Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two Elephants in the Matchbox is the story of Jana, a young boy aspiring to be an athlete from an early age, growing from the influence of British colonisation under the torturous regime of Sri Lanka in the seventies. He comes from a brave family of Dutch-Delft patriots, intellectuals who fought historical wars with invaders from the north island regions. His love of cricket and middle distance running is marred by the death of his close relatives. His sporting dream shattered, and on the verge of losing his father from a war-related illness and his mother from an accident, Jana decides to leave the paradise island. His father's dream of seeing his grandchildren will never be fulfilled... Based on the true controversial political events in Sri Lanka in the late seventies, Two Elephants in the Matchbox tells the story of Tamil uprising. The conflicts Jana faced in his home and the streets, witnessing torture and deaths will haunt him forever, but he still keeps the dream for that podium spot in his life back in the UK... Sathajanan was born in Sri Lanka but now lives in London, where he works as a nurse. He is actively involved in ending the suffering of Tamils by peaceful means, to raise awareness of recent ethnic war crimes committed against them. He is also interested in promoting art and culture within the Diaspora communities in London. Two Elephants in the Matchbox is his first novel.

Book excerpt: This book examines the Sinhala pilgrimage tradition both from Sinhala and non-Sinhala sources, and explains the cult to Saman, the white elephant, and its relation to Adam's Peak. Adam's Peak in Sri Lanka is one of the five places where Gautama Buddha left the trace of his foot, but it is also an important place of pilgrimage for Muslims, Hindus and some Christians. The Hindus regard it as the footprint of Lord Shiva; the Muslims think that the first man, Adam, planted his foot on the summit of the mountain when he was thrown out of paradise, and some Christians

Book excerpt: Why Elephants Cry is a fascinating frolic through the literature and evidence surrounding the use of unusual behavior of animals to measure and predict the environment. The role of animals, from the smallest ant to the biggest elephant, as predictors of environmental changes is framed around the climate crisis, which highlights the increasingly important part that animals will have to play in the future. Renowned biologist Professor John T. Hancock collects anecdotal stories and myths along with scientific evidence, demonstrating that observation of animals can be of tangible use. He looks at the measurement of the air temperature using ants, crickets and snakes, and goes on to assess the evidence that the observation of a wide range of animals can predict the weather or the imminent eruption of volcanoes and earthquakes. Evidence of animals being able to predict lunar and solar events, such as lunar cycles and the Northern Lights, is also considered. This is the only time that all this literature has been brought together in one place, a fascinating reference for anybody interested in animals and the environment. The book is also an ideal supplementary textbook for students studying animal behaviour.

Book excerpt: The new seventh edition of Bradt's Sri Lanka remains the most detailed and comprehensive guidebook to this alluring island nation. Written by Philip Briggs, one of the world's most experienced and highly regarded guidebook writers, this thoroughly updated guide provides detailed coverage of every aspect of this diverse and compact country, from idyllic tropical coastlines to mist-shrouded tea plantations and time-warped colonial homesteads. Alongside in-depth sections on all major beach resorts, archaeological sites, historic towns and national parks, it introduces adventurous travellers to intriguing lesser-known sites and emergent destinations inaccessible for decades prior to 2009, when the civil war ended. Beach holidays are a year-round attraction, while fantastic Buddhist-affiliated UNESCO World Heritage Sites range from the massive dagobas of Anuradhapura, built in pre-Christian times on a scale rivalling Egyptian pyramids, to Dambulla’s exquisitely painted cave temples. Wildlife-viewing opportunities abound, and this guide provides unparalleled, illustrated advice on making the most of these. Asia's densest elephant and leopard populations thrive in an extensive network of national parks, complemented by fine whale and dolphin-watching, and 450 bird species including 30 occurring in no other country. Extensive hotel and restaurant listings, covering everything from exclusive boutique hotels to shoestring homestays, have been cherry-picked based on the author’s personal inspection of hundreds of properties countrywide. Sri Lanka’s increasingly renowned cuisine features strongly, as does its growing focus on wellness tourism including Ayurveda therapies. This guidebook differs further from competitors by catering for truly independent travellers, providing 70-plus visitor-focused maps covering all major towns and resorts, clear directions for public transport, and off-the-beaten-track information. Following a tourist boom in the south, and the gradual opening of the north and east to independent travel, tourism jumped 15% in the two years to 2018. Following COVID-19 and a 2019 terrorism incident, Sri Lankan tourism is again welcoming visitors, with infrastructure benefitting from recent investment in trains, which provide comfortable, efficient and inexpensive public transport. Whether you’re into wildlife, culture, beaches or cuisine – and whether you seek luxury or budget travel – Bradt’s Sri Lanka will address your every need for an enjoyable visit to this bewitching and varied country.
