society of Australia president Susannah Fullerton, describes how Austen wrote her masterpiece, its lukewarm initial reception, and its evolving popularity. As well as discussing sex-symbol Mr. Darcy, charming heroine Elizabeth Bennet, and the superb range of comic characters, she discusses the novel’s style: its wicked irony, brilliant structuring, and revolutionary use of the technique known as “free indirect speech.” Readers through the years have both loved the book and hated it, and the reactions of writers, politicians, artists, and explorers can tell us as much about the reader as they do about the book itself. Pride and Prejudice has morphed into many strange and interesting forms: screen adaptations, sequels, prequels, and updates. Happily Ever After explores these—and the wilder shores of zombies, porn, dating manuals, T-shirts, tourism, and therapy. “[The illustrations are] as much fun as the text.” —Star-Tribune “An enjoyable and loyally enthusiastic tribute . . . contains thoughtful plot and character summaries useful for orienting the school student, and is full of trivia for Austen enthusiasts (the term ‘Janeites’ was coined in 1884).” —Times Literary Supplement

Book excerpt: World literature is full of great love stories, but there are few that make it through the centuries and are as well-known and loved today as they were decades ago. One of those stories that have the ability to leave an everlasting impression is Jane Austen’s best-known and probably most famous novel Pride and Prejudice (1813). Its appeal to literary posteriority lies in the astonishing emotional impact of a seemingly simple story: A clever girl and a mysterious man, destined for one another, loathe each other from the very beginning because of wrong first impression and bad influence from others. They gradually have to overcome these obstacles in order to recognise the nobility of each other’s characters and find happiness together. From Austen’s contemporary writing and its scarce possibilities for women writers on to the emancipation of the female author up until the possibilities for women novelists in the lately developing genre labelled chick lit – Pride and Prejudice still continues to fascinate readers and writers alike. This book sets out to examine how Austen’s formula was put to use to yield three contemporary works of British fiction; Kate Fenton’s Lions and Liquorice (1995), Helen Fielding’s Bridget Jones’s Diary (1996) and Melissa Nathan’s Pride, Prejudice and Jasmin Field (2000) and what transformations it has experienced in the process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of literature on screen is a growing area of study in schools and universities. Many students have to produce critical essays comparing the novel and film versions of a particular text. The Screen Adaptations series offers a wealth of study material: from the literary context of the original work, through to thought-provoking comparisons of the screen versions, critical commentary and the afterlife of the films. Pride and Prejudice is a classic piece of literature and any new adaptation is a major event. With several well-known TV and film versions available (featuring stars such as Keira Knightley) as well as a Bollywood version, discussions around how these films interpret the story, themes and characters is a popular classroom choice for students and teachers alike. This new title in the Screen Adaptations series, provides a rich source of material to help students understand and write about the reciprocal relationship between film and literature. It offers in-depth analysis of the various screen versions and alternative `readings' as well as critical insight and an interview with writer Andrew Davies, best known for his 1995 BBC adaptation. Following from Shakespeare, Jane Austen on screen is now an established part of literary studies and the volume will conclude with a survey of the growing body of literature in the field.
