Book Synopsis The Friendship Doll by : Kirby Larson
Download or read book The Friendship Doll written by Kirby Larson and published by Yearling. This book was released on 2012-05-08 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am Miss Kanagawa. In 1927, my 57 doll-sisters and I were sent from Japan to America as Ambassadors of Friendship. Our work wasn't all peach blossoms and tea cakes. My story will take you from New York to Oregon, during the Great Depression. Though few in this tale are as fascinating as I, their stories won't be an unpleasant diversion. You will make the acquaintance of Bunny, bent on revenge; Lois, with her head in the clouds; Willie Mae, who not only awakened my heart, but broke it; and Lucy, a friend so dear, not even war could part us. I have put this tale to paper because from those 58 Friendship Dolls only 45 remain. I know that someone who chooses this book is capable of solving the mystery of the missing sisters. Perhaps that someone is you.

Book excerpt: A warm, gorgeous exploration of a little girl's experience immigrating to a new country and missing her home and her grandmother, who still lives far away. Sakura's dad gets a new job in America, so she and her parents make the move from their home in Japan. When she arrives in the States, most of all she misses her grandmother and the cherry blossom trees, under which she and her grandmother used to play and picnic. She wonders how she'll ever feel at home in this new place, with its unfamiliar language and landscape. One day, she meets her neighbor, a boy named Luke, and begins to feel a little more settled. When her grandmother becomes ill, though, her family takes a trip back to Japan. Sakura is sad when she returns to the States and once again reflects on all she misses. Luke does his best to cheer her up -- and tells her about a surprise he knows she'll love, but she'll have to wait till spring. In the meantime, Sakura and Luke's friendship blooms and finally, when spring comes, Luke takes her to see the cherry blossom trees flowering right there in her new neighborhood. Sakura's Cherry Blossoms captures the beauty of the healing power of friendship through Weston's Japanese poetry-inspired text and Saburi's breathtaking illustrations.

Download or read book Ship of Dolls written by Shirley Parenteau and published by Candlewick Press. This book was released on 2014-08-05 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can a ship carrying Friendship Dolls to Japan be Lexie’s ticket to see her fun-loving mother again? A heartwarming historical novel inspired by a little-known true event. It’s 1926, and the one thing eleven-year-old Lexie Lewis wants more than anything is to leave Portland, Oregon, where she has been staying with her strict grandparents, and rejoin her mother, a carefree singer in San Francisco’s speakeasies. But Mama’s new husband doesn’t think a little girl should live with parents who work all night and sleep all day. Meanwhile, Lexie’s class has been raising money to ship a doll to the children of Japan in a friendship exchange, and when Lexie learns that the girl who writes the best letter to accompany the doll will be sent to the farewell ceremony in San Francisco, she knows she just has to be the winner. But what if a jealous classmate and Lexie’s own small lies to her grandmother manage to derail her plans? Inspired by a project organized by teacher-missionary Sidney Gulick, in which U.S. children sent more than 12,000 Friendship Dolls to Japan in hopes of avoiding a future war, Shirley Parenteau’s engaging story has sure appeal for young readers who enjoy historical fiction, and for doll lovers of all ages.

Book Synopsis In Praise of Friendship by : Michał Herer
Download or read book In Praise of Friendship written by Michał Herer and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2021-02-26 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are living in the age of decline, or at least crisis, of what might be called a ‘culture of friendship’. Our existence as social beings is constricted in a triangle whose three apices are: the alienated work, subjected to the principle of ruthless competition, the closed, isolated nuclear family and the national or ‘cultural’ community constituted in the act of aggression towards a common enemy (the ‘alien’). It is precisely this constriction that makes the culture of friendship decline, and vice versa: it is this decline that seems to make any other way of life increasingly harder to imagine. However, if we are to resist the temptation of returning to the logic of clashing, violent particularisms and defend ourselves against fascist or fascistoid tendencies that appear on the political horizon, some kind of opening must occur, we must once again be able to experiment with new forms of being together, despite divisions resulting from territorial and cultural identities or family relations. What we need is a renaissance of the culture of friendship. Originally published in Poland, this edition from Zero Books is the first English language publication of In Praise of Friendship.

Book Synopsis The Faces of Friendship by : Isabel Anders
Download or read book The Faces of Friendship written by Isabel Anders and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-03-01 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Faces of Friendship is one woman's mapping of the interlocking dynamics of friendship that penetrate to the deepest roots within us--our innate sense of belonging both to God and to each other. Isabel Anders, author of personal reflections that "reverberate with spiritual insight" (Arthur Livingston in New Oxford Review)--Awaiting the Child, Soul Moments, and Seasons for the Soul--has collected here in one volume her insights on the various faces of friendship that we encounter daily, with hints of paths we may follow for our souls' instruction and delight. But this is no simple prescription for everyone or every situation. Anders's strong theological grounding in the underlying meaning of friendship teems with biblical and classical understandings that stretch the reader and invite ongoing interaction--with questions, quotes, and further insights for individuals and groups at the end of each chapter.
