This book was released on 1995 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents the findings of a fish survey of the Pahang river basin, the largest basin in Peninsular Malaysia. During the survey, 165 species representing 37 families were found. Some 130 species were discovered at the lower zone as compared to about 90 species at the middle zone. Generally diversity of fish in the upper reaches is comparatively less than the lower ones. Members of the family Cyprinidae were the most dominant and widely distributed, contributing more than 40% of the ichthyofaunal composition. In terms of the number of families, catfishes were the most diverse group, comprising a total of 8 families. Habitat destruction and alterations of the riverine form are two threats for the perpetual existence of the fish in the Penang river basin. The use of illegal methods to catch fish, such as poisons and explosive can become a major threat in the future in depleting fishery resource of the basin. [Author's abstract].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the vast area of structurally similar vegetation that forms the Far Eastern tropical rain forest block, only the forests of peninsular Malaysia lie on the mainland of Asia. Although showing some influence from this source, the flora and fauna are distinctive and exceedingly rich in species. Among other factors, this richness reflects the complex structure of the vegetation, justly famous for the extensive stands of tall trees that create the conditions to which many smaller plants, fungi and a huge variety of animals are adapted. After a century of scientific investigation, it is now possible to understand peninsular Malaysia's complex ecosystem as an essential prerequisite to the successful management for conservation and long-term productivity in the area. Compiled by authors with personal experience of the region, this book constitutes the most authoritative account of this diverse and fragile region. It is essential reading for all those interested in Malaysia and its conservation.
Book Synopsis Anthropogenic Tropical Forests by : Noboru Ishikawa
Download or read book Anthropogenic Tropical Forests written by Noboru Ishikawa and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-06 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The studies in this volume provide an ethnography of a plantation frontier in central Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. Drawing on the expertise of both natural scientists and social scientists, the key focus is the process of commodification of nature that has turned the local landscape into anthropogenic tropical forests. Analysing the transformation of the space of mixed landscapes and multiethnic communities—driven by trade in forest products, logging and the cultivation of oil palm—the contributors explore the changing nature of the environment, multispecies interactions, and the metabolism between capitalism and nature. The project involved the collaboration of researchers specialising in anthropology, geography, Southeast Asian history, global history, area studies, political ecology, environmental economics, plant ecology, animal ecology, forest ecology, hydrology, ichthyology, geomorphology and life-cycle assessment. Collectively, the transdisciplinary research addresses a number of vital questions. How are material cycles and food webs altered as a result of large-scale land-use change? How have new commodity chains emerged while older ones have disappeared? What changes are associated with such shifts? What are the relationships among these three elements—commodity chains, material cycles and food webs? Attempts to answer these questions led the team to go beyond the dichotomy of society and nature as well as human and non-human. Rather, the research highlights complex relational entanglements of the two worlds, abruptly and forcibly connected by human-induced changes in an emergent and compelling resource frontier in maritime Southeast Asia.
