Book excerpt: What does a codependent say to his mate when he wakes up? "Good morning, how am I?" --Overheard at a Codependents Anonymous meeting Throughout the world today, more than two million alcoholics and hundreds of thousands of drug addicts, compulsive overeaters, sex addicts, compulsive gamblers, codependents, and other addicts abstain from their addiction, having found a new life by practicing the 12-step program of recovery developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. Over the years, their practices have evolved into a way of life--the 12-Step Culture. "I don't remember my first meeting, but I've been told that I talked for a really long time." --Mary, a member of Narcotics Anonymous AA to Z is the first book to document the richness and diversity of the lives of recovering people and to provide an encyclopedic look at this unique subculture. Less self-help than enlightenment and entertainment, AA to Z is comprised of real-life stories of recovering addicts as well as an "addictionary" of recovery terminology. Everything from the well-known slogan "One Day at a Time" to more esoteric terms like "pigeon" (a lovingly insulting term for a newcomer to the program) and "Wharf Rats" (sober Deadheads) is explained with clarity, insight, and humor. "How it works, you ask--slowly and well." --Cooper, a member of Alcoholics Anonymous Conversational, witty, and engaging, AA to Z is a must-have for all 12-step participants and their loved ones, and it offers the uninitiated a fascinating firsthand look at one of the most influential yet least-documented cultural movements of our time.
Book Synopsis The Theory of H(b) Spaces: Volume 2 by : Emmanuel Fricain
Download or read book The Theory of H(b) Spaces: Volume 2 written by Emmanuel Fricain and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An H(b) space is defined as a collection of analytic functions that are in the image of an operator. The theory of H(b) spaces bridges two classical subjects, complex analysis and operator theory, which makes it both appealing and demanding. Volume 1 of this comprehensive treatment is devoted to the preliminary subjects required to understand the foundation of H(b) spaces, such as Hardy spaces, Fourier analysis, integral representation theorems, Carleson measures, Toeplitz and Hankel operators, various types of shift operators and Clark measures. Volume 2 focuses on the central theory. Both books are accessible to graduate students as well as researchers: each volume contains numerous exercises and hints, and figures are included throughout to illustrate the theory. Together, these two volumes provide everything the reader needs to understand and appreciate this beautiful branch of mathematics.
Book Synopsis Why Can't Church Be More Like an AA Meeting? by : Stephen R. Haynes
Download or read book Why Can't Church Be More Like an AA Meeting? written by Stephen R. Haynes and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2021-10-26 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do Christians need recovery? Or is recovery something needed by the church itself? Addiction—whether to a substance or to a behavior—is a problem within faith communities, just like it is everywhere else. But because churches are rarely experienced as safe places for dealing with addiction, co-addiction, or the legacy of family dysfunction, Christians tend to seek recovery from these conditions in Twelve-Step fellowships. Once they become accustomed to the ethos of vulnerability, acceptance, and healing that these fellowships provide, however, they are often left feeling that the church has failed them, with many asking: why can’t church be more like an AA meeting? Inspired by his own quest to find in church the sort of mutual support and healing he discovered in Twelve-Step fellowships, Stephen Haynes explores the history of Alcoholics Anonymous and its relationship to American Christianity. He shows that, while AA eventually separated from the Christian parachurch movement out of which it emerged, it retained aspects of Christian experience that the church itself has largely lost: comfort with brokenness and vulnerability, an emphasis on honesty and transparency, and suspicion toward claims to piety and respectability. Haynes encourages Christians to reclaim these distinctive elements of the Twelve-Step movement in the process of “recovering church.” He argues that this process must begin with he calls “Step 0,” which, as he knows from personal experience, can be the hardest step: the admission that, despite appearances, we are not fine.

Book Synopsis Concepts in Surface Physics by : M-C. Desjonqueres
Download or read book Concepts in Surface Physics written by M-C. Desjonqueres and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook is intended as an introduction to surface science for graduate students. It began as a course of lectures that we gave at the University of Paris (Orsay). Its main objectives are twofold: to provide the reader with a compre hensive presentation of the basic principles and concepts of surface physics and to show the usefulness of these concepts in the real world by referring to experiments. It starts at a rather elementary level since it only requires a knowledge of solid state physics, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics and statistical physics which does not exceed the background usually taught to students early in their university courses. However, since it finally reaches an advanced level, we have tried to render it as self-contained as possible so that it remains accessible even to an unexperienced reader. Furthermore, the emphasis has been put on a pedagogical level rather than on a technical level. In this spirit, whenever possible, models which are simplified, but which contain the features that are essential to the appearance of the phenomena, have been set up and solved in a completely analytical way. The logic should be transparent enough for the reader although, most often, a more rigorous solution would need the use of a computer. To conclude, we have tried to give an account of surface physics which should be of use to the theoretician as well as to the experimentalist. The following comments can be made on the contents of this book.

Download or read book Cell-to-Cell Mapping written by C.S. Hsu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, I have been interested in global analysis of nonlinear systems. The original interest stemmed from the study of snap-through stability and jump phenomena in structures. For systems of this kind, where there exist multiple stable equilibrium states or periodic motions, it is important to examine the domains of attraction of these responses in the state space. It was through work in this direction that the cell-to-cell mapping methods were introduced. These methods have received considerable development in the last few years, and have also been applied to some concrete problems. The results look very encouraging and promising. However, up to now, the effort of developing these methods has been by a very small number of people. There was, therefore, a suggestion that the published material, scattered now in various journal articles, could perhaps be pulled together into book form, thus making it more readily available to the general audience in the field of nonlinear oscillations and nonlinear dynamical systems. Conceivably, this might facilitate getting more people interested in working on this topic. On the other hand, there is always a question as to whether a topic (a) holds enough promise for the future, and (b) has gained enough maturity to be put into book form. With regard to (a), only the future will tell. With regard to (b), I believe that, from the point of view of both foundation and methodology, the methods are far from mature.

Book Synopsis Sex Bias in Autoimmunity: From Animal Models to Clinical Research and Applications by : Coziana Ciurtin
Download or read book Sex Bias in Autoimmunity: From Animal Models to Clinical Research and Applications written by Coziana Ciurtin and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-01-17 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autoimmune diseases are characterized by an abnormal and self-directed immune response leading to damage and dysfunction of multiple organs and tissues. Most autoimmune diseases are recognized as affecting disproportionately more women than men, suggesting a crucial role of sex hormones in modulating immune responses, with estrogens being postulated as enhancing autoimmunity and androgens playing a protective role. It is also widely acknowledged that there is an overwhelming male bias in non-human (animal) studies of autoimmune diseases, while studies of both sexes in human research frequently fail to analyze results by sex. Underrepresentation of females in animal models of autoimmune disease is often justified by their intrinsic variability during the reproductive period, compromising the understanding of impact of the female sex chromosome and hormones on immune system functions leading to the high prevalence of autoimmune conditions. This Research Topic will highlight the most recent advances in understanding the possible mechanisms for sex-specific differences in autoimmunity, with a specific focus on pre-clinical animal and human models of autoimmune inflammation, as well as on the most common sex specific differences in autoimmune diseases. The topic will emphasize advances in research exploring sex determinants in autoimmune rheumatic diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthritis, psoriatic arthritis, Sjӧgren's syndrome and further diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, autoimmune hepatitis, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, asthma and more. The present Research Topic will include both full length and short research communications, as well as perspective and review articles addressing various aspects of sex biased differences in pathogenesis, age at disease onset, clinical manifestations, disease course, treatment response, associated co-morbidities and overall survival across different autoimmune diseases.
