Book Synopsis Reforming the Art of Dying by : Austra Reinis
Download or read book Reforming the Art of Dying written by Austra Reinis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reformation led those who embraced Martin Luther's teachings to revise virtually every aspect of their faith and to reorder their daily lives in view of their new beliefs. Nowhere was this more true than with death. By the beginning of the sixteenth century the Medieval Church had established a sophisticated mechanism for dealing with death and its consequences. The Protestant reformers rejected this new mechanism. To fill the resulting gap and to offer comfort to the dying, they produced new liturgies, new church orders, and new handbooks on dying. This study focuses on the earliest of the Protestant handbooks, beginning with Luther's Sermon on Preparing to Die in 1519 and ending with Jakob Otter's Christlich leben vnd sterben in 1528. It explores how Luther and his colleagues adopted traditional themes and motifs even as they transformed them to accord with their conviction that Christians could be certain of their salvation. It further shows how Luther's colleagues drew not only on his teaching on dying, but also on other writings including his sermons on the sacraments. The study concludes that the assurance of salvation offered in the Protestant handbooks represented a significant departure from traditional teaching on death. By examining the ways in which the themes and teachings of the reformers differed from the late medieval ars moriendi, the book highlights both breaks with tradition and continuities that marked the early Reformation.

Book Synopsis The Principle of Contradiction by : Edward Conze
Download or read book The Principle of Contradiction written by Edward Conze and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conze’s monograph The Principle of Contradiction: On the Theory of Dialectical Materialism is his most important philosophical work and the foundation for his later publications as a Buddhist scholar and translator. The openly Marxist work was published under considerable risk to both printer and author alike in December 1932 in Hamburg, Germany. Only months later, in May 1933, almost all of the five hundred copies of the first edition were destroyed during the Nazi book burning campaign. It is only now, more than eighty years later, that Conze’s key philosophical work is made available to a broad audience in this English translation. In the work, Conze sets out to develop a detailed account of the historical and material conditions that support the emergence, production, and transmission of theoretical knowledge—as exemplified by the principle of contradiction—and, furthermore, to show that under different social and historical conditions the allegedly necessary truth and indubitable content of the principle would dissolve and be replaced by a radically different understanding of the principle of contradiction—a dialectic understanding of the principle that would compel a rejection of the Aristotelian dogma. From a Marxist perspective, the analysis and critique of the principle of contradiction is a crucial and necessary step towards a dialectical understanding of philosophical (and political) theory and practice. Conze’s monograph, which attempts to clear the ground for a deeper understanding of the very foundation of classical Marxist thought, may very well be the most comprehensive Marxist critique of the Aristotelian principle of contradiction available to this day. However, Conze’s pioneering 1932 monograph goes well beyond the constraints of an orthodox Marxist analysis. His erudite and scholarly account of the history and evolution of the principle of contradiction illuminates the thought of Aristotle, Marx, and Buddha, and provides the groundwork for a new cross-cultural and interdisciplinary approach to philosophical theory and practice.

