Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an updated and expanded edition of a text that has been used in navigation courses for 30 years. It covers practical small-craft navigation (sail, power, or paddle), starting from the basics and ending with all that is needed to navigate safely and efficiently on inland and coastal waters in all weather conditions. It is for beginners, starting from scratch, or for more seasoned mariners who wish to expand their skills. Topics include: Charts, Chart Reading, and Chart Plotting Instruments and Logbook Procedures Compass Use Piloting and Dead Reckoning Lights and Buoyage Tides and Currents Rules of the Road GPS and other Electronic Aids The GPS tells us where we are and how fast we are moving in what direction, but it can never tell us the safest, most efficient route to our destination. That fundamental task requires the basic navigation skills taught in this book, which we can use as well to check the GPS underway, and then be prepared to navigate without the GPS if we need to. The hallmark of good seamanship is to look ahead and be prepared. The text covers not only the long tested traditional methods of navigation but also the efficient use of the latest technology in electronic navigation and charting.

Book excerpt: "The guide describes how dedicated environmental monitoring and adaptive management during dredging, port and waterway construction works can help avoid or minimize unwanted, detrimental effects to coastal plant habitats. State-of-the-art methodologies for assessment of impacts are described along with their practical application. Techniques to minimise, mitigate and/or compensate impacts are assessed with respect to their practicality, effectiveness and relevance around coastal plant habitats. Ways to restore and enhance these vital habitats – through applying principles of 'Working with Nature' (e.g. beneficial reuse of dredged material) – are also described. The guidelines are based on a review of available literature and practical experience in managing the environmental aspects of dredging, port and waterway construction activities around coastal plant habitats".--Introduction

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inland Waterway (IW), or river vessels are in every respect different from the seagoing ships. The professional literature is mostly focused on conventional seagoing fleets, leaving a gap in the documentation of design practices for IW vessels. The principal attribute that differentiates river vessels from the seagoing ships is the low, or shallow, draught due to water depth restrictions. This book addresses key aspects for the design of contemporary, shallow draught IW vessels for the transport of dry cargo (containers and bulk cargo). Most of the logic that is presented is applicable to the design of river vessels for any river, but the material that is presented is focused on vessels for the River Danube and its tributaries. The term ‘contemporary river vessel’ assumes that the present-day technology and current Danube river infrastructure are taken into consideration in its design. It is believed that the technologies and concepts that are proposed here are applicable for all new vessel designs for the next 10 to 15 years. Other innovative technologies should be considered for designs beyond that horizon. Moreover, nowadays contemporary IW vessel must be in harmony with the Environmentally Sustainable Transport (EST) policies and hence special attention is paid to both ecology and efficiency. Note however that shipowners and ship operators usually tend to choose the conventional cost-effective transport technologies. Given that potential divergence of interests, the concepts and technologies treated here may be regarded as innovative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the clearest, most fully illustrated version of the navigation rules that every captain must have on board—in fact, boats 12 meters (or 39 feet) and longer are required to carry a copy. For years, the United States Coast Guard has produced a guide to operating vessels safely and lawfully in both international and inland waters. But its language is legalistic, complex, and not always very comprehensible. Chapman’s easy-to-read edition has exactly the same information, but with additional illuminating commentary by Editor-at-Large Dan Fales; an explanation of many of the rules in simple, lucid detail; and advice on real-world application. With eight more illustrations than the Coast Guard’s book, the manual looks better than ever, too. No matter whether you navigate a small sailboat, motorboat, or spacious yacht, you won’t want to head onto the water without it.

Book excerpt: Congress has made the U.S. Coast Guard responsible for safeguarding vessel traffic on the nation's coastal and inland waterways. The fleet of vessels the Coast Guard inspects for safety reasons recently doubled because the agency is now responsible for inspecting tugs and towboats that push or pull barges (towing vessels), in addition to ships. In June 2016 the Coast Guard issued a final rule on this matter. The Coast Guard is now considering an hours-of-service limit for crews working on towing vessels in an effort to reduce accidents caused by fatigue and is reevaluating the crewing requirements for certain seagoing barges. These potential changes are controversial and could raise the cost of transporting petroleum and chemical products by barge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inland & Maritime Waterways & Ports: Design, Construction, and Operation covers the proceedings of the technical sessions in the 25th Permanent International Association of Navigation Congress, held in Scotland. This book is organized into two sections encompassing 10 chapters. The first section deals first with means for the protection of banks and bottom waterways against the attack by currents and waves, including those generated by ships. These topics are followed by discussions on methods of increasing waterways capacity and safety; sedimentation reduction and improving and maintaining navigable depths in alluvial channels; integration of ocean-coastal-inland navigation; and improvements of maritime ports and inland terminals. The second section starts with discussions of the developments in the construction of ships, navigational aids, waterways and harbors, traffic management and installations, with particular emphasis on risk analysis and safety criteria regarding transportation, unloading, and storage of liquefied natural and petroleum gases. Other topics covered in this section include economic optimization of the whole dredging cycle; cargo handling systems and equipment; design and construction of port facilities and arrangement of quay platforms; and coastal erosion caused by harbor works and corrective measures. This book will prove useful to design and navigation engineers and researchers.
