The list of topics in which Lax made fundamental and long-lasting contributions is remarkable: scattering theory, solitons, shock waves, and even classical analysis, to name a few. His work has been honored many times, including the Abel Prize in 2005. The book concludes with an account of his most important mathematical contributions, made accessible without heavy prerequisites. Reuben Hersh has written extensively on mathematics. His book with Philip Davis, The Mathematical Experience, won the National Book Award in science. Hersh is emeritus professor of mathematics at the University of New Mexico.

This saw the arrest of many Abwehr officials and the execution of Canaris and Oster. In this penetrating study of the final years of the Abwehr, Nigel West, a world-renowned specialist in the field, pieces together the gradual decline in the organization’s role and importance with Hitler and his acolytes paying little heed to reports that were increasingly cautionary. Among the many previously undisclosed stories are details gleaned from recently opened files which tell of a hitherto unknown spy-swap. This was the exchange of Berthold Shulze-Holthus, a German spy detained in Iran, for Ferdinand Rodriguez, a British radio operator captured in France. This was the only such exchange that took place during the whole of the Second World War – though the fact that the swap took place at all suggests that a previously unsuspected degree of communication existed between the Allies and Nazi Germany. Perhaps most tantalizingly of all, is the new night light thrown upon the role the British Secret Intelligence Service, MI6, had, in league with the Abwehr, in the Valkyrie bombing which almost killed Hitler.

His parents joined him in 1938. At the outbreak of the war, Boucher and his wife Hilde lived in Rotterdam; they were evicted from there and went to stay with relatives in Enschede. In September 1942 the Bouchers and their relatives went into hiding, mainly with Akke and Tjeerd van der Zee in the town of Sneek, Friesland, until the liberation. Boucher praises the many Righteous Gentiles who rescued him and his family. The Bouchers emigrated to the USA in 1947. Pp. 103-109 contain an interview with Tjeerd van der Zee conducted by Boucher in 1982. Pp. 113-136 present photographs and documents relating to the memoirs. Pp. 137-177 contain stories of the experiences of family and friends, some of whom survived the Holocaust while others perished.
