It builds upon previous qualitative research that focuses on successful African-American males in four-year colleges and universities by shifting the gaze from those who have completed a journey through higher education to those who are beginning their journey in higher education The purpose of this study is to develop an understanding of the freshman experiences of male African-American community college students. Findings from their freshman experiences will provide insight into the retention and transition experiences of African-American males in community colleges. This qualitative study is grounded in a postmodern epistemology. Phenomenological hermeneutic analysis is used to determine the meanings within the experiences of the African-American male community college students. The researcher interviewed six African-American males on two rural community college campuses to gather information about their first year experiences. Implications to established retention theories, including those of Tinto (1975) and Bean and Metzner (1985), are explored. Implications for higher education research on race related to stereotype threat and stigma consciousness are also explored. Finally, practical implications for community colleges are presented.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this case study was to investigate the experiences of first-year African American males who participated in a Living Learning Community (LLC) while attending a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), to understand how, if at all, the program had any impact on the participants' retention. The conceptual framework for this study was derived from the student integration model (Tinto, 1993). Research was conducted on the campus of a mid-sized HBCU located in the southeastern region of the United States. Over a period of four weeks, data were collected from students participating in the LLC. Data collection methods included 12 in-depth interviews, 12 residence hall observations, 4 classroom observations, and information from reports obtained from the institution. Themes and subject categories from the interviews and observations were determined using a combination of In Vivo (Creswell, 2013; Saldana, 2013) and open coding (Corbin & Strauss, 2007). Findings from the case study showed students in the LLC perceived they experienced and/or received several academic benefits associated with their participation, such as knowledge and use of academic support services including academic advising, tutorial services, and supplemental instruction. The students also perceived they experienced more social connectivity with their fellow LLC members and participated in more social events compared to those not in the LLC. Additionally, the participants commented the program made it easier for them to make friends, which facilitated a smoother transition to college. Students also directly associated their LLC participation with increasing their likelihood of being retained. Based on these findings, a foundation for understanding how LLCs on HBCU campuses can positively impact first-year African American males will be established. The conclusions drawn from the study will advise higher education practitioners on methods to enhance outcomes for African American male students on HBCU campuses using LLC programming."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book excerpt: Although African-American males are enrolling in community colleges, their graduation rates are alarmingly low and there is a dearth of research about why this is the case. "Despite the high number of African American students enrolled in two-year institutions," argued Bush and Bush (2010), "there is a pronounced scarcity of educational literature and research about the community college system in general and African American students specifically" (p. 40). Harris and Wood (2013) also gave credence to the fact that it was not until after 2010 that scholars began researching men of color at community colleges. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to document and better understand the college-going experience of degree-seeking, first-generation, African-American males at an urban community college in the Midwest so that future African-American male students can be better supported in their quest for a higher education. Harper (2014) asked researchers to stop mischaracterizing young men of color and offer more than a one-sided narrative. This study aims to achieve that and also includes topics overlooked in the research: distinctive interventions for community colleges, personal reasons students drop out, the challenge of balancing academic and social pressures, and the need for qualitative research regarding the experiences of African-American males. In this study, major findings from 15 semi-structured interviews, demographic questionnaires, and support network diagrams are examined through an anti-deficit framing lens. Several themes emerged from the analysis process. Four of the major themes describe what contributes to associate degree completion for African-American males: importance of family and mentors, significance of believing in success, impact of community support, and influence of faculty connections. Four of the major themes are categorized as challenges to degree completion for African-American males. These are: complexities of being a first generation student, questioning the value of higher education, difficulties of college, and facing the reality of racism. Themes that emerged from this research indicate the ways faculty, student services professionals, and fellow students can best support African-American male students. This study also suggests that if community colleges truly want to see an increase in the number of African-American males graduating, there will need to be a college-wide strategy and implementation behind any social mobility objectives--not just words but action is needed. One participant offered a charge to readers that should persist beyond this dissertation regarding how instructors, staff, and students can best support African-American males at a community college: Just educate [yourself] about our experiences. Like you're doing. Talk to us, learn, see what they went through, see the challenges they went through to get where they are now, and what possible challenges they might face in the future.