Book Synopsis Nicolaus Damascenus. De Plantis. Five Translations by : H.J. Drossaart Lulofs
Download or read book Nicolaus Damascenus. De Plantis. Five Translations written by H.J. Drossaart Lulofs and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-01-21 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For three centuries the treatise De plantis has been poorly represented by a Byzantine Greek translation of a mediocre Latin version made from the Arabic, which in its turn came from a Syriac rendering of the lost original. Since this Byzantine version was four times removed from the Greek exemplar, its authority was, to say the least, questionable. However, it was printed in 1539, and in spite of ubiquitous disapproval found its way into all subsequent editions of the Corpus Aristotelicum. In the present book the fragments of the Syriac version and the text of the four other translations (Arabic, Latin, Greek, Hebrew) are edited afresh. As far as possible, the manuscriptal evidence is complete, and each text is provided with an introduction and copious notes concerning philological problems. A few of the numerous commentaries are added and the vexed question of whether Averroes had written a commentary on De plantis is treated at some length.
Book Synopsis The Influence of Averroes on European Thought by : Koert Debeuf
Download or read book The Influence of Averroes on European Thought written by Koert Debeuf and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-11-14 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By exploring the influence of the Andalusian philosopher, Averroes or Ibn Rushd (1126-1198 AD) on European philosophy from the 13th to the 18th century, Koert Debeuf sheds light on a neglected side of the history of philosophy: the influence of Arabic thought on European philosophy. In this book Debeuf reveals the true extent of Averroes's role, showing it as much larger than we read about in popular histories of philosophy. His ideas have been followed, fought and discussed in Europe for centuries, deeply influencing generations of thinkers. Why has Averroes' role been forgotten? By focusing on histories of philosophy written from the 17th to the 21st century, Debeuf provides a chronological overview that shows that Arabic philosophy was not just forgotten, but purposefully written out of the history of philosophy. Until the early Enlightenment most European thinkers were convinced that the history of philosophy was universalistic. That changed in the 18th century with the rise and dominance of Christian and European idea. Although the battle against Arabic philosophy started more than 700 years ago we see how it is still alive today. This much-needed study encourages us to challenge and reassess our existing ideas about the history of philosophy and Eurocentric interpretations of one of philosophy's major figures.

Book excerpt: The first comprehensive study on the influence of Latin classical texts and traditions in medieval Hungary based on philological and historical analysis of eleventh century sources. The author proves that the Latin classics had a stronger impact on the formation of Latin literacy in medieval Hungary than it has been acknowledges before. The four chapters of the book (The Cathedral School, The Admonitions of King Saint Stephen of Hungary, The Deliberato of Bishop Saint Gerard of Csanad, The Monastic School) provide important contributions to the philological study of Medieval Latin and the classical tradition in medieval Central Europe.

Book Synopsis Proceedings of the Boston Colloquium for the Philosophy of Science 1964/1966 by : Robert S. Cohen
Download or read book Proceedings of the Boston Colloquium for the Philosophy of Science 1964/1966 written by Robert S. Cohen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third volume of Boston Studies in the Philosophy of Science contains papers which are based upon Colloquia from 1964 to 1966. In most cases, they have been substantially modified subsequent to presentation and discussion. Once again we publish work which goes beyond technical analysis of scientific theories and explanations in order to include philo sophical reflections upon the history of science and also upon the still problematic interactions between metaphysics and science. The philo sophical history of scientific ideas has increasingly been recognized as part of the philosophy of science, and likewise the cultural context of the genesis of such ideas. There is no school or attitude to be taken as de fining the scope or criteria of our Colloquium, and so we seek to under stand both analytic and historical aspects of science. This volume, as the previous two, constitutes a substantial part of our final report to the U. S. National Science Foundation, which has continued its support of the Boston Colloquium for the Philosophy of Science by a grant to Boston University. That report will be concluded by a subse quent volume of these Studies. It is a pleasure to record our thanks to the Foundation for its confidence and funds. We dedicate this book to the memory of Norwood Russell Hanson. During this academic year of 1966-67, this beloved and distinguished American philosopher participated in our Colloquium, and he did so before.

Book excerpt: This volume collects essays which are thematically connected through the work of Kent Emery Jr., to whom the volume is dedicated. A main focus lies on the attempts to bridge the gap between mysticism and a systematic approach to medieval philosophical thought. The essays address a wide range of topics concerning (a) the nature of the human soul (in philosophical and theological discourse); (b) medieval theories of cognition (natural and supernatural), self-knowledge and knowledge of God; (c) the human soul’s contemplation of, and union with, God; (d) the tradition of “the modes of theology” in the Middle Ages; (e) the relation between philosophy and theology. Various articles are dedicated to major figures of the 13th and 14th century philosophy, others display new material based on critical editions. Contributors are Jan A.
