Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2008, Donna Freitas's Sex and the Soul achieved national acclaim, illuminating the as-yet-unexplored struggles of college students navigating the lines of faith and sexuality. Conducting face-to-face interviews at a wide range of colleges and universities-from public to private, Catholic to evangelical-Freitas discovers what students really think about these highly personal subjects. Their stories will not only engage readers, but, in many cases, move them with the painful struggles these candid young women and men face. This updated edition includes a new Afterword in which Freitas reflects on the hundreds of conversations she has had with college students since the book was first published, and offers further practical advice for dealing with hookup culture.

Book Synopsis South Asian American Stories of Self by : Tasneem Mandviwala
Download or read book South Asian American Stories of Self written by Tasneem Mandviwala and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-04 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book acknowledges and discusses the now politically infamous aspects of an American Muslim woman’s life such as Islamophobia and hijab, but it more importantly examines how women actually deal with these obstacles, intentionally shifting the lens to capture a more holistic, nuanced understanding of their human experiences. This text is based on a three-year-long qualitative interdisciplinary cultural and developmental psychology and gender systems study. It uniquely organizes risks, protective factors, and coping mechanisms according to developmental life stages, from teenage to adulthood. Results show how second-generation Muslim American women’s identities develop during adolescence (11-18), emerging adulthood (19-29), and adulthood (30-39) within multiple socio-cultural contexts. Discussions regarding Muslim Americans often erroneously equate “Muslim” with “Arab” or “Middle Eastern.” By focusing on South Asian Muslim Americans, this work bluntly discusses the overlaps of South Asian culture with Islam, an important contribution to the field since the majority of immigrant Muslims in America are of South Asian descent. This study adds nuance and detail to American Muslim girls’ and women’s experiences while fighting misinformation and stereotypes. It is a significant contribution to anthropological developmental psychology and cultural psychology. The focus on a historically academically marginalized population is beneficial to students, researchers, and professionals in the field.

Book Synopsis Narrating the Storm by : Kristen Barber
Download or read book Narrating the Storm written by Kristen Barber and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For those interested in learning more about the personal impact of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath, Narrating the Storm serves as an essential read. This important and timeless volume is a compilation of sixteen narratives that address the experiences of Gulf Coast residents, faculty, and graduate students who were caught up in the largest (not so) natural disaster in United States history. Each contributor deploys storytelling sociology as a methodological approach in order to illustrate how “personal” experiences with disaster are not so personal, but rather reflect and are informed by larger social phenomena related to issues including race, class, gender, age, bureaucracy, risk, collective memory, the blasé, and more. The narratives in this volume exemplify how inequality and injustice are unveiled, exacerbated, and created by the occurrence of disaster; and reveal the sociological in everyday and not-so-everyday experiences.

Book excerpt: Cori Donovan is dead. When she was alive, she was a bundle of opposites. She was a freshman college honors student. She wrote poetry and plays. And she sold ecstasy on the side. She slept around. Molly Colligan moves into Cori's old room, starting the spring semester at a new school, hoping to escape from the dark secrets of her past. But it seems that darkness follows her. Cori may be gone, but her absence seems to saturate everything in Molly's new life. Before long, Molly finds herself using the same drugs that Cori used, hanging out with same people Cori hung out with, kissing the same boys that Cori kissed, and ultimately in trouble with the same dangerous people that Cori knew. Levi Reed, Cori's drug dealing partner, wanted to use Cori's connections to get close to the mysterious Professor X, the biggest ecstasy cook this side of the Atlantic. Now that Cori's gone, he figures Molly's the next best thing. Using her gets tougher when he realizes he just might care about her. But he has his own past and his own secrets, and he can't get involved with a girl like Molly. However, they're both twisted up in Cori's past now, and to get free, they must untangle her secrets-without getting caught on the snags of their own.