Most research addressing the success of African American males in higher education illuminates factors that impede access to success and is often situated in university settings. Very little research is dedicated to examining the experiences of African American males in community colleges and even less research is published on their perceptions of success Purpose: To examine and understand the concept of success from the perspective of African American males enrolled in community college and identify how institutional and non-institutional factors affect their concept of success. Setting: Interviews were conducted at community colleges in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Subjects: Seven African American males enrolled in at least 6 credits at a community college in were interviewed. Research Design: Qualitative interviews using a semi-structured question matrix; the question matrix was designed to elicit responses related to defining a personal concept of success. Data Collection and Analysis: Face- to- face interviews were conducted on college campuses. Audio recordings were collected, transcribed, and then coded using computer- assisted qualitative data analysis software. Coded excerpts were grouped into prominent themes. Findings: Six primary themes were identified from the interview data. • Almost all participants stated that academic success had nothing to do with academic performance. Academic success was situated in overcoming challenges in an academic environment. • Success in general is more important than academic success. • The concept of success changes based on life experiences. • Feeling isolated, positive and negative interactions with faculty and peers contributed to the concept of success. • Negative imagery, stereotypes, financial status, and family support contribute to how African American males perceive themselves as successful. • Overcoming daily challenges based on race is indicative to how African American males equate success. Conclusions: While persistence and completion are important, academic success as defined by African American males in community college does not pertain to academic performance. Deeply rooted issues of race and racism influence a general definition of success. Concepts of success change overtime as significant life events occur and as more encounters with racism are realized. Overcoming challenges that affect the intersections of race, class and gender are more accurate descriptions of success. African American males in community college are very aware of how fragile their lives are as targets of racial profiling. Avoiding situations where others may not feel safe in their presence and continuously compensating for racial barriers that must be overcome in order to succeed is burden that is carried daily. For African American males, the only concept of success that matters is surviving the daily challenges of being an African American male for example, not losing their life at the hands of police officers.

Each young man interviewed is or was an active participant in an on campus support program specifically for African American males. The participants' experiences as African American male students enrolled in a California community college, lead to a greater understanding of African American males in the California Community College system, as a demographic. Findings suggest the importance of appreciating the stories and lived experiences of the subjects prior to joining the on campus group for later success at the Community College level. Findings suggest that this all-male, student support group created a means of increasing student persistence, retention and transfer rates. Moreover, findings show how African American male students' academic engagement, self-perception and interpersonal relations are positively impacted by their participation in the group. Thus, the practices of this all-male support group should be replicated across the California Community Colleges. The all-male support group is demonstrative of an effective means that the California Community Colleges could employ to increase the persistence, retention, completion and transfer rates of their male students, in general and for African American students specifically. Further, the findings suggest the utility of the all-male support group on campus as positively affecting the educational and personal circumstance outcomes of African American male students. Future research could be employed to better uncover the positive components that undergird the effectiveness of the all-male support group on campus for African American male students. In summary, the participants appear to have greater perceived engagement with the Community College experience through the all male support group.

Book excerpt: African American men complete post-secondary education among the lowest rates of any other subgroup in higher education (Brooms & Davis, 2017; Farmer & Hope, 2015; Palmer, Wood, Dancy, & Strayhorn, 2014; Warde, 2008). This study focuses on addressing this problem by attempting to understand the experiences of African American men who successfully navigate a higher education pipeline from community college to a four-year, predominantly White institution (PWI). Half of all African American men enter higher education at the community college level (Villavicencio, Bhattacharya, & Guidry, 2013); therefore, community college plays a key role in shaping their experiences in higher education moving forward. Also, educational data has shown that an African American man, who is also a transfer student, has a small chance of transferring to a four-year PWI and completing a degree. To address this issue, this study is designed to understand how African American men in PWIs of higher education, after successfully transferring from community college, describe and make meaning of their experiences. The design for this qualitative study is phenomenology and is applied to discover the deep interconnectedness shared by this study's participants. Additionally, Critical Race Theory's five educational tenets by Yosso, Smith, Ceja, and Solórzano (2009) were used to understand the contributions that race had on the experiences of participants. I engaged semi-structured interviews with 10 African American men at midwestern PWIs who successfully transferred from a community college. Initial analysis of the data yielded four emergent themes. These themes highlight the participants' experiences with the invisibility of race while at their PWI, how participants' community college experiences shaped their experiences at the PWI, how participants remained determined to achieve their goals through higher education while facing adversity, and how participants ultimately did not express any regrets about attending a PWI. The findings from this research suggest how important it is for practitioners and researchers, whose primary focus is African American men, to continue to design initiatives and research highlighting their stories of success. This positive realignment in practice and research is essential to combating the deficit perspective that dominates the conversation regarding African American men in higher education.

Six African American male students attending a community college in Virginia were interviewed. A semi-structured interview protocol approach was used to establish dialogue between the participants and the researcher. The interview questions were designed based on the literature review. The results illustrate how African American male students are able to overcome obstacles to ascertain academic success regardless of their race and postsecondary challenges.

The participants were 6 high-achieving African American and Black males attending a large urban community college located in in the Texas Gulf Coast region. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The analysis of the data yielded ten major themes (1) College Preparation, (2) High School Peer Influence, (3) Extracurricular Activity Participation, (4) Self-Motivation, (5) Family Interactions, (6) Adjustment to College, (7) Engagement, (8) Participation in Student Organizations, (9) Leadership Development Programs, and (10) Academic Support Services. I interviewed African American men who shared their narratives on how they lived out their manhood on a mid-western public regional four-year university campus. The combination of phenomenological and grounded theory research paradigms helped me to analyze the lived experiences of African American men in an institution of higher education milieu. The main themes that I identified after analyzing the collected data, using critical race theory as a key theoretical lens, were Black Masculinity, Being Seen, Brotherhood, Support Groups, and Ideations of Success. African American men's complex and multi-dimensional masculinities called for a sense of commitment and responsibility to community, family, and brotherhood. The respondents' goals of graduating are similar to all other student groups, and they are most likely to thrive in their first year of college if their Black masculinities are centered; they most likely will seek assistance when made to feel valued and seen by institutional and familial support systems.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this narrative inquiry was to explore the stories of six African American men who graduated from a community college in the Mid-Atlantic region in 2020 during the COVID-19 global pandemic. These stories are important, as they contrast with numerous deficit-framed studies that showcase completion data on how African American males academically lag in juxtaposition to their collegiate peers; these stories of success are even more important now, as the enrollment of Black males in community colleges has declined during the global pandemic and community college leaders have been focused on increasing recruitment and completion rates among all students, including African American males. By applying Bush and Bush's (2013) African American Male Theory, this research sought to elevate the voices of Black men, particularly regarding the stories they shared that gave credence to the supports and interventions they used to complete their degrees. The three research questions that guided this study were: 1) What stories do Black males share about their academic experiences throughout community college during COVID-19? 2) What stories do African American males share about their personal lives, beyond academics, throughout their community college experiences during COVID-19? 3) What stories do African American males share about people or support programs that assisted them in successfully graduating community college during COVID-19? Data were collected using one-on-one, semi-structured interviews and restorying. The responses of six African American males who graduated from a Mid-Atlantic community college in 2020, particularly during the COVID-19 crisis, shaped the findings of this study, along with also helping to shape the summary and implications for future studies. The data analysis, using narrative thematic analysis, indicated that the participants found ways to create familial and cultural connections between and across academic and non-academic contexts, which ensured their ultimate successes, even with multiple barriers and often elusive supports. It was significant to note the lack of employment security for some of the participants, as well the direct impact that COVID-19 had on the instructional reception of the participants in this study.
